God-tracking is victoriously shaking off the irritations of the old life   

There was once a story told of a man who, while walking through a park one day, passed a massive oak tree with a vine that had grown up its trunk. Over the years the vine had grown taller and taller. By the time he passed by, the entire lower half of the tree was covered by the vine's creepers. This huge, solid oak was literally being taken over; the life was being squeezed from it. But the park gardener had seen the danger. He had taken a saw and severed the trunk of the vine. The tangled mass of the vine's branches still clung to the oak, but the vine was now dead. Over time these branches and creepers would dry and fall from the tree, one by one. 

There was once a story told of man who was created in God’s image. He dwelt in a beautiful garden and was splendid and pure. One day the devil persuaded the man to deny God and so the man fell from God’s glory. Slowly a vine of deceit and evil grew up around this man. The vine was so intense that it sucked the very life out of him. But one day the Gardener, in his grace and love, sent his only Son to sever the stem of that vine and free the man from its life sapping grip. The vine perished and the devil lost his hold on the man. Though its creepers still clung to him, the man was no longer under its bondage. Slowly, as he grew closer the Lord his God, one by one, the branches and creepers of the vine that had entangled and threatened the man’s life, fell away. The man was free to once again enjoy the splendour of his created purpose: to freely walk with Father in the cool of the day. 

Once sin and depravity gripped your life, dear God-tracker, but God, in his grace and love, sent Jesus to die in your place and free you from the bondage of sin. When Jesus humbly offered himself at Calvary he made a public spectacle of Satan, triumphing over him by the cross. Jesus severed the stem of Satan’s grip on your life. But over the years that his vine had grown up around the trunk of your life, Satan’s riles had attached themselves to you in many ways. These irritants of sin and bondage may still need to fall away. Over time, as you walk with God, he will reveal these irritants to you and help you deal with them, by his grace. As you do so, they will fall away and whither. Remember Satan no longer has a hold of you. Jesus has conquered the devil and handed the victory to you. Therefore, you are more than a conqueror in Christ. If you continue to dwell under God’s care then you will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. The One who now lives in you is greater than the one who attempts to cling to you. You have overcome the devil by the Blood of Jesus. Stand strong in the victory of Jesus as you watch that old life wither and die away.

God-tracking results in good produce from pruned branches 

On more than one occasion Jesus used a vineyard or workers of a vineyard as the subjects of his parables. Growing up in Israel, he would have well understood the finer principles associated with nurturing the vine to produce the best and most succulent grapes. Jesus knew how important it was to yearly cut back a vine so that it will both grow well and produce better fruit.  

Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” Then later he said, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” By this analogy Jesus is referring to vineyard husbandry, which includes pruning the plants each year so that they produce better fruit. Just as a vineyard keeper would prune the vines so the Father cuts away the dead wood or malformed branches of the Vine so as that the Vine will produce a better produce. 

You may feel as though you’re being pruned right now. There may be circumstances or situations in your life that have died off or become malformed through the course of time. These could include a bad habit, a wrong relationship or a wrong involvement. God could be pruning your vine today, removing apathy, indifference or pessimism. Whatever it is that you feel is being cut off, you can be sure that you will not be left naked or reduced in any way. Jesus said that God cuts off the branches that bear no fruit so that those that do, will produce even more fruit. Be encouraged, dear God-tracker, that God is enabling your life. He is removing those things that are time wasters or soul destroyers. God will never cut back anything that is to your benefit. And believe me when I tell you that, unless God cuts out these dead things from your life, you will not be productive. God desires for you to produce good results in your studies, your career, your home life and your church life. Your Father is pruning you so that you will produce good fruit in your relationships, your work and your commitments. Embrace the pruning of the vineyard Keeper so that your harvest will be plentiful!

God-tracking is remaining hopeful in spite of hopeless prospects

Halford E. Luccock in his book Unfinished Business  tells the story: “One night at dinner a man, who had spent many summers in Maine, fascinated his companions by telling of his experiences in a little town named Flagstaff. The town was to be flooded, as part of a large lake for which a dam was being built. In the months before it was to be flooded, all improvements and repairs in the whole town were stopped. What was the use of painting a house if it were to be covered with water in six months? Why repair anything when the whole village was to be wiped out? So, week by week, the whole town became more and more bedraggled, more gone to seed, more woebegone. Then he added by way of explanation: ‘Where there is no faith in the future, there is no power in the present.’”

Hopelessness has a horrible habit of becoming increasingly hopeless the more we harp on it. Many people are prone to a mood of hopelessness. When they look at the glass they see it as half empty and always expect the worst possible outcome to adverse circumstances. When difficulties come along - as they will in life - a hopeless attitude steps back in despair and takes its eyes off of the providence of Christ and focusses rather on the need. Sadly, a hopeless outlook will never enjoy the fruit of God’s character building in our lives, because hopelessness does not rejoice in challenge. Hopelessness throws its hands in the air and gives up when things get tough. The scriptures tell us that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And Christ’s hope will never disappoint us, because God loves us enough to take us through calamity and into his wonderful plans for our future, by his Holy Spirit.

 

Whatever emptiness you think your future may hold; whatever difficulty you’re facing today or whatever loss you’ve endured in the past, I say to you never, never give up only look up! God’s word has endured for millennia and you hold that word right there in your hands. The Bible is crammed with God’s promises to you. Listen: God shall provide all your needs; the Lord is your Shepherd through the valley of the shadow of death; when you walk through the waters you shall not drown and when you walk through the fire you shall not burn; by his wounds you are healed; he has removed your sins from you as far as east is from west; God knows the plans he has to give you a hope and a future. And all of God’s promises are yes in Christ. So, if you are “in Christ” then you are in the same place as God’s promises! Don’t allow hopelessness to bring your future into disrepair; live every day in the hope of God’s newness and blessings. He who promised is faithful and he will do it!

 

God-tracking is remaining hopeful in spite of hopeless prospects.

Dear God-tracker 

God-tracking is nurturing in the vision he has given YOU, despite seeming failures 

I have a lovely white orchid plant growing in a pot on my bathroom windowsill. It is a very rewarding site and fills the room with cheer. At the moment it’s boasting 33 blossoms but it’s not always been this prolific. When I bought the plant it had four or five flowers in bloom but after they died off it stood dormant for a very long time. I faithfully watered its roots and moistened its leaves but to no avail. But then one winter I began to notice little buds appearing between its leaves. These buds grew and grew until two longs stems produced the display I’m now enjoying so much. I must admit that there were times that I thought I should just get rid of the orchid but, thankfully, I persevered in my nurture until I was rewarded for my faithfulness. 

Another story is told of young William Wilberforce who was most discouraged one night in the early 1790s after another defeat in his 10 year battle against the slave trade in England. Tired and frustrated, he opened his Bible to read. As he did a small piece of paper dropped out. It was a letter written by his friend John Wesley shortly before his death. Wilberforce read it again: "Unless God has raised you up for this very thing, you will be worn out by the opposition of men and devils. But if God be for you, who can be against you? Are all of them together stronger than God? Oh, be not weary of well-doing. Go on in the name of God, and in the power of His might."  

Two accounts of endurance (though I’ll admit the latter is a little more honourable than the first). However, in both the cases above it was the nurture of a vision that produced the fruit. If I had given up watering my favourite flower then it would have died off and never produced the reward it now gives. If Wilberforce had given up plying parliament to abolish slavery then we’d be living in a very different world today. Faithful endurance continues to water the vision and watches as God produces the fruit, as only he alone can do.
