Dear God Tracker
In Christ Become an “Over-Comer” Instead of a “Round-Abouter”
I once preached a messaged entitled, “She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes.” This title was based on the old nursery rhyme by the same name. If you’re familiar with the song then you’ll know that the whole first verse is a repetition of this line. For some reason, “she” never gets around her mountain.
I’m sure you know some folk like that who, when they face problems in life (usually as a result of bad choices or bad habits), seem to keep going around the same mountains, over and over and over again. These bad-habit-mountains could be anything from habitual sin to unforgiveness to bad character traits or indeed, circumstances beyond your control. Take spending money, for instance. Wise spending is commendable but when spending becomes an obsession and incurs debts, it will turn out to be a bad-habit-mountain that will need to be overcome. Very often someone who faces a mountain like this will recover her financial dignity only to find herself falling back into debt all over again. This person will keep “coming round the mountain when she comes” until she learns to do some mountain climbing and climb over the peak of her bad-habit-mountain.
God-tracking involves acknowledging the Lord in all your ways and trusting him to direct your paths. God-tracking includes seeking first God’s principles, purposes and presidents as found in his word. In the word of God Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33). See that? Jesus has overcome the mountains. For example, when he was faced with the mountain of a 40-day fast and trial in the wilderness he did not scoot around the desert and pop into a McDonalds for a burger. And when Jesus was tempted by Satan he didn’t pretend that he was busy with something else, rather he climbed that mountain with the words, “It is written.” When Jesus was in Gethsemane late one formidable night he did say to his disciples, “Hey guys, we’re all pooped. Let’s have an early night.” He climbed the Mount of Olives and waited for his accusers to find him there. And when Jesus was hanging on the cross on Calvary’s hill he did not avoid the mountain of unforgiveness or bitterness. Instead he said, “Father, forgive them.”
You could be facing a mountain in your own life today. It could be a bad-habit-mountain or it could be a recurring difficulty that you just can’t seem to overcome. Perhaps it’s the mountain of repetitious offence you keep circling. In the words of Jesus, take heart! Jesus has already overcome all those mountains. Could be you’re seeking to stay on-track with God’s purposes for your life but you keep facing the same old inhibiting issue that keeps knocking you down. Dear God Tracker, remember faith can move those bad-habit-mountains. So pick yourself up and defy the norm by going over your mountain instead of scooting around it again. In Christ become an “over-comer” instead of a “round-abouter”.
