But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

One of the fruits of the Spirit is kindness. Kindness is defined as, the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Along with the other eight fruits of the Spirit, true kindness is imputed by the power of the Holy Spirit in a life totally sold out to Jesus.

Aisha was raised in a good home. Her parents are Hindus, therefore believed in many gods, including the Lord God Almighty. However, Aisha was brought up with no understanding of who Jesus Christ is. When she reached her teens, Aisha rebelled. She became a very withdrawn and angry person. She trusted no one and was very cynical. However, one girl in her high school class was able to break through her hard shell. Abi knew Jesus as her personal Lord and saviour and extruded the love of God. She showed unconditional kindness to Aisha, despite her aggressive behaviour.

“I could not understand why she was so kind to me,” said Aisha. “She would always sit with me at lunchtime, often not saying a word – just near to me. She would buy me drinks and pastries from the canteen. And when I was in a mood, she would just listen to me rant. I did not deserve Abi’s kindness.” Abi’s kindness eventually softened Aisha’s hardened heart. She was able to share the love of God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus, with Aisha. Aisha surrendered her heart to Christ.

The quality of being friendly, generous and considerate, kindness can shatter the hardest of hearts. Kindness is self-sacrificing. Kindness, the least appreciated of all noble traits, is the greatest of humane qualities because, kindness acts out love. God was so kind to you and me, though we did not deserve it, he sent Jesus to heal us of our rebellion. Only by his generous and considerate outpouring of the Holy Spirit into our lives can we extrude the same kindness shown by young Abi.

I pray that I will be a greater witness to the kindness that you have shown me

“Lord, my Lord, I’m sorry if I have hardened my heart to the needs of others. I submit now to the outworking of your Holy Spirit in my life. I ask that you manifest the fruit of the Spirit in me, especially the fruit of kindness. Help me to notice the needs of those around me. Help me to be friendly, generous and considerate. Use me to soften the hearts of other people who are suffering the anguish of scepticism and cynicism. I pray that I will be a greater witness to the kindness that you have shown me. Amen.”

God-tracking is all about seeking and remaining on track with the plans God knows he has for us. One of my life verses, Jeremiah 20 verse 11, tells us just that. That is, it is God who knows the plans he has for us but we don’t.

God has many names in the Bible. We see the character of God depicted in his names. One of these names is the Ancient of Days. This name implies that God is eternal (one of the biblical references to the infinity of God). Three words that describe God are: omnipotent (which means all-powerful), omnipresent (which means ever-present) and omniscient (which means all-knowing). There is no entity in the universe like the Lord God. He is the Creator of all matter, time and space. El Shaddai, another name for God, means God Almighty. Ancient of Days is the Lord God Almighty who was and who is and who is to come; the all-knowing, all-powerful and ever-present creator of you.

“I know the plans I have for you,” says Ancient of Days. He has done wonderful things. His faithful and sure plans for you were formed of old. Whatever conflict or contention you may be facing today, be sure his plans for you were designed long ago. He knew you before you were born. Your days were written in his book before your first breath. When he speaks, no one can stand against him; he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world! You can trust his discretion. You can trust his plans. He will keep you in perfect peace if you keep your mind on him. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord your God is an everlasting rock.

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land

If you asked my wife, Karen she would confirm that I’m a true nostalgist. I don’t take lightly to change. I tend to hanker after the “good ol’ days”. Now, there’s nothing wrong in remembering the good times in life when you enjoyed God’s blessings. I have many very good memories. However, life does not stand still. People change and circumstances change. And when God says, “I know the plans I have for you,” you can be sure God’s plans are positive and progressive.

Of all the plans God knows he has for you, the most important plan he has is for your sanctification. Sanctification is the process of holiness. In other words, sanctification is the process you and I undergo to become more Christlike or holy. We are exhorted to be holy as God is holy.

When you asked Jesus into your heart you were spiritually transformed; born again. That is, your old sinful nature died. You became a new creation and received new life through Christ. At this point you were imputed with God’s righteousness. But this is a spiritual process – it occurs in your spirit man. Your soul (mind, personality and character) and your flesh (body) are still subject to the world around you. It’s in these two parts of your person where sanctification occurs. And change is inevitable for the process of sanctification.

