Dear God-tracker
God-tracking is turning the other cheek, even when it’s not your fault
Ed sat on his small bed in the small studio flat he’d moved to more than a year ago. His heart was heavy – very heavy. Joanne had kicked him out of the home after a massive blow-up. This conflict was years in the making. Finally she had snapped and sent him packing. He remembered the good times they’d had and how much he really did love her, but she never really understood him. He’d suffered so much verbal abuse and was determined to sit this one out until she saw the truth and came grovelling to his door. “That was one slap too, many,” he grumbled under his breath as he gazed out the only window into the blank wall outside. “I refuse to buckle to her whims any more… but how I miss her!”
Jesus lived in a culture thwart with self-righteous hypocrites. Most people, including his disciples, were intent on seeking their own ends in their relationship with him. James and John wanted to be the greatest in his kingdom whereas the Pharisees, who opposed him, were intent on promoting their own smug agendas. Any wonder that Jesus taught, “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant,” and “To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also,” and “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” These were alien words to a community who was hoping for a champion to rise up against their vicious Roman landlords. These were biting words to men consumed with their own self-importance and cozy lifestyles.
As the minutes past, Ed’s mind wondered back to the last sermon he’d heard Pastor Jim preach before he stopped attending church. “When someone insults you or accuses you of being in the wrong when you’re actually in the right,” Jim had said, “then turn the other cheek and take the slap. The truth will out, always!” In reality, Ed was on the side of the truth, well… mostly. Why should he buckle to her agenda? Then all of a sudden Ed realized that he had no need to defend himself. The truth will out! It always does. And God watches over the truth because Jesus is the Truth. Therefore all he needed to do was to continue to walk in the truth. “Turn the other cheek, eh?” he mused. “I know this is gonna hurt – like the other cheek did – but hey, what have I got to lose?” Ed dialed her number. “Hi Jo, I’m sorry…”

I choose to walk in the opposite spirit in humility, truth and forgiveness
Pray:“Dear Lord I realise that I have been a fool trying to defend my cause. If I am indeed, walking in the truth then you will vindicate me. However, if I’m not walking in the truth then I’m to blame for the conflict in my life. Forgive me if this is so and help me to side with the truth, even to my humiliation. But Lord, I realise that the truth stands sure, always. Therefore, I will not retaliate in this conflict; rather I turn the other cheek! Help me to do to others as I would have them do to me – even to my enemies. Help me to not try to pick a speck of dust out of my brother’s eye when there’s a log in my own. Dear Lord, I choose to walk in the opposite spirit in humility, truth and forgiveness. In Jesus’s name. Amen.”
