Dear God-tracker 

God-tracking is walking in the light of his glory and grace 

In 1922 Helen Lemmel wrote a wonderful song, still sung extensively today.  In the chorus she wrote: 

 Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace. 

The scriptures put it this way: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

I know of a woman who, together with her family, deeply loved and served the Lord. We’ll call her Jan. Sadly Jan had a slow degenerate disease that was to eventually take her life. However, as a young woman she married a loving man and had two wonderful children. Her children grew up to know and love Jesus, too. One day her 21-year old son, an avid motorcycle enthusiast, was coming home late one night and had an accident that took his life. The family was devastated but Jan held them together with the hope that only Jesus can offer. Shortly afterward her daughter married and left home. It was then that her husband had an extra marital affair and left Jan to marry another woman. Jan was left alone and dejected with a debilitating disease. As the years rolled by she became increasingly ill until, in her mid-60s, Jan passed away.

A sad life, indeed. Or was it? Throughout her trials right up until her last breath Jan never denied her Lord. She remained true to worshipping and loving God with all her heart, soul and flesh. She always had faith, hope and cheer and, in spite of her circumstance, she acknowledged the Lord every day, walking in his tender care. Jan kept her eyes on Jesus and in her times of deepest despair she would sing, “I turn my eyes upon Jesus and the things of the earth grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.”

It could be that you’re going through a Jan experience today. Perhaps you’ve been deserted or rejected by a loved one. Maybe you’ve suffered loss and bereavement. Possibly you’ve lost your security and tomorrow looks a little less than rosy from where you’re standing today. When you feel as though the cords of death have entangled you and you’re being overcome by trouble and sorrows, call on his name. The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion and will deliver you, always!

So continue to acknowledge the Lord in all your ways, keep your eyes on Jesus and scorn that cross ahead of you. Hold onto the promises of God through every trial, standing in the authority of his name and his word to save, deliver and heal you. Remember, Jesus is already on the other side of your tomorrow meeting your every need.

Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is rising to the challenge of being a warrior for God

The impoverished Israelites called out to God when they were under suppression by the Midianites. Every harvest time the Midianites would ransack their land and plunder their crops. It became so intense that God’s people began threshing their grain in winepresses to hide it from their enemy. The Lord responded by sending an angel to a young man called, Gideon. “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior,” said the angel. He then went on to explain how God had called Gideon to deliver his people from the hand of the Midianites. Flabbergasted, young Gideon might have said, “Dear Lord, I think you’ve got the wrong man. A warrior? Me? No way!” The Bible says he asked, “How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” But through the angel the Lord answered Gideon, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together.”

You may feel that you’re the least in your family or community. You may think you’re uneducated, untalented and unqualified to serve the Lord. You may find yourself today hiding in the shadows as Gideon hid in a winepress, because you’re afraid of what the future might hold. If that’s you then let me encourage you with the words that the angel used to encourage Gideon. The Lord says, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together.”

Just as young timid Gideon rose to defeat the Midianites and become one of the greatest  judges at this time in Israel’s history, so the Lord your God is raising you up to serve him, at this time in your life. He may not be calling you to the mission field or to pastor a church or defeat an army, but the Lord is calling you to go and share your life with others. You have a mighty story to tell of how the Lord has healed and delivered you. You have good news to share about the new life you have found in Jesus. The Lord has done wonderful works in your life that will only bless and encourage others to rise to the challenge of what God is calling them to me. So, don’t hold back! Step out in faith and courage to make the most of every opportunity that the Lord is bringing your way, today. God is turning you into a mighty warrior and he is with you in this fight!

GOD-TRACKING IS ENJOYING GOD’S WILL ON EARTH AS IT IS ENJOYED IN HEAVEN

Like most people my age, I grew up reciting the Lord ’s Prayer at school every day. I remember, throughout primary school, the class would stand together first thing in the morning and recite by rote, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done…” This prayer became the standard starting point of my prayer life when I eventually gave my life to Jesus.

