Dear God Tracker

Jesus Replaced The Marked Original In Your Photocopier.

“I’m sure that mark wasn’t on the original,” I mused to myself as I stood gazing at the black splotch on the lovely white printed page that had just immerged from my photocopy machine. Opening the top of the machine I examined the original form and sure enough, there it was, a smudge just off to the right of the second paragraph. Paging through the 50 copies I had made I noticed that every copy reproduced by my Xerox machine had the offending mark in the same spot. I must have had a grubby thumb when I placed that original document in the machine.

Thinking spiritual at this point my mind wondered about sin. In the beginning God had created us in his image – perfect, sinless, spotless. Adam and his dear wife were clean and crisp originals of the human race but sadly, things did not remain that way. Shortly after man was created Satan placed his grubby thumbprint on him resulting in violation of the Creator’s image. The moment Adam and Eve disobeyed God, a dirty great black smudge called, sin appeared on the image of mankind. Just like the 50 pages in my hand that had been spoiled because of the marked original, every copy made from the original man would reproduce the same spoiled image, every time.

The Bible says that all have sinned and missed God’s perfect image. Every son of Adam has the mark of sin on him, just like my marked photocopy. This is why God, in his gracious providence, sent us the original image, his Son. Jesus is the unique image of God, because he is God. Colossians 1:15 says, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” For our sake then, though sinless, Jesus took the mark of sin upon himself when he died on the cross but left sinin the tomb when he rose from the dead. If, because of sin, the copies made from Adam bore the same marred image then, because of the spotless Christ and by faith in him, every copy made from his image will be immaculate and clean. He became sin for you so that, in him, you could become the righteousness of God. If you confess and repent of sin then he will forgive you and purify you from all unrighteousness.

It’s not by religious observance, it’s not my good works and it’s not my any human effort that you could ever remove the smudge of sin from the pages of your life.  It is only by calling on the name of Jesus, God’s pure and spotless original, and by putting your faith in him that you can remove the stain of sin from your life. Jesus replaced the marked original in your photocopier.

God-tracking is reproducing God’s original in the machine of your life.

Your Concrete Demonstration of Heaven Is Your Faith

I was listening to a well known radio station as I pulled into my office car park. “Many religious groups teach their children about heaven and hell,” came a woman’s voice over the airways, “but neither can be proven. We should not quell our children’s fear of death by giving them the hope of heaven,” she said and then boldly added: “Heaven is a fairy tale that cannot be concretely demonstrated.” This woman went on to describe that dying is simply a termination of life and all that remains is darkness in the grave. How sad; how hopeless.

Later that evening I was watching a documentary on television about Israel and the 6-day war. After Israel had occupied the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan heights in 1967 Egypt and Syria launched an aggressive conspired effort to regain this land again in 1973. However, despite a massive supply of weapons from the Soviet Union, both Egypt and Syria were unsuccessful in their bid to regain the land and push the Jews into the sea. As I watched I found myself asking the question, “Why has the Lord always protected Israel and guarded her interests?” Then it was as though the God of Israel himself by his Holy Spirit whispered into my heart: “It’s because of my promise to my servant Abraham. I never violate my promises or my righteousness.”

I then realised that the same God who had made a promise to Abraham that his descendents would occupy the land of Canaan (modern day Israel), is the God who has promised me eternal life. You see, Abraham believed God’s word and his faith in God’s promise had made him righteous. Now Abraham is the father of all who believe, which means that if you have faith in the death and resurrection of Christ and confess him as Lord you are saved from sin, death and hell. The scripture says that by God’s grace, through faith, we have the hope of heaven. Faith was the substance of Abraham’s success. Faith is the substance of things he hoped for. Faith accredited Abraham with righteousness, because he believed God’s promise. Likewise, your faith has credited you with God’s righteousness, because of Jesus (look up 2 Corinthians 5:21). As I watched the TV I realised that the reason God so protects Israel and guards her interests is because of his word – his promise – to Abraham. So if Abraham, whose descendents still occupy Canaan, received righteousness and eternal promise through faith then we too have righteousness and the promise of heaven through the same substance – faith! Therefore, your concrete demonstration of heaven is your faith.

God-tracking is the hope of heaven by faith.

In Christ Become an “Over-Comer” Instead of a “Round-Abouter”

I once preached a messaged entitled, “She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes.” This title was based on the old nursery rhyme by the same name. If you’re familiar with the song then you’ll know that the whole first verse is a repetition of this line. For some reason, “she” never gets around her mountain.

