Dear God Tracker

Would that I could Rise Effortlessly on Wings of an Eagle

One afternoon while on holiday Karen and I stopped off at a quaint beach café for a hot cuppa. The sea breeze was strong that day and as we sat at the outside tables I watched the birds flittering about. Above, noisy seagulls were making the most of the stout breeze off the ocean and soared effortlessly high above. I loved watching the gulls. They read the winds so well. They barely flapped a wing yet seemed to be up there for hours, carefully surveying the waters below.

Dropping my gaze for a second to take a sip of coffee I noticed a bunch of twittering sparrows fluttering around the outdoor tables, in search of a crumb. Cute as they are, sparrows are in a different league to seagulls. Wings were beating madly in a frantic effort to combat the strong winds. One little guy took off from a table to fly forward but landed 3 inches back from where he had launched. Despite his frenzied flutter this little sparrow got nowhere. In fact, he went backwards.

I saw myself in this bird. I too have a deep seated desire to move forward and on with God’s plans and purposes yet seem to get nowhere. I attend church every Sunday – twice – and three meetings during the week. I tithe, I pray and I read the Bible, and I even help little-old-ladies across the street from time to time but sometimes I feel as though I don’t seem to gain an inch in my spiritual walk. Like the frantic flutter of sparrow wings I weary myself so trying to do God’s work in my own strength. Would that I could rise effortlessly on wings of an eagle (…or seagull, as the case may be).

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus came to do God’s work when he died on the cross. His death and resurrection set me free of all obligations to good works. And the Holy Spirit is my helper to function in the work God has called me to do. All that I do should be done in and through Christ. So why is it then that I seem to think that personal effort in my many church works will gain me credit with God? I know that I am saved by grace and faith and not by works but, once saved, I seem to think that I need to show how saved I am by my many church works. Jesus also said, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Working for God can certainly be a busy occupation but if I was truly yoked with my saviour and helper then that work would be easy and light. You see, it is Christ in us who is doing the work. This is so, so that he can receive all the credit. So like a seagull rising high above the waves on outstretched wing I need to function solely by his power and might.

God-tracking is a breeze, in Christ.

Blessings

Dudley

Verse of the Week

Isaiah 40:31
but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Quote of the Week

A Sample of Dudley’s Fave Quotes.

“So many of us are so busy doing God's work, we forget sometimes that God is actually the One working.” --- Bonnie Ricks

Don’t Give-up, Look-up!

Look-up and Fix Your Eyes On Jesus!

Lord, My Help Comes from You

Psalm 121:1-2
I lift up my eyes to the hills--where does my help come from?  My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Pray
“Oh Father, I realise that I have been chasing about like a fluttering sparrow lately. I’m sorry for becoming so caught up in doing the work of God that I have neglected the God of the work. I’m sorry Lord and want to just still myself for a moment, take a deep breath and rise on the winds of your Spirit in me. I commit all that I do at home, at work and at church to you and ask for your strength, wisdom and guidance to do what you have called me to do. In you, I know my labour is not in vain. So I come to Jesus now and yoke up with you to fulfil your plans and purposes for my life. Lord, my help comes from you. Amen.”
