Ephesians 5:29
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.

Megan couldn’t bear to look at herself in the mirror anymore. Every time she did it felt as though the person staring back at her was scowling with contempt. Three months previously, she was raped while walking home late one night. “If only you had not walked that route. You should have known better. It was all your fault!” she cried out. Megan simply could not forgive herself for allowing this to happen to her.

Many of us find ourselves in similar situations. Not that we’ve all endured the filth of rape, but even many lesser atrocities may leave us feeling emotionally destitute and self-condemned. Sadly, many of these offences may not have even been our fault – as with Megan – but they can still inflict shame upon us, resulting in self-loathing and unforgiveness. But like all unforgiveness, unforgiveness only destroys the person holding onto the offence.

Jesus hung dying on a filthy wooden cross. With pain flooding his senses he looked down on the crowd who had crucified him: a few bloodied Roman soldiers, now gambling for his clothing; three members of the Sanhedrin witnessing his execution, each with a smug look of indignation on his face; a group of men pointing and laughing while the criminal on the cross to his left was jeering at hurling insults at him. “Father,” cried Jesus, “Father, forgive them.” Jesus’ hoarse words above the roar of the wind. “They don’t know what they are doing.”

For whatever offence you may have endured, you may be battling with unforgiveness today. Often, as in Megan’s case, you may be struggling with forgiving yourself. Often, we find it more difficult to forgive ourselves for bad things that happen to us, for reasons of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jesus commanded us to love our neighbours as ourselves. Thus, it would not be possible to love our neighbour if we could not love ourselves. Forgiveness demonstrates love.

If Jesus was able to forgive his accusers when he was crucified, I know that he will give you the strength to forgive others and yourself. His forgiveness extends even to you. Paul Boese said, “Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.” So, the next time you look in the mirror, look through the reflection of the cross.

God-tracking is forgiving yourself as Christ has forgiven you.

“I forgive myself and thank you for your strength to overcome this sense of self-loathing.”

“My Lord, I feel so ashamed today. Every time I look in the mirror I remember all the offences of my past. I repent of all my sins, O Lord, and thank you that you have forgiven me for all wrongdoing. However, this thing that I am battling to forgive myself for is still plaguing me. I confess to you that I consciously let it go today! I reject this feeling of guilt because I know you have forgiven me. Therefore, I forgive myself and I thank you for your strength to overcome this sense of self-loathing. So, the next time I look in the mirror, I will be looking for the reflection of the cross. Amen.”

In denying the resurrection, Satan attempts to cloud the truth of God’s grace and his redemptive plan for man. Beware of such falsehood.”

Psalm 25:5
Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.

We were just about to start our prayer meeting when Alan asked a question, “I was watching this documentary on TV last night where they said that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and went to live in France. They said they found a grave with his bones in it. Do you think it’s true?” As one, the prayer group was able to set Alan’s mind at rest, reassuring him that Jesus warned us that many false teachers would come and deny the truth of who he is. We pointed out that the truth will always be contradicted by the devil’s lies. Jesus is the Truth, and the devil is the father of lies.

Satan’s fall was as a result of his attempt to supersede God. But he is just a created being and not the Creator. Therefore, he was expelled from heaven and became the enemy of the truth. Satan cannot create anything new; he can only counterfeit what God has already created. This is evident in how he mimics and distorts the truth of God’s word. In this instance, he has taken the truth of the historical existence of Jesus and the relationship he had with his disciples and distorted this truth with tabloid sensationalism, indicative of our day and age.

In denying the resurrection, Satan attempts to cloud the truth of God’s grace and his redemptive plan for man. Beware of such falsehood. The Bible warned us about conspiracies like these thousands of years before these conspirators were even born. We are told that those who teach false doctrine (like this) are conceited and have an unhealthy interest in controversies resulting in envy, strife, malicious talk and suspicions. But Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

So, if you’re bamboozled by the outlandish conspiracies you see on TV or YouTube then let me encourage you to exercise the power of the finger… just switch it off! Fix your mind on things of God and resist the controversies of the father of lies. Walk with your face toward the light of God or you will stumble in your own shadow. Be encouraged to test everything by the certainty of word of God. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will keep you free.

