“David might have agreed with the Apostle Paul who, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote, “I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

2 Corinthians 12:9
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Reading the story of David in 1 Samuel I was struck by how normal his life really was.  Indeed, David was a great king in the early history of Israel, and yes, he was a mighty worrier and a great poet but David was really more like you and me than we realise.

David was the youngest of his family and had a very lonely childhood, spending most of his early years in the countryside caring for his father’s sheep. It was probably here that David experienced God’s presence and power the most.

One day the prophet Samuel was told by God to find the son of Jesse (David’s father) whom he had chosen to be the next King of Israel. He eventually found David and anointed him as King, though Saul was still on the throne of Israel. Then we read how David killed the giant Goliath, which caused Saul to become jealous. Consequently, David fled into exiles to escape Saul’s intent to kill him. Here we see how, even though he still honoured God, David became a bandit, raiding villages.  Eventually Saul dies and David comes to the throne as a great God-fearing King.

Indeed, David’s life was dramatic and exciting but he endured many hardships, suffered ups and downs, like you and me, and even backslid at times. We read how he became quite rebellious and even committed adultery. This great prophet, poet and man of God was quite normal in many ways. This is why David’s Psalms are among some of the most honest and frank writings of scripture. Psalm 51 is prime example of David’s honesty. However, as we read some of his writings, we notice that David always kept his heart pure, humble, and submissive toward his Lord. He always honoured God and sought to do his will. This is why we read that the Lord said, “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all my will.”

David was an honest GodTracker. Like you and me, he led a normal life, thwart with conflicting success and failure but he always was quick to admit his need for God’s grace. David might have agreed with the Apostle Paul who, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote, “I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

God-tracking is living an honest life.

“Help me to live my life honestly and truthfully before you, by your grace.”

“Dear Lord, thank you for the example of the life of King David. I see in him a normal man like me. As David endured headship and rebellion, so do I endure headship and rebellion at times. As David was successful in his work so, by your grace, I enjoy occasional success. Lord, whether up or down, my life is in you. Like Paul, and probably Daivd, I confess, ‘I boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.’ Help me to live my life honestly and truthfully before you, by your grace. Amen.”

“Scripture illuminates the path along which the Holy Spirit is leading me. Remember, the word will always confirm the actions of the Spirit while the Spirit always activates the word.”

Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Immediately after Jesus had been baptised, according to the Law of Moses, the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness where he fasted for 40 days. Now in his early thirties, Jesus had been brought up under the sound of the Torah and the prophets. He was steeped in the word of God. Undoubtedly, he would have checked that every decision he made was confirmed by the word of God. Now, in the desert, he comes under the attack of Satan. Satan attempts to tempt Jesus to abandon his calling as Messiah and bow to his macabre continence. Deviously, Satan quotes Scripture at Jesus when tempting him to sin.

The word of God is sharper than a double-edged sword, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. The word of God is a light to our path, guiding our every move in life. However, all Scripture is subjective to interpretation. That is, you can take a scripture (as did Satan in the wilderness with Jesus) and make it mean what you want it to mean. Taking Scripture out of context is exceedingly dangerous. Doing so can lead you in completely the wrong direction in life.

I have learnt to always use Scripture as confirmation of what the Holy Spirit has already placed in my heart. The Spirit often uses circumstance to direct our life’s track. When turning to Scripture for guidance we ask, firstly, do my circumstances line up with sound doctrine? If not, then I am being led astray. Secondly, do the verses I read in the Bible confirm the leading or desire I sense in my heart? If not, then my desires are contrary to the will of God. Scripture illuminates the path the Holy Spirit is leading me along. Remember, the word will always confirm the actions of the Spirit while the Spirit always activates the word.

God-tracking is using Scripture to confirm desire.

“Please guide my circumstances and desires to always line up with your word that I may make godly and accurate plans in my life.”

“Dear Lord God, thank you for your holy word. Thank you that you have inspired so many men to write the Scriptures and have preserved these writings through millennia for me to hold in my hands today. I acknowledge the power and purpose of your word to guide my life and I submit to the leading if the Holy Spirit to illuminate your word as a light to my path. Please guide my circumstances and desires to always line up with your word so that I may make godly and accurate plans. Amen. “

If God has called you then he will watch over his calling to perform it. No matter the storm, have faith in his calling.”

Luke 8:25
But He said to them, “Where is your faith?”

Jesus and his disciples were crossing Lake Tiberias to minister in the province of the Gadarenes. These
men were committed to Jesus and his ministry. They knew God had a purpose for them to work alongside Jesus as he preached the good news of the Kingdom of God.

Transversing Tiberias is a fair distance for a small sailboat. Halfway through the trip a violent storm arose and waves began to swamp the boat. Jesus was asleep at the stern. Waking him, they yelled, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”  Jesus calmly rebuked the storm and the waves subsided. Then, turning to his men he said. “Where is your faith?”

Prior to this event Jesus had been ministering extensively. His disciples had witnessed many miracles and sat under his profound teaching. Jesus had selected these 12 diverse characters to stand by him in his work. God had a plan and a purpose for each of these men, who, ultimately, would take the gospel to the ends of the earth. Yet, when the storm arose, they doubted their calling, believing they would all die. Despite the storms, the difficulties and the opposition they faced, they should have realised that God’s purposes would prevail for each of them. They needed faith in their calling.

God knows the plans he has for you. His plans are for your success and blessing, for a hope and a future. God has a calling on your life. If you continue to walk by faith, and not by sight, then you will flow in the plans and purposes of God. Acknowledging him in all your ways will cause his purposes to unfold in your life. If God has called you then he will watch over his calling in your life, to perform it. No matter the storm, have faith in his calling.

God-tracking is faith in the calling of God.

“I put my faith in your calling and trust you to bring me to the over side of the lake, safely.”

“Father, I know you have a plan for my life. Dear God, I believe your purposes will prevail no matter the storms I face. You have called me to serve you and I believe that you will watch over your calling on my life to perform it. Forgive me for taking my eyes off you and looking at the waves swamping my boat. Despite the oppositions I face, I put my faith in your calling and trust you to bring me to the over side of the lake, safely. Amen.”