These words are a powerful yet simple prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to pray. Though a prescribed prayer, I believe that this prayer is a fabulous formula to use to develop your prayer life. It begins with praise and worship, takes you through submission to God, making requests for your needs, confession of sin and on into spiritual warfare against the forces of evil. However, for me, the most powerful part of this prayer is when we pray the words, “…thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

God-tracking is all about submitting to the perfect will of God. I believe that God has a plan for our lives; a plan to prosper us and hope for a good future. If you know Christ as saviour and acknowledge the Lord in all you do then you will put yourself in line to enjoy the plans of God for your life. God’s plans are God’s will for you. The scripture calls us to renew our thinking so that we will be transformed to know and experience God’s perfect will. This implies that sometimes our thinking is so clouded by the patterns of this world that we don’t clearly see God’s plans for our lives and end up stepping outside of his perfect will. Therefore, we need to prayerfully correct our thinking and set our minds on things above and not on earthly things. Doing this will open us to discover God’s amazing plans for our lives and lead us to walk squarely within his will. So pray, your will be done in my daily life, O Lord, as it is done in heaven.

God’s will is explicitly done in Heaven! Nothing in heaven is external to the will of God. All the angels and the hosts of heaven behave exactly according to God’s good commands and God’s good desires. Because of this we may conclude that there is absolutely no evil, decay or depravity in heaven. In the glories of heaven there is no sickness, disease, depression, worry or want. In heaven there is no death, no mourning or crying or pain. Here God is all in all. The Lord Almighty is the light and life of heaven. There is absolutely no need for anything in heaven. This is the will of God in heaven and this can be the will God for you, if you dare to pray, your will be done in my daily life, O Lord, as it is done in heaven.

Dear God-tracker 

God-tracking forgiving yourself as Christ has forgiven you 

Megan couldn’t bear to look at herself in the mirror anymore. Every time she did it felt as though the person she was looking at was scowling back at her with contempt. Three months previously Megan had been raped while walking home late one night. “If only you had not walked that route. You should have known better. It was all your fault!” She simply could not forgive herself for allowing this to happen. 

Many of us find ourselves in similar situations as Megan did. Not that we’ve all endured the filth of rape, but even many lesser atrocities we may have endured, often leave us feeling emotionally destitute and self-condemned. Sadly, many of these offences may not have even been our fault – as with Megan – but they still inflict shame upon us, resulting in self-unforgiveness. But like all unforgiveness, unforgiveness only destroys the person holding onto the offence.  

Jesus hung dying on a filthy wooden cross. With pain flooding his senses he looked down on the crowd who had crucified him: a few bloodied Roman soldiers, now gambling for his clothing; three members of the Sanhedrin witnessing his execution, each with a smug look of indignation on his face; a group of men pointing and laughing and the criminal on the cross to his left was jeering at and blaming Jesus. “Father… Father, forgive them,” came Jesus’ hoarse words above the wind. “They don’t know what they are doing.” 

Whatever offence you may have endured, whether your fault or not, you may be battling with unforgiveness today. However, the unforgiveness you’re struggling with may not be for anyone but yourself. Often we find it most difficult to forgive ourselves for bad things that happen to us. As with Megan, often it is a false sense unforgiveness perceived for reason of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This type of self-condemnation can often result from another person’s indifference or attack on us. Well, if Jesus was able to forgive his accusers for attacking him in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he could have simply walked away before they arrived, I know that you are able, by his strength, to forgive yourself.  

The next time you look into the mirror, look through the reflection of the cross.

The next time I look into the mirror, I will be looking for the reflection of the cross 

“My Lord, I feel so guilty today. Every time I look into the mirror I remember all the offences of my past. I repent of all my sin, O Lord, and thank you that you have forgiven me for all wrong doing. However, this thing that I am battling to forgive myself for is still plaguing me. I confess to you that I consciously let it go, today! I reject this feeling of guilt, because I know you have forgiven me. Therefore, I forgive myself and thank you for your strength to overcome this sense of self-unforgiveness. Thank you that you have borne this offence for me at Calvary. So, the next time I look into the mirror, I will be looking for the reflection of the cross.

Dear God-tracker 

God-tracking is being fixated with the Truth 

We were just about to start our prayer meeting when Alan asked a question, “I was watching this documentary on TV last night where they said that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and went to live in France. They said they found a grave with his bones in it. Do think it’s true?” As one, the prayer group was able to set Alan’s mind at rest, reassuring him that Jesus warned us that many false teachers would rise up and deny the truth of who he is. We pointed out that the truth will always be contradicted by the devil. Jesus is the Truth and the devil is the father of lies. 