God-tracking is walking in truth.

“Dear Father, thank you so much for the true fact that Jesus died and rose again to set me free from sin, death and Satan himself. If you’re feeling a little down in the mouth today, allow this Psalm to lift your head: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.”

Psalm 52:9
I will praise you forever for what you have done; in your name I will hope, for your name is good. I will praise you in the presence of your saints.

A while back, I produced a 30-second radio spot for a local radio station called The Blues Breaker. The
spot was designed to chase away the Monday morning blues of those who felt down in the mouth. One of these 30-second Blues Breakers went like this: “A Psalmist who had the blues once said, ‘Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?’

What has come to be known as the blues is a melancholic style of music with an African American folk origin, typically in a twelve-bar sequence. It developed in the rural slave communities of the southern USA towards the end of the 19th century. In those days, folks were forced to work the cotton fields in despair and dejection, longing to return to their homelands from where they were stolen by the slave traders. Understandably, this music was originally sad and depressive, hence the term the blues. However, today this style of music has developed into a legitimate genre.

It’s been suggested that many of the Psalms are songs of the blues. The Sons of Korah wailed to God that their souls were downcast. They had the blues. However, as with all the blues Psalms, there is always a glimmer hope… “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.”

If you’re feeling a little down in the mouth today, allow this Psalm to lift your head: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” A real blues breaker!

God-tracking breaks those blues.

But I know my hope is not in man or in circumstance, but my hope is in you, alone. So, today I will not give up, I will look and put my hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God. So, if you’re finding yourself facing an inharmonic situation today, then take your eyes off the musician to your left or right and fix them on Jesus, the great Conductor.”

Psalm 104:33
I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

I remember day trips to Symphony Hall with school when I was a child. I loved listening to the music, but mostly I loved watching the full symphony orchestra playing in unison. Dozens of musicians – brass, strings, percussion, wind – all playing as one. It seemed to my young mind as if they were all connected by a long invisible string that moved their hands in complete synchronicity. Then there was the guy up front with the wild hairstyle who waved a little stick around. The whole orchestra seemed completely mesmerised by his dance while the invisible string coming from his baton seemed to flutter their fingers upon their instruments, producing a vast sonata of sweet sounds.

Now, many years later, I still love symphonic music, but at least I know now that the conductor does not have an invisible string connected to each musician. And yet, I am still amazed at how every instrument works together with the other to produce beautiful music under his direction.

This reminds me of our walk with God. The scriptures tell us that all things work together for the good of those who love and serve Jesus. They also tell us that we are God’s workmanship, created to do good works. Your life is an orchestra comprised of many melodic instruments directed by the great Creator Conductor.

So, if you’re finding yourself facing an inharmonic situation today, then take your eyes off the musician to your left or right and fix them on Jesus, the great Conductor. Jesus is the author and perfector of your life. He knows all you’re going through and if you allow him to conduct your affairs then he will turn your life into a great symphony of praise.

God-tracking is a symphony of praise under the baton of Creator Conductor.

I take my eyes off my circumstances and fix them again on Jesus, author and conductor of my life

“Dear Father and Conductor of my life, I feel this word is for me today. Lately, it seems as though the symphony of my life has gone out of tune. I choose to acknowledge you again in every aspect of life and again put my trust in your hand to conduct my affairs. Thank you that you meet my needs. Thank you that you direct my path and thank you that you cause all things to work together in harmony for me, through all seasons of life. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is calling you to bend; to break; to be beaten and moulded by his word and his Spirit. He may be enlarging you and reshaping you, stretching you to shape you for his purposes.”

