Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is chasing away the blues

A while back I produced a 30 second radio spot for a local radio station called, The Blues Breaker. The spot was designed to chase away the blues of those who felt down in the mouth on a Monday morning. One of these 30 second Blues Breakers went like this: “A Psalmist who had the blues once said, ‘Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?’ Sound familiar? Well this guy went on to say, ‘Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.’ ”

What has come to be known as the blues is a melancholic style of music with an African American folk origin, typically in a twelve-bar sequence. It developed in the rural slave communities of southern USA towards the end of the 19th century. Folk were forced to work the cotton fields in despair and dejection, longing back to families in their homelands from where they were stolen by the slave trade. Understandably, this music was originally sad and depressive. However, today this style of music has developed into a legitimate genre known as rhythm and blues. I’ve heard it said that the music of the psalms is packed with “the blues”.  We read one instance of this above where the Sons of Korah wailed to God that their souls were downcast. Yet, there is always expectation in the psalms of the blues as when we read that our God is always our hope!

So, if you’re feeling a little down in the mouth today, allow this psalm to lift up your head and chase away those blues: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Now, ain’t that good news?!

GOD-TRACKING IS A SYMPHONY OF PRAISE UNDER THE BATON OF THE GREAT CONDUCTOR

Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is a symphony of praise under the baton of the great Conductor

I remember day trips to symphony hall with school when I was a child. I loved listening to the music but mostly I loved watching the full symphony orchestra playing together. Dozens of musicians – brass, strings, percussion, wind – all playing as one. It seemed to my young mind as if they were all connected by a long invisible string that moved their hands in complete unison. Then there was the guy up front with the wild hairstyle that waved a little stick around. The whole orchestra seemed completely mesmerized by his dance while the invisible string coming from his baton seemed to flutter their fingers upon their instruments, producing a vast array of sweet sounds. They all seemed to all be working together for the good of performing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Now, many years later I still do love symphony music but at least I know now that the conductor does not have an invisible string connected to each musician. And yet, I am still amazed at how every instrument works together with the other to produce beautiful music under his direction. It reminds me of our walk with God. The scriptures tell us that all things work together for the good of those who love and serve Jesus. They also tell us that we are God’s workmanship created to do good works. Your life is an orchestra comprised of many instruments that, in the hands of the Creator Conductor, will create marvelously melodious music. Every circumstance, every situation, every relationship and every activity you do, as acknowledging the Lord in it all, will work together symphonically for your good and his glory.

So, if you’re finding yourself facing an inharmonic situation today then take your eyes off the musician to your left or right and fix them on Jesus, the great Conductor. Jesus is the author and perfector of your life. He knows all you’re going through and is already in your tomorrow meeting your every need. If you will allow him to conduct your life with his invisible strings, causing every detail to play in tune with his will, then he will turn your life into a masterpiece of his composition.

So, listen for his pitch and keep your eye on the Conductor through all the seasons of your life. Do this and I know that your Lord will turn your life into a great symphony of his praise.

God-tracking is a symphony of praise under the baton of the great Conductor.

Every blessing

GOD-TRACKING IS BEING MALLEABLE IN THE HANDS OF THE BLACKSMITH OF HEAVEN

26 September 2014

Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is being MALLEABLE in the hands of the Blacksmith of Heaven

I was tapping away at my computer, minding my own business when the phone rang.  “Hello. This is Dudley Anderson.”

“Hi Dudley, it’s Barbara,” said the voice on the other end. “Hi Barbara, how are you?”

“Fine. Dudley, I was just praying and the Holy Spirit gave me an impression of a blacksmith, hammering away at steel on his anvil. As he hammered, sparks were flying everywhere. I feel this is a word for the church. God is shaping us.”

We chatted a little more and then said good bye then I hung up the phone, thinking about what she had said. As I returned to working on my laptop I began to have a feeling that the Holy Spirit was drawing me to pray so I walked down stairs and sat in my prayer-chair in the lounge and opened my heart to the Lord. In little less than one minute I found myself on my knees calling out to God for wisdom and insight. Then it was as if I felt the Spirit tug at the sleeve of my spirit and I literally turned my head to hear the word, “resilience” in my heart.  “Resilience? What do you mean by resilience, Lord?” I said. I had a notion that it had to do with a negative interpretation of the word so I rebuked “resilience” in Jesus’ name.

After I felt I had come through in prayer I returned to my computer and looked up the word resilience. I found it to mean: “The physical property of a material to return to its original shape or position after deformation that does not exceed its elastic limit.  Hmmm, to return to its original shape, I mused out loud.

