“Therefore,
make sure your conversation is seasoned with the conscious presence of the Holy
Spirit every time you find yourself in a position of conflict or are called
upon to share your faith in this world.”
Colossians 4:6
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with
salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
I remember my first attempt at cooking a curry. Before I go any further, one thing you need to understand is that I’m no cook! Yet, with the council and direction of my talented wife, I once boldly attempted to cook up a dish fit for the Raj of India. The ingredients: sunflower oil, beef braising steak, onions, chopped tomatoes, garlic cloves, chillies, fresh root ginger, cumin, turmeric, garam masala, natural yoghurt and a handful of freshly chopped coriander. I dare say, it turned out quite okay.
I fully understand that not everyone who reads this may be a lover of Indian cuisine. However, I’m sure you’ll agree that most of the ingredients listed above would make for a very fragrant and seasoned dish. Garlic, chillies, cumin, coriander and the other herbs and spices all have strong flavours and can certainly influence the dish to produce its distinctive curry flavour. However, if I were to remove these distinct ingredients, I’d be left with sunflower oil, beef braising steak, onions and chopped tomatoes. If I cooked only these components, my splendid curry would end up nothing more than an average stew.
As we track the highways and byways of the Christian
life, we often find ourselves in situations that test the flavour of our faith.
The scripture tells us to make the most of every opportunity by allowing our
interaction with the world to be seasoned as with salt. We are the salt of the
earth, which means that we essence the world around us with the flavour of
Christ. In our own strength, we would find it impossible to reveal God’s grace
and power to the world, but when we allow our witness to be seasoned with the
power of God’s Spirit, we become salt and light in a decaying and dark world.
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would give us the words we need to speak
when we’re put on the spot. Therefore, make sure your conversation is seasoned
with the conscious presence of the Holy Spirit every time you find yourself in
a position of conflict or are called upon to share your faith in this world.
Only his power and grace will turn your humdrum stew into a fragrant curry.
God-tracking is a life seasoned by the presence of
his Holy Spirit.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY
I surrender my conversations and interactions to
you and seek your words when I’m called upon to share my faith.
“Heavenly Father, I realise that it is only the fellowship and presence of your Holy Spirit in my life that will produce the seasoning I need to be your witness or be able to face conflict. You, O Holy Spirit, are the salt of my being. Help me to rest in your inspiration and instruction as I interact with those around me. Your power is the source of my strength. Your grace is the source of my ability. I surrender my conversations and interactions to you and seek your words when I’m called upon to share my faith. You, O Lord, are the essence that gives my life fragrance. Amen.”
