Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is staying in step with Jesus

Peter began to mildly panic as he hauled the net aboard his boat. When he noticed his small vessel beginning to list a little with the enormous catch he’d just made he called his partners, “James, John! I need some help over here!”

Peter had been fishing all night and caught nothing. After pulling his boat ashore, this new rabbi, Jesus, asked to use his boat as a platform to address the crowd. When he’d finished speaking Jesus told Peter to go out into the deep waters of the lake and try fishing again. Reluctantly Peter complied only to be surprised by the biggest catch he had ever made. After returning to shore he, together with James and John and his brother Andrew, left everything – even this colossal catch – to followed Jesus. For the next 3 years Peter was to witness the most amazing miracles and the demonstration of God’s love. Peter was even to walk on water as he stayed in step with Jesus.

This story always amazes me in that Peter, a family man and a businessman, literally left all his earthly goods behind to trudge the dusty roads of Judea and Galilee as a disciple of Jesus. Peter had much going for him but he chose to give it all up to follow the call of God to become a fisher of men. We know that Peter was an opinionated character with quick tongue and yet he humbly submitted to Jesus every step of the way. Jesus moulded Peter and shaped him into the rock on which he built his Church. In Acts we read of how Peter went on to become the overseer of the first ever Christian Church and to perform many miracles, in Jesus’ name. We see how he was the first to take the gospel to the gentiles and be instrumental in the expansion of the Kingdom of God. Peter was greatly used of God simply because he chose to stay in step with Jesus.

In our day and age we are faced with so many life building options on which to fashion our lives that we often become engrossed in activities or philosophes that draw us away from the simple truths of God’s word. God’s word is jam-packed with truth, hope and purpose and yet sadly, we all too often allow ourselves to become contaminated by the world’s falsehood, despair and indifference. Jesus is called the Way, the Truth and the Life for good reason. I like to think that he is the only way to know God’s truth and experience the life that it brings. Only Jesus is the source of our hope and happiness. Only Jesus is the source of our security and vision. Only Jesus can provide us with purpose and reason for living. Peter discovered this hope when he abandoned his fortune to follow Jesus.

Perhaps you’ve been pondering your calling in life. Maybe you’ve come to the place where you’re weighing up several options for the future and wonder what’s next. Well, if so then let me suggest that you follow Peter’s example by humbly staying in step with Jesus.

God-tracking is staying in step with Jesus.

Keep acknowledging God.