I’m sure you know some folk like that who, when they face problems in life (usually as a result of bad choices or bad habits), seem to keep going around the same mountains, over and over and over again. These bad-habit-mountains could be anything from habitual sin to unforgiveness to bad character traits or indeed, circumstances beyond your control. Take spending money, for instance. Wise spending is commendable but when spending becomes an obsession and incurs debts, it will turn out to be a bad-habit-mountain that will need to be overcome. Very often someone who faces a mountain like this will recover her financial dignity only to find herself falling back into debt all over again. This person will keep “coming round the mountain when she comes” until she learns to do some mountain climbing and climb over the peak of her bad-habit-mountain.

God-tracking involves acknowledging the Lord in all your ways and trusting him to direct your paths. God-tracking includes seeking first God’s principles, purposes and presidents as found in his word. In the word of God Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33). See that? Jesus has overcome the mountains. For example, when he was faced with the mountain of a 40-day fast and trial in the wilderness he did not scoot around the desert and pop into a McDonalds for a burger. And when Jesus was tempted by Satan he didn’t pretend that he was busy with something else, rather he climbed that mountain with the words, “It is written.” When Jesus was in Gethsemane late one formidable night he did say to his disciples, “Hey guys, we’re all pooped. Let’s have an early night.” He climbed the Mount of Olives and waited for his accusers to find him there. And when Jesus was hanging on the cross on Calvary’s hill he did not avoid the mountain of unforgiveness or bitterness. Instead he said, “Father, forgive them.”

You could be facing a mountain in your own life today. It could be a bad-habit-mountain or it could be a recurring difficulty that you just can’t seem to overcome. Perhaps it’s the mountain of repetitious offence you keep circling. In the words of Jesus, take heart! Jesus has already overcome all those mountains. Could be you’re seeking to stay on-track with God’s purposes for your life but you keep facing the same old inhibiting issue that keeps knocking you down. Dear God Tracker, remember faith can move those bad-habit-mountains. So pick yourself up and defy the norm by going over your mountain instead of scooting around it again. In Christ become an “over-comer” instead of a “round-abouter”.

Let’s Play Head-Over-The-Hills of Life

I discovered a wonderful little anecdote in one of my sources the other day, part of which I would like to share with you. It’s called, “My Resignation as an Adult.” I have no idea who wrote it. If you know then please let me know. It goes like this:

“I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of a 5 year old again. I want to go to McDonald's and think that it is a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples in a pond with stones. I want to think M&Ms are better than money… because you can eat them! I want to lie under a big oak tree and watch the ants march up its trunk all day long. I want to roll down the hill in the park on a hot summer’s day and sledge down it in winter. I want to go fishing and care more about catching the tadpoles along the shore than the big bass in the lake. I want to think the world is fair and fun. I want to return to a time when life was simple; when all I knew about were colours, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes. A time when I didn't know what I know now and when all I knew was to be happy because I was blissfully unaware of all the things that should make me worried. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, dreams, the imagination, a kiss-that-makes-it-better, making angels in the snow, and that my dad is the strongest person in the whole world. So here's my cheque book and my car keys, my credit cards and all the bills, my stocks and bonds, my collections, my insurance premiums, my pension, my job, my house and the payments, my e-mail address, Facebook account, my iPhone, my iPad , my laptop and my wrist watch. I am officially resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this with me further, you'll have to catch me, 'cause ... Tag! You're it!”

There is a game I loved to play when I was a child, it was called, head-over-hills. Perhaps you played it, too. I would climb up a rise and then roll down it, head-over-hills. At the bottom I would try to stand up but would instantly fall over again, because I was so dizzy. In Galatians 3:13 I read that Jesus has redeemed me from the curse of sin and death by becoming a curse for me. Therefore, in Christ, I have been set free from the curse of sin and the curse of law. In him I have become the head and not the tail. This means that I have victory and freedom over the hills in my life like depression, worry, fear and self-doubt, because the Spirit of life has set me free of the law of sin and death. So I can once again walk in joy and peace with the carefree freedom of a child, because Jesus’ yoke is easy and his burden is light.

Dear God Tracker, let’s play head-over-the-hills of life by humbling ourselves like little children and walking hand in hand with our Abba Father. After all, my dad is the strongest person in the whole world!
