“Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.”

Psalm 116:2
Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live

In 1922 Helen Lemmel wrote a wonderful song, still sung extensively in churches today. In the chorus,
she wrote:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

The scriptures put it this way: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God,” and, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

I know of a woman who, together with her family, deeply loved and served the Lord. We’ll call her Sandra. Sadly, Sandra had a slow degenerative disease that was to take her life eventually. However, as a young woman, she married a loving man and had two wonderful children. Her children grew up to know and love Jesus. One day, her 21-year-old son, an avid motorcycle enthusiast, was coming home late one night and had a motor accident that took his life. The family was devastated, but Sandra held them together with the hope that only Jesus can offer. Shortly after her daughter married and left home, her husband had an extramarital affair and left Sandra to marry another woman. Sadly, after her granddaughter was born, Jan’s daughter died of meningitis. Sandra was left alone and dejected with a debilitating disease. As the years rolled by, she became increasingly ill until, in her mid-60s, Sandra passed away.

A tragic life story, indeed. Or was it? Up to her last breath, Sandra never denied her Lord. She remained true to worship and love God with all her heart, soul and body. She always had faith and cheer, and despite her dire circumstances, she continued to acknowledge the Lord every day, walking in his tender care. During her times of deepest darkest despair, Sandra would sing, “I turn my eyes upon Jesus, and the things of the earth grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.”

~It could be that you’re facing a Sandra scenario today. Perhaps you’ve been deserted or rejected. Maybe you’ve suffered loss, bereavement or illness; you’ve lost your security, and tomorrow looks a little less than rosy from where you’re standing today. If that’s you, then turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.

God-tracking is turning your eyes upon Jesus.

Don’t Give Up, Look Up & Pray

“Help me face tomorrow, Lord, in your glory and grace.”

“So here I am again, Lord, desperate for your help. I admit that I can’t face these difficulties in my own strength; I need your help. I choose to give up on my own efforts to get through my difficulties and put my confidence in your power to save, deliver and heal me. I fix my eyes on Jesus and look full in his wonderful face. I acknowledge you in all my needs and believe that you will meet them according to your riches in Jesus. Help me face tomorrow, Lord, in your glory and grace. Amen.”
