Dear God-tracker
God-tracking is wrestling with God in season and out
of season
Jacob paused and sat down on a rock. His hip was aching with every step
he took. What a night it had been. After leaving his family and animals on the
other side of the stream he had settled back down for the night. As he say
there he thought about how, as the last ambers were flickering in the fire,
suddenly he was awakened by a man standing at his side. He’d jumped up and
tried to wrestle the man to the ground, but the man was too strong. They had wrestled
all through the rest of the night until dawn smudged the eastern horizon with its
light.
“Let me go,” the man had said. “Not until you bless me, “replied Jacob.”
“What is your name,” asked the man?
“Jacob.”
“From now on you will be called, Israel, because you have struggled with
God!”
As Jacob sat pondering the night’s events on that rock he realised that
this man was more than just an intruder in his camp. He had wrestled with The
Angel of the Lord - with God himself - and was left with a sign to prove it.
His hip ached intensely.
Jacob had experienced a life of seasonal changes. When he succeeded in
swindling his twin brother, Esau out of his birth right and inheritance he’d
thought he was onto a good thing but soon found himself fleeing his brother to
a distant land. There he fell in love with the girl of his dreams. But instead
of a season of love, Jacob found himself slogging it out for 14 seasons of hard
labour in order to earn the hand of Rachel in marriage. During this time Jacob had
become very rich but soon was to receive word that Esau was tracking him down. He
stood to lose all his wealth and perhaps even his own life at the hand of his
brother. Throughout his life Jacob had faced seasons of plenty and seasons of
struggle and now he found himself alone, wrestling with God in one of those out-of-season
moments of life.
Jacob wrestled with God until he received the Lord’s blessing. God
intervened in his reunion with Esau and spared his life. Jacob then progressed
to become the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. However, he always walked with
that limp… a sign to remind him to be ready to wrestle with God through every
season of life.
Whatever season of life you find yourself in today only the Lord can be the
source of your hope and future. He does have a plan for you but you may need to
be ready to wrestle with God throughout every season of life. If you’re in a
season of plenty then praise God and be sure to keep your eyes on Jesus, lest
you fall into complacency. If you’re in a season of want then turn to the Lord
your source and resource and never let him go. Paul instructed his prodigy,
Timothy to be ready to preach God’s word in-season and out-of-season. Likewise,
whether you’re feeling on the top of the world or down in the dumps in your
Christian walk today, make sure you hold onto Jesus and wrestle with him
through every season of change until he richly blesses you.
God-tracking is wrestling with God in season and out of season.

…every limp I have is a
reminder of your hand upon my life
Pray:
“Dear Lord I feel as
though I have been wrestling all night with this problem. I don’t know what
tomorrow holds but I do know that you’re there already, in my tomorrow, meeting
my needs. I believe that you have a plan for my life, so today I want to put my
trust in your plan commit this problem to you. Help me to keep my eyes on you
and to wrestle with your word through all the in-seasons and the out-of-seasons
of my days. As I look back on those trying times I realise that every limp I
have is a reminder of your hand upon my life. You are my source and my
resource. I will hold onto your promises, always. Amen.”