Therefore, be encouraged to move forward with the plans God knows he has for you. Continue to progress in your God-tracking without looking back. God’s plans are for your welfare, to give you a future filled with hope. And when you fail (as I do – often) come before Abba Father in repentance for any wrong, seek his forgiveness and correction and then press on. This is the process of sanctification that God has designed for you. God is a reasonable person. He says to you today, “Come let us reason together. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.”

God’s mercies are new every morning. Remember, as the old song says, every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before.

Therefore, I claim that you have made me spiritually righteous by the blood of Jesus. But, dear Lord, in the flesh still I fail. Forgive me for my sin. Help me to let go of old wrong ways that I may lay hold of your new goodness. I reason with you, today. Help me to progress in my sanctification to be holy as you are holy. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

St. Francis de Sales said, “Some men become proud and insolent because they ride a fine horse, wear a feather in their hat or are dressed in a fine suit of clothes. Who does not see the folly of this? If there be any glory in such things, the glory belongs to the horse, the bird and the tailor.” We all strive for the glory of God in our lives. And, indeed, God’s glory is something well worth striving for. However, the key to my experience of God’s glory is found in completely retreating from my own importance.

I have been seeking to experience more of the glory of God. I have a yearning to see his presence manifest more and more in my life. I have found that the manifest glory of God is found in a total submission to his holiness. God is holy. Holiness means consecrated, sanctified and unique. God is absolutely unique: there is nothing like God – his splendour, his righteousness, his majesty – in the whole universe! When people enter the glory of God, they are challenged by his holiness.

The prophet Isaiah experienced the glory of God. He describes it like this: “I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” Then he says the temple shook with God’s majesty and the house was filled with smoke (smoke or clouds are often evidence of the glory of God). Then notice Isaiah’s response: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Do you desire to experience more of God’s glory in your life? I do. Do you have a longing to come under the influence of his Holy Spirit and dwell in his holy presence? I do. As I do, do you have a passion to reveal God’s grandeur in all you do, living under the cloud of his glory at your time of need? If so, then let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith and our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience. May we not strut about like peacocks, flaunting our feathers for the world to see but may we humbly remember the glory is the Lord’s.

“On Friday Jesus laboured to pay the price for your sin. As Saturday dawned, he himself became your Sabbath rest.”

Hebrews 4:1

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.

Jesus had been arrested in the early hours of Friday morning. He was hastily tried and convicted on false charges of blasphemy. Taken away he was crucified before the advent of the day of rest. Being a public figure, his crucifixion was particularly savage. This holy man, who had never committed any sin, let alone a vicious crime, was executed in the most violent way. He was flogged to within inches of death, his back ripped apart by the bits of bone and metal tied to whips of leather. The soldiers and spectators alike beat him with fists and clubs as he carried his cross to the Place of the Skull. They spat on him and insulted him. Finally, he was laid out on the hard wood of the cross as spikes were driven through his hands and feet into the wood beneath. Lifting the cross high they maliciously dropped it into a hole, ripping ligaments and tearing flesh in the process. There the Son of God, righteous and pure, hung until he died. The work of the cross and the labour of baring the consequence of sin was completed with the cry, “It is finished!”

A few hours later, the soldiers broke the legs of the other two convicts crucified with Jesus so that they would die before sunset. But Jesus was already dead. In the final minutes before the Sabbath began, the body of Jesus was removed, dressed and laid in a tomb. A strange calm descended over the landscape. It was as if the great toil of time had been completed. The work was finished. Jesus was dead and his body rested in the tomb. The Sabbath had come.

Dear friend, when Jesus died for you and for me, he laboured in love to carry the weight of sin. The good work of the cross was an enormous exertion. When he died, Christ completed not only the work of the Law of God but also fulfilled the consequence of disobedience. On Friday Jesus laboured to pay the price for your sin. As Saturday dawned, he himself became your Sabbath rest.

If you are weary and burdened, come to Jesus and he will give you rest. Jesus has already paid for your sin; he has already fulfilled the legal requirements of the Law of God and borne the punishment of disobedience. Accept the work of the cross as done on your behalf and then, by faith, rest in his grace and forgiveness.

