God-Tracking Is Wisely Following God-Opportunities with Peace of Mind

 

I was attending a pastors’ gathering the other day when an acquaintance came up to me. “I just want to let you know that I have taken up a new position in a church 20 miles away,” he said. I was amazed because I knew Jim to be very settled in his old church and did not expect him to move. As if reading my thoughts he went on, “It’s not that I was unsettled or anything, I just had a sense God was moving me. I was advised to apply to another church but I did not have peace about it. Then this opportunity opened up and everything has just fallen into place.”

 

I could see the joy and expectation in Jim’s eyes as he explained how the Lord had worked out all the details of his move. God had already prepared the hearts and circumstances of his old church and raised someone up to take his place. His family is young so a move to a new town would be relatively easy. And every detail of his new appointment had been worked out as if he had written the script himself. You see, Jim had acknowledged God, sought his will through Word and Spirit and had kept his heart’s motives pure as he planned the move. This is God-tracking at its best.

 

Perhaps you are feeling the pull of God to move on. It could be that he has opened a new opportunity for you but you are uncertain as to whether it is the right one for you. Like my friend Jim, be encouraged to pray for God’s hand upon every detail of that move. Seek God’s plans and not your own, with the wisdom that comes from above. This wisdom begins with purity. Check your heart’s motives for making that move. You may well gain from the changes you face but be sure that it is God’s will you seek and not selfish ambition. Beware of that prowling lion who will cloud your judgement with seemingly delightful propositions. Remember, the Holy Spirit will always give you a transcending peace when you find his will for you.

God-Tracking Is Keeping Your Eyes Open Along Life’s Track 

One of the most ludicrous satnav stories I have ever heard involves a 67-year old Belgian lady who set out on a 34 mile journey to fetch a friend from her local airport. She programmed her satellite navigational device for directions to the airport but somehow something went wrong. When she neared the exit to the airport the device instructed her to continue going. Obediently she followed the electronic voice and kept on going and going and going without stopping, except for fuel. Finally, two days later, after crossing five international borders and ignoring French and German signs she arrived at Zagreb station, Croatia! When asked why she had not noticed that she was so far from home she simply replied, “I didn't ask myself any questions. I was just distracted, so I kept my foot down.” 

God-tracking is a bit like driving to the airport to fetch a friend. When we give our lives to Jesus we consciously seek his directions for our way forward. However, the difference between navigating our God-tracks with Christ and navigating the highways with a satnav is Christ cannot be programmed by us! When we acknowledge the Lord in all our ways we surrender the right to selfishly programme our lives. When we acknowledge the Lord he directs our paths by faith and not by fate. Tracking God’s highway involves keeping our eyes open for road signs and potholes and faithfully listening for our Lord’s directions along the way.  

In that new job or house move or relationship issue you are facing today tune into your Lord’s voice. Open the scriptures seek him in prayer and watch out for the road signs along the way. I am confident that if you acknowledge the Lord then he will guide you and comfort you; he will strengthen you and refresh you. The Lord is faithful and he will bless you beyond your wildest imagination. Remember, your faith pleases God so walk in faith and know that he will reward you. But whatever you do, do not become distracted by the world’s commentary on your life’s road or you will soon find that you are programmed to become lost.

God-Tracking Is a Labour of Rest

 

“But I am trying to be born again,” Sue said to me as the bus rolled on toward the local Baptist church we attended every other Sunday evening. These were the tough yet exciting days of my police training. Every other Sunday, when we were not on weekend pass, we were bussed from the training camp to a local church of our choice. “How do mean, ‘trying to be born again’,” I asked. ”You know,” Sue answered with note of frustration, “I’m really working at trying to be on God’s side and to deal with life’s difficulties. I try my hardest but somehow I’m just not getting it right with God.”

 

Like so many of us, Sue was doing all she could do to “get it right with God”. She’d had her fair share of difficulties and was trying very hard to live a good life but, sadly Sue had been doing it all in her own strength. After all when you commit to become a Christian there are so many things to get right, aren’t there? It’s wearisome trying to be a Christian. But didn’t Jesus once say, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest?” And then he added that we should be yoked with him. In other words, are we to come to him for rest but then also labour with him? This is paradoxical: labour in rest.