2 Corinthians 3:18
And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

I was tapping away at my computer, minding my own business, when the phone rang.  “Hello. This is
Dudley Anderson.”
“Hi Dudley, it’s Barbara,” said the voice on the other end. “Hi Barbara, how are you?”
“Fine. Dudley, I was just praying, and the Holy Spirit gave me an impression of a blacksmith, hammering away at steel on his anvil. As he hammered, sparks were flying everywhere. I feel this is a word for the church. God is shaping us," she said.

We chatted a little more and said goodbye. I hung up the phone, thinking about what she had said. As I returned to working on my laptop, I began to sense the Holy Spirit prompting me to pray. So, I walked downstairs and sat in my prayer chair in the lounge, opening my heart to the Lord. In less than a minute, I found myself on my knees calling out to God for wisdom and insight. Then it was as if I felt the Spirit tug at the sleeve of my spirit, and I literally turned my head to hear the word “resilience” in my heart.  “Resilience? What do you mean by resilience, Lord?” I asked. I had a notion that it had to do with a negative interpretation of the word, so I prayed against “resilience” in Jesus’ name.

After I felt I had come through in prayer, I returned to my computer and looked up the word resilience. I found it to mean: “The physical property of a material to return to its original shape or position after deformation that does not exceed its elastic limit.”  Hmmm, to return to its original shape, I mused out loud.

In Isaiah we read, “We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hands,” and in Jeremiah, “But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” This analogy has to with how a potter forms and reforms clay into the shape he requires it to be. However, for the clay to be shaped, it needs to be malleable and not resilient! Imagine if a lump of clay bounced back to being just a lump of clay after it was shaped into a lovely vase. Likewise, hard steel in the hand of a skilled blacksmith is malleable and not resilient. If these materials were resilient then they would always bounce back to their original shape and be useless to anybody.

The Lord may be doing a new thing in your life. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is calling you to bend; to break; to be beaten and moulded by his word and his Spirit. He may be enlarging you and reshaping you, stretching you to shape you for his purposes. Take courage and allow God to enlarge your boundaries. God’s ways are higher than your ways, and his ways are always for you are good, even when it seems the sparks begin to fly!

God-tracking is being malleable in the hands of the Blacksmith of Heaven.

And when those snakes and scorpions try to attack your feet, trample on them with all authority! Remember, the One in you is a thousand times greater than the one in the world.”

Luke 10:19
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

In Bible times, people did not have the luxury of motorised transport or railway systems to travel from one town to another. The only modes of transport they had at their disposal were camels, horses, donkeys and their feet. The Judean terrain was very unforgiving. Roads were little more than rocky, dusty pathways infested with scorpions and snakes. The average traveller travelled by foot, feet clad with nothing more than open sandals. I’m sure there must have been many a time when travellers were stung by scorpions, bitten by snakes or worse.

When the 72 disciples returned after Jesus had commissioned them for a short missionary trip (which they undertook by foot) they were so excited to tell of how even demons obeyed the authority of Jesus’ name. Jesus explained that he had witnessed how Satan was cast from heaven after his rebellion against God. He then went on to say, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Jesus knew that they would relate this analogy, referring to their authority over Satan and his hordes, with their experience of trekking the scorpion and snake-infested highways of the Judean desert in open sandals.

As you track the paths of life, you will often find yourself walking down demon-infested avenues. The Bible says that the devil is waiting to devour us at every turn. But take heart, Jesus has given you authority to trample on these scorpions and serpents. In his name, he has given you authority to overcome all the power of the enemy. And the enemy’s power is nothing more than lies; lies about your health, your finances, your future, and your relationships. So, walk boldly in the victory that Christ has given you by the power of his name. And when those snakes and scorpions try to attack your feet, trample on them with all authority! Remember, the One in you is a thousand times greater than the one in the world. As Smith Wigglesworth said, “The life that is in me is a thousand times bigger than I am outside.”

God-tracking is stomping on the snakes and scorpions on your path.
