Gossip is dangerous, and gossip is a sin. Gossip can split families, split churches, destroy businesses and undermine God’s purposes. Jesus called the devil the father of lies… gossip is at the very least, embroidered truth.”

Proverbs 18:21Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

http://surereality.netDuring his last year in office, British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was attending an official ceremony. Several rows behind him two gentlemen began whispering. “That's Winston Churchill,” said one man. “They say he is getting senile,” replied the other. “They say he should step aside and leave the running of the nation to more dynamic and capable men.” When the ceremony was over, Churchill turned to the men and quietly said, "Gentlemen, they also say he is deaf!"
French playwright, Pierre de Marivaux said, “Some people will believe anything if it is whispered to them.” In proverbs we read, “A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.” The tongue is a dangerous weapon. With it we praise God and with it we slander men. A surreptitious whisper can often have far reaching ramifications, particularly because the Lord hears every word that we speak.

I was once the victim of a clandestine conspiracy. In a small church, where I was the worship leader, the pastor developed a notion that I planned to split the church and lure half its members away with me. This was a ludicrous thought. I had absolutely no intension of doing so. At the time, I was in fulltime training for the ministry and needed both the pastor and the church’s support. Nevertheless, the pastor had this idea, and soon he began talking to others about it. Eventually, he’d rallied enough covert support to confront me. I denied his accusations but, because he had already spread the rumour, I was compelled to resign, for fear of actually splitting the church. Sadly, that was not the end of the story, because, when I stepped down, the majority of the church began to ask questions. I tried to remain objective but soon a vote of confidence was called in the pastor’s leadership. He lost the vote and the church eventually shut down.

Gossip is dangerous, and gossip is a sin. Gossip can split families, split churches, destroy businesses and undermine God’s purposes. Jesus called the devil the father of lies. As was obvious by Churchill’s reply to the two men who whispered about him, gossip is at the very least, embroidered truth. Scripture warns us, “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” So, let’s pray, “Lord, keep watch over the door of my lips.”

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

Lord, help us to guard against gossip in the Church; help us to guard the gate of our lips

“Father God, I’m sorry for ever spreading rumours. I realise that gossip is dangerous and vain. Forgive me for the times I have gossiped. Jesus, you are the Truth. Help me to always walk in the truth, believe the truth and speak the truth. I pray for anyone I may have hurt through a flippant word or futile gossip. I pray for their restoration and healing. Lord, help us to guard against gossip in the Church; help us to guard the gate of our lips. Amen.”
