“Moses discovered, when he led the Israelites to the shores of the Promised Land, that the Lord God was the One alongside him all the way, helping him do what he could not do by his own ability. So is the Lord your Helper, too.”

Psalm 54:4
Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life

Moses was already an old man when he experienced the Lord’s call to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian captivity. He was watching over his father-in-law’s sheep one day when the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a burning bush. “I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people out of Egypt,” he said. Moses was flabbergasted at the call of God for such an auspicious task. He resisted the call of God by saying, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue. Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.” In reply, God said, “I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Moses obeyed the call of God and, with God’s help, went on to become one of the greatest leaders and prophets Israel was to ever know.

Do you sense the call of God on your life but don’t feel qualified to take it on? Are you facing a new task at work or a new role in a new job but feel intimidated by the learning curve? Perhaps you are working hard at school, college or university but are battling to take it all in. Whatever you may be facing today; whatever is intimidating you; whatever it is you feel unqualified to do, as Moses did, rest assured in the knowledge that the Lord your God is your helper. He who is omniscient and omnipotent will be your strength and your help in your time of need.

Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit after his return to the Father. He said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” If you know Jesus as Lord and Saviour, the Holy Spirit is in you and with you in every scope of life. The Greek word used to describe him in the New Testament is paraclete, which means advocate or counsellor, the one alongside. Moses discovered, when he led the Israelites to the shores of the Promised Land, that the Lord God was the One alongside him all the way, helping him do what he could not do by his own ability. So is the Lord your Helper, too.

Dear Lord, I receive your help now, gladly. Help me to rest in your strength

“Dear Lord, I feel like I’m drowning. I’m faced with such a workload that I feel I can’t cope. Sometimes I feel I just don’t possess the skill set to do this thing. I need help! You, O Lord, are my helper. Your Holy Spirit is with me – alongside me – in everything. So, I turn to you now and cry out for your help! Help me to work this out. Help me to get this job done. Help me to overcome these difficulties. Dear Lord, I receive your help now, gladly. Help me to rest in your strength. Amen.”

“Grace is God’s doing and God did it when he strengthened his Son to obey his will through the cross. And God will do it to strengthen you through your trial to follow God’s paramount will for your life.”

Hebrews 12:2
…looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Our God is high and exalted. He is our sovereign Majesty. His character is supreme, his power unlimited and his will, paramount. Jesus, facing certain crucifixion at sunrise, sought the will of Father God in the garden. We often forget that Jesus was as much a man as you and I are.

It was past midnight as he prayed in Gethsemane. His friends had fallen asleep a stone’s throw away from where he knelt in the dust. He was under such strain that the capillaries in the skin of his face burst, causing blood to mix with sweat. “Ah, Abba! Would that I did not need to go through with this. If it is your will, please take this cup from me.” Jesus faced the cup of God’s wrath because of your sin and my sin. “Yet not what I will, but what you will.” With that, an angel from God stood by him to give him strength.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God – God in the flesh. Yet, in Gethsemane we see his humanity revealed. Indeed, he is Son of God and Son of Man. As a man, Jesus had a choice. He could have simply stood up, woken Peter, James and John, and gone back home to bed. This was one of the final temptations that Jesus faced. Yet, he resisted. The Son of Man cried out to God his Father but God’s will was firm, and, thank God, Jesus submitted to the will of God.

Some may say that Jesus showed weakness in Gethsemane. Indeed, his flesh might have appeared weak but his Spirit was strong. Through this account of Jesus in Gethsemane, we have a clear example of faith. Faith is the ingredient that took Jesus through his trial. And faith is the ingredient that will take you through yours.

We are saved by grace through faith. Grace is God’s doing and God did it when he strengthened his Son to obey his will through the cross. And God will do it to strengthen you through your trial to follow God’s paramount will for your life.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

Thank you that your plans – your will – for my life are always for my good and your glory

“O Father God, sometimes I find it so difficult remaining true to your will. However, from the example of Jesus in Gethsemane, I rest in your might to give me strength to follow your will. Your grace is sufficient for me to do whatever you call me to do. So, like Jesus, I look through the trial ahead of me and see myself victorious on the other side. Thank you that your plans – your will – for my life are paramount and always for my good and your glory. Amen.”