 

Jesus himself completed all the work for our salvation upon the cross asyn'get it right”rk at anything then we should be working at resting in the labour of Christ.ta him. to help, sins to stop he died and when he rose from the dead he set us free from sin and strife. Jesus was sinless and yet he was tempted to sin. He laboured at remaining sinless before God so that he would be sinless at the cross. When he died, Christ became the Sabbath rest for all who call on his name. He completed all that was required in order to earn God’s favour. You could say Jesus ticked all the boxes on the application form for life. This means that he not only bore sin but he laboured for righteousness, healing, joy, peace and blessing. Jesus set us free from our efforts to “get it right with God” by becoming the “yes” and “amen” to all of God’s promises to us. So if we are to work at anything then let us work at resting in the labour of Christ.

 

God-tracking is a labour of rest.

God-Tracking Is Always Acknowledging the Lord In Every Decision You Make 

In January 1997 Karen and I sat across the kitchen table in a friend’s house some 5,600 miles from our old home in South Africa. She and I had always believed in acknowledging God in every decision we made and two years prior, after sensing the call of God, we had made the decision to move abroad. I had written to several companies in English speaking countries for job opportunity in the radio or music ministries but had only received a moderate response from England. So, with faith in the call of God and trust that he would always direct our paths we sold our home and booked a trip to visit friends in the UK. Both Karen and I qualified for ancestry visas to live in Britain so we sensed God’s leading to move to that country. Our month’s holiday was over and with return tickets to S.A. in our pockets, we sat gazing searchingly into each other’s eyes over a cup of coffee. “We have acknowledged God in all this; as always,” said my lovely wife, “so I’m sure he will direct the outcome.”

“Hmm,” I pondered. “No doubt God has opened a door for us here and he has led us as he always has in the past. But, as always, it’s we who need to make the decision. So… yes, let’s go for it!”

At its best, God-tracking requires that we acknowledge God’s foreknowledge of the plans and purposes he has for our lives and then step out in faith and make those decisions based upon the sure fact that he will direct our paths. Scriptures tell us that as we try to map out our lives it is God himself who determines our steps. So we need to always seek his face through the Bible, in prayer and in confession then simply make those choices with our eyes on Jesus. 

I left my family in the UK and returned to South Africa. After winding things up a few things I returned to start my new life in my new home in England. However, it took all of one year for me to become employed during which time we used up all our savings. Those first few years were tough – very tough – but we knew without doubt that God had moved us, because we had made our decisions in acknowledgement of his plans and purposes. Now many years later I can firmly say that God has proven his purpose for my family and me as he has directed our paths in ways that far outstripped our dreams. 

God-tracking is always acknowledging the Lord in every decision you make.

God-Tracking Is Walking In Faith That His Plans Will Prevail 

Through the prophet Jeremiah the Lord has said, “I know the plans I have for you.” He goes on to say that these plans are to give us a hope and a future. The Lord God knows our tomorrow. He has foreknowledge of all we will go through in order to realise his plans. However, the Bible also tells us that we have an enemy who is intent on our destruction. The devil’s plans are to disrupt the plans of God for our lives.  

After we were married Karen and I moved from Johannesburg to Pretoria in South Africa where we lived. After we had settled in we looked around for a church to join. For three months we attended a very large church but somehow knew that God didn’t want us there. One day as I was driving through town I came across a small whitewashed church set back from the road. I was intrigued so I stopped the car and made my way to the notice board. As I approached the door a man came out and greeted me. We struck up a conversation and I discovered that he was the pastor. He had just popped into the church at the exact moment that I arrived. We chatted a while and then I left. As it turned out my best friend had also recently moved to Pretoria with his wife and was looking for a church so we both decided that we’d give this church a try that coming Sunday. 

Unbeknownst to me the whole worship team had grievously walked out the week before we arrived, leaving the pastor in a quandary. God had a purpose for that man and that church but somehow the devil had second-guessed God’s plans and caused disorder. Oddly enough (funny how God works) my friend and I were both guitarists with some year’s experience in worship leading. And so it turned out that at the exact time that the devil had disrupted God’s plans for our new pastor’s life, God’s plans for my friend and me were to coincide our paths with his, so frustrating the devil’s attempt to derail God’s purposes. 

The devil will do whatever he can to disturb God’s plans for you. Satan’s plans are wrought through sin, illness, loss, disorder, confusion and through physical attack. Satan is not unintelligent. He too has strategy and purpose and, although he does not know God’s plans for your life, he can make a very good guess at God’s purposes for you. He will do his level best to derail you from your God-track. But take courage, Jesus has overcome the devil! So if you feel as though your plans for the future are falling apart then simply continue to acknowledge the Lord in all you do and keep your eyes of Jesus. Then trust that your Lord will direct your path, always! 

God-Tracking is walking in faith that his plans will prevail.
