Dear God Tracker

God-Tracking Is Walking In Faith That His Plans Will Prevail

Through the prophet Jeremiah the Lord has said, “I know the plans I have for you.” He goes on to say that these plans are to give us a hope and a future. The Lord God knows our tomorrow. He has foreknowledge of all we will go through in order to realise his plans. However, the Bible also tells us that we have an enemy who is intent on our destruction. The devil’s plans are to disrupt the plans of God for our lives.

After we were married Karen and I moved from Johannesburg to Pretoria in South Africa where we lived. After we had settled in we looked around for a church to join. For three months we attended a very large church but somehow knew that God didn’t want us there. One day as I was driving through town I came across a small whitewashed church set back from the road. I was intrigued so I stopped the car and made my way to the notice board. As I approached the door a man came out and greeted me. We struck up a conversation and I discovered that he was the pastor. He had just popped into the church at the exact moment that I arrived. We chatted a while and then I left. As it turned out my best friend had also recently moved to Pretoria with his wife and was looking for a church so we both decided that we’d give this church a try that coming Sunday.

Unbeknownst to me the whole worship team had grievously walked out the week before we arrived, leaving the pastor in a quandary. God had a purpose for that man and that church but somehow the devil had second-guessed God’s plans and caused disorder. Oddly enough (funny how God works) my friend and I were both guitarists with some year’s experience in worship leading. And so it turned out that at the exact time that the devil had disrupted God’s plans for our new pastor’s life, God’s plans for my friend and me were to coincide our paths with his, so frustrating the devil’s attempt to derail God’s purposes.

The devil will do whatever he can to disturb God’s plans for you. Satan’s plans are wrought through sin, illness, loss, disorder, confusion and through physical attack. Satan is not unintelligent. He too has strategy and purpose and, although he does not know God’s plans for your life, he can make a very good guess at God’s purposes for you. He will do his level best to derail you from your God-track. But take courage, Jesus has overcome the devil! So if you feel as though your plans for the future are falling apart then simply continue to acknowledge the Lord in all you do and keep your eyes of Jesus. Then trust that your Lord will direct your path, always!

God-Tracking is walking in faith that his plans will prevail.

Pray
Dear Lord, thank you so much that you have plans for my life and that your plans are for my good. I confess that I acknowledge you in all my ways: in my relationships, in my work, in my church life, my hobbies and everything I set my hand to do. I know that you know my tomorrow so I put my trust in your will and purpose for me. I also believe that Jesus has conquered the devil and made a spectacle of him at Calvary. Therefore, I will continue to keep my eyes fixed on Christ and stand strong in the knowledge that you are in control of my life. I repent of my sins, resist the devil and put my faith in God. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Dear God Tracker

God-Tracking Is Walking With the God of 70 Times 7

Someone once said that God is the God of second chances. I don’t think I fully agree with this statement. I think God is not the God of only the second chance but the God of 70 times 7 chances.

Jesus had just completed an amazing discourse on the power of agreement when Peter quietly approached him and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?”  Peter thought, as only Peter could think, that he’d impress Jesus by suggesting that he was willing to forgive a grievance seven times, since he knew that the number seven represented completion in Hebrew thinking. Peter assumed, as only Peter could assume, that there was a limit to forgiveness. However, good old Pete was knocked sideways by his Lord’s reply: “No Peter, not just seven times but seventy times seven!” Jesus once again had used exaggeration as a figure of speech to point out that there is no limit to forgiveness.

I thank God that he is willing to forgive me perfectly every time I sin or make a godless decision. Of course, I am by no means qualified to deliberately sin in the expectation of God’s forgiveness but I do know that even as a born again Christian I’m less than perfect (sometimes we “born-againers” tend to think that we are perfect). The truth is, although I have confessed and repented of sins that I have actually committed, I sadly find myself doing the same thing time after time.

Have you ever found yourself in this sin-confess cycle? Well you’re not alone. Even the apostle Paul battled with this dilemma, however he also knew that grace gave him no license to sin. And yet God views the heart and true repentance comes from the heart. If you’ve made a mistake or two or if you’ve made a bad decision then, with a true heart, bring it to Jesus and lay your failures at the foot of the cross. Our God is faithful and just – because of the cross of Jesus – to forgive and restore you, “seventy times seven”.

God-Tracking is walking with the God of 70 times 7

Dear God Tracker

God-Tracking Is Being Willing to Grab the Baton and Run

“But I haven’t led worship in over two years,” I said to Karen. “I’m not sure if it’s God’s will for me to pick up my old guitar again and offer to lead praise and worship in this church, however great the need.” She had just mentioned to me that the previous worship leader of the new local church we’d recently committed ourselves to, had been moved away leaving the pastor and his wife desperate for the future of the church. Karen knew that I was only scouting for excuses to doubt God’s call to serve him in. In her usual nonchalant manner my lovely wife then said something like, “You’ll never know unless you give it a try.”

I picked up the phone and rang my new pastor. With hat in hand I rambled on about how many years experience in worship leading I had and that I’d been praying about offering my services to the church and now that I heard the previous team had resigned… Jim cut me off in midsentence. “You know what, Dudley?” he said, “You just interrupted Jane and me as we were praying. We were just asking God to provide a musician this week and that if he didn’t then we’d take it as his direction for us to leave the ministry.” I was dumfounded and not a little humbled. Only our God could provide a need like that in the way he did and use me to do it.

Dear God-tracker, you and I are in a race – a relay race. Each of us is standing ready to humbly take up the baton from the other in the call to grow the Kingdom of God. None of us is as important as all of us so never take lightly the call of God on your life. If he has raised you up and provided you with the gifting to do whatever he has called you to do then rest assured, he will use you. And as you continue to acknowledge him then be willing to humbly make that phone call or write that e-mail. God has ways of not only confirming his calling on your life but also of meeting the needs of others in the process. Meekly take up that challenge in faith and run. He who promised is faithful and he will do it!

16 November 2012

Dear God Tracker

God-Tracking Is Taking God Intended Detours

Karen and I recently visited the lovely Mediterranean island of Malta. From our hotel in Qawra we looked across St Paul’s Bay, the traditional shipwreck site of Paul the Apostle. I remember standing on Qawra Point looking out at the choppy Med thinking about that great story. Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem and had appealed to Caesar. On his way to Rome they were caught in a terrible storm and ultimately shipwrecked off the coast of Malta. By God’s grace and purpose, none of the 276 people on board was lost.

As I gazed out at the blue waters of the sea it occurred to me that the great Apostle had no intention of visiting Malta. In fact he’d probably not even heard of it. But God had a purpose in this detour. Twice Satan attempted to take Paul’s life, first by a shipwreck and then by snakebite. As the local people of that community watched Paul survive both attacks they were impacted by the power of God through Christ and brought their sick to be healed. Paul and his companions were unintentionally used beyond their own expectations to minister to these people, and the result… great revival – an incidental revival – which broke out on Malta the legacy of which is still found on that island today.

Tracking the God-track can seem a bit rocky at times, to say the least. The enemy of your soul will do everything he can to prevent God’s purposes from working out in your life. Sometimes you will find yourself on an unplanned path wondering how in the world you got there. As with Paul on Malta, you may find that God is working in and through you in ways you would never have imagined possible with no intent on your behalf. So if you’re facing shipwreck today, don’t be surprised if God turns it into the greatest voyage of your life. Keep acknowledging the Lord in all your ways and you may be destined for incidental revival!

God-tracking is taking God intended detours.