Indeed, the devil is the father of lies and in him there is no truth. Satan’s fall was as a result of his attempt to supersede God. But he is just a created being and not the Creator. Therefore, he was expelled from heaven as the enemy of the truth. Satan cannot create anything new; he can only counterfeit what God has already created. This is evident in how he mimics and distorts the truth of God’s word. In this instance, he has taken the truth of the existence of Jesus and the relationship he had with his disciples but distorted this truth with tabloid sensationalism, indicative of our day and age. In denying the resurrection, Satan attempts to reduce the truth of God’s grace and his redemptive plan for man to a mere mythological tale of days gone by. Beware of such falsehood, God-tracker! The Bible warned us about conspiracies like this thousands of years before these conspirators were even born. We are told that those who teach false doctrine (like this) are conceited and have an unhealthy interest in controversies resulting in envy, strife, malicious talk and suspicions. But Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

 

So, if you’re confused by scandalous controversy; if you’re bamboozled by the outlandish conspiracies you see on TV or YouTube then let me encourage you to exercise the power of the finger… just switch it off! Fix your mind on things of God and resist the controversies of the father of lies. Walk with your face toward the light of God or you will stumble in your own shadow. Be encouraged to test everything by the word of God as found in the Bible. And stay on track with God’s plans for your life by continuing to acknowledge him in all you do. Your Lord is faithful and his love for you endures forever!

Dear God-tracker 

God-tracking is chasing away the blues  

A while back I produced a 30 second radio spot for a local radio station called, The Blues Breaker. The spot was designed to chase away the blues of those who felt down in the mouth on a Monday morning. One of these 30 second Blues Breakers went like this: “A Psalmist who had the blues once said, ‘Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?’ Sound familiar? Well this guy went on to say, ‘Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.’ ” 

What has come to be known as the blues is a melancholic style of music with an African American folk origin, typically in a twelve-bar sequence. It developed in the rural slave communities of southern USA towards the end of the 19th century. Folk were forced to work the cotton fields in despair and dejection, longing back to families in their homelands from where they were stolen by the slave trade. Understandably, this music was originally sad and depressive. However, today this style of music has developed into a legitimate genre known as rhythm and blues. I’ve heard it said that the music of the psalms is packed with “the blues”.  We read one instance of this above where the Sons of Korah wailed to God that their souls were downcast. Yet, there is always expectation in the psalms of the blues as when we read that our God is always our hope!

So, if you’re feeling a little down in the mouth today, allow this psalm to lift up your head and chase away those blues: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Now, ain’t that good news?!

Dear God-tracker 

God-tracking is a symphony of praise under the baton of the great Conductor 

I remember day trips to symphony hall with school when I was a child. I loved listening to the music but mostly I loved watching the full symphony orchestra playing together. Dozens of musicians – brass, strings, percussion, wind – all playing as one. It seemed to my young mind as if they were all connected by a long invisible string that moved their hands in complete unison. Then there was the guy up front with the wild hairstyle that waved a little stick around. The whole orchestra seemed completely mesmerized by his dance while the invisible string coming from his baton seemed to flutter their fingers upon their instruments, producing a vast array of sweet sounds. They all seemed to all be working together for the good of performing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Now, many years later I still do love symphony music but at least I know now that the conductor does not have an invisible string connected to each musician. And yet, I am still amazed at how every instrument works together with the other to produce beautiful music under his direction. It reminds me of our walk with God. The scriptures tell us that all things work together for the good of those who love and serve Jesus. They also tell us that we are God’s workmanship created to do good works. Your life is an orchestra comprised of many instruments that, in the hands of the Creator Conductor, will create marvelously melodious music. Every circumstance, every situation, every relationship and every activity you do, as acknowledging the Lord in it all, will work together symphonically for your good and his glory.

So, if you’re finding yourself facing an inharmonic situation today then take your eyes off the musician to your left or right and fix them on Jesus, the great Conductor. Jesus is the author and perfector of your life. He knows all you’re going through and is already in your tomorrow meeting your every need. If you will allow him to conduct your life with his invisible strings, causing every detail to play in tune with his will, then he will turn your life into a masterpiece of his composition.

So, listen for his pitch and keep your eye on the Conductor through all the seasons of your life. Do this and I know that your Lord will turn your life into a great symphony of his praise.