Lord, I admit that I have been trying to earn your favour by my good works, but this is futile. My works will never be good enough to earn your favour.  Only Jesus could be good enough for you and only by Jesus’ good work on the cross can I know forgiveness from all sin and rest for my soul. Thank you, dear Lord. I come to rest in you today. I’m weary of strife, Lord. I receive your grace and forgiveness as I ask you to be my Lord. Thank you for my rest. Amen.”

During the Covid-19 lockdown, Karen and I were together practically 24 hours per day. Thankfully, my marriage is sound and I thoroughly enjoy my wife’s company. However, although we were together in the same house all day long, I was not perpetually aware of Karen’s presence. Although Karen was continually in my company at the time, her presence was not manifest unless she chose to interact with me. The same concept applies to our experience of the presence of God.

 I try to have a time of prayer and Bible reading every morning. Most times, I enjoy simply praying through issues and studying God’s word. I know the Lord is always with me and I sense his presence in the room as I would if Karen walked through the door. But for the most part, the Spirit of the Lord does not physically interact with me. However, there are times, like yesterday morning, when the Lord literally touches my spirit.

I was sitting quietly for a moment thinking about a problem I was facing when my phone buzzed. I looked and it was a WhatsApp message from a person I hardly know, with an audio file attached. It was a recording of In Christ Alone, a great hymn I’ve sung many times. I was about to turn my phone off when I felt the prompting of the Holy Spirit to listen. It was not a very inspiring arrangement of an a-cappella choral production. Yet, from the first line, the Holy Spirit came upon me. My knees became weak and tears flowed (as they always do when the Lord touches me). My Lord, who was continually in the room with me, chose that very moment to interact with me. God’s omnipresence became his manifest presence at my time of need.

Jesus loves you so much. He will never leave you or forsake you. You can never escape God’s continual presence. However, though you may not feel his presence 24/7, his omnipresence will become his manifest presence at the time you need it most. Trust him.

Lord, help me to be more aware of your presence every day

“O my Lord, I know you are always with me. I know I can never be free of your continual presence, and I take comfort in that. “The zeal – fervour, passion, enthusiasm – of the Lord comes by God’s oil in your lamp. God’s oil is the Holy Spirit. Submit to his power and presence now and rest in the strength, the passion, the enthusiasm that only he can endow. The zeal of the Lord to do it!”

Way back when I was in my church youth group, we loved to sing an old popular song around a campfire. It went, “Give me oil in my lamp keep me burning, burning, burning.” It was one of great those old songs you could add your own verses to. I remember singing, “Give me wheels on my Ford keep me driving for the Lord,” and  “Give me wax on my board keep me surfing for the Lord,” (not that I was a surfer, you understand). But the verse we added that I loved the most went, “Give me unction in my gumption keep me functioning, functioning, functioning… keep me functioning till the break of day! Sing hosanna!”

There are days when I wake up with a lack of unction. There are days that I wake up with less than my fair measure of gumption. You know what I’m talking about, those days when you lack any motivation to simply get up and get going, for whatever reason. It’s on days like this that I need some of the Holy Spirit’s oil in my lamp to keep me burning.

Isaiah prophesied the destruction of Israel and Judah. He said, because of their rebellion, the enemies of God’s people would overwhelm Zion. However, a remnant true to God would remain in Zion. Then he said, “The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.” It was only by God’s fervour and the oil of the Holy Spirit that the remnant would have the unction in their gumption to keep functioning.

In whatever mood you woke up today; whatever has demotivated you or stripped you of your enthusiasm to get out there and go for it, I say to you, only the zeal of the Lord will give you the motivation to do it. The zeal – fervour, passion, enthusiasm – of the Lord comes by God’s oil in your lamp. God’s oil is the Holy Spirit. Submit to his power and presence now and rest in the fervour, the passion, the enthusiasm that only he can endow. The zeal of the Lord to do it!

I acknowledge you in all my ways and rest in the zeal of the Holy Spirit

“Dear Lord. I often feel unmotivated and uninspired to get out there and go for it. Forgive me for wallowing in my self-pity. I choose now to not give up but look up – to lift my head and look up into the face of Jesus. I trust you to inspire me to serve you.