In Isaiah we read, “We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hands,” and in Jeremiah, “But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” Here the analogy has to with how a potter forms and reforms clay into the shape he requires it to be. However, in order for the clay to be shaped it needs to be malleable and nor resilient! Imagine if a lump of clay bounced back to being just a lump of clay after it was shaped into a lovely vase. Likewise, hard steel in the hand of a skilled blacksmith is malleable and not resilient. If these materials were resilient then they would always bounce back to their original shape and be useless to anybody.

The Lord may be doing a new thing in your life. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is calling you to bend; to break; to be beaten and molded by his Word and his Spirit. He may be enlarging you and reshaping you; stretching you out of your original shape for his purposes. Take courage, and allow God to enlarge your boundaries. When God bends you try not to be elastic and return to your previous state, rather allow him to stretch you to new heights. He is calling us all to be malleable, pliable and workable in order to be transformed into the image of Jesus so that we will all reflect his glory. It could be that God is deforming your old nature that you may conform to his new nature for you. Refuse to allow yourself to be elastically restored to your old state of rigid notions and religious norms. God’s ways are higher than your ways and his ways are always for you are good, even when it seems the sparks begin to fly!

Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is stomping on the snakes and scorpions in your life

In Bible times people did not have the luxury of motorised transport or railway systems in order to travel from one location to another. The only modes of transport they used to travel cross county were camels, horses, donkeys and their feet. The Judean terrain was very unforgiving. Roads were little more than rocky and dusty pathways infested with scorpions and snakes. The average traveller travelled by foot – feet clad with nothing more than open sandals. I’m sure there must have been many a time when travellers were stung by scorpions or bitten by snakes. These were the very real hazards faced by any traveller in biblical times.

When the 72 disciples returned after Jesus had commissioned them for a short missions trip (which they undertook by foot, I might add) they were so excited to tell of how even demons obeyed the authority of Jesus’ name. Jesus explained that he had witnessed how Satan was cast from heaven after his rebellion against God. He then went on to say, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Jesus knew that they would well understand this analogy as referring to their authority over Satan and his hordes by their experience of trekking the scorpion and snake infested pathways of the desert in open sandals.

As you track the plans of God, dear friend, you will often find yourself walking along demon infested avenues. The Bible says that the devil is waiting to devour us at every turn. But take heart, Jesus has given you authority to trample on these scorpions and serpents. He has given you authority, in his name, to overcome all the power of the enemy. And the enemy’s power is nothing more than lies; lies about your health, your finances, your future, and your relationships. So believe the truth of God’s word when it says that if you acknowledge the Lord in all your ways he will direct all your paths. So walk boldly in the victory that Christ has given you by the power of his name, as you track God’s paths for your life. And when those snakes and scorpions try to attack your feet, trample on them with all authority! Remember believer, the One in you is a thousand times greater than the one in the world!

God-tracking is stomping on the snakes and scorpions in your life

Blessings

God-tracking is not a religious rite; it’s a stress-free walk of faith

Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is not a religious rite; it’s a stress-free walk of faith

Studies have shown that the hippocampus of one’s brain, which is responsible for short-term memory, shrinks when one is under stress. In other words, the more stressed you become the more forgetful you become. Further studies have shown that religious people tend to have short-term memory lapses indicating that their hippocampi have become reduced. The researchers put this down to the stresses involved in following the precepts of religious compliance. They say that religious people open themselves to added stresses as a result of the effort of trying to follow religious rites and regulations.

Sadly, many folk who call themselves practicing Christians think of themselves as religious people. As Christians we do follow the precepts of our scriptures, however, true Christianity is not a religion per se, but a relationship. The essence of salvation for a Christian is not religious works but a submissive faith in God’s grace; and grace is God’s doing. The Lord God we worship, produced the means himself to redeem us from sin after the fall of mankind. He did this by sending Jesus, his righteous son, to die for sin in our place (because the wages of sin is death) and then, by his resurrection, to create a way for us to be forgiven of all sin. Jesus became sin so that, in him, I might become God’s righteousness. The Law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set us free from the requirements of dead religious precepts. And all this is God’s grace – God’s doing! Faith is simply admitting that we don’t have what it takes to work for our salvation by any religious observance, or otherwise, and simply putting our confidence in the work of Jesus through the cross. It’s that easy!

Religion can be stressful but true Christianity is not stressful. Religious duties and procedures can be stressful but simple faith in God’s grace is anything but stressful. Trying to deal with sin and infirmity by our own effort can be really stressful but walking in repentance and by God’s grace is not stressful. In fact, faith is the easiest thing in the world, because faith is admitting that I can’t while God can! This is why Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest,” and “my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Religion is bearing up under the yoke of rituals, regulations and good works while true faith is simply tracking your life track, arm in arm with Jesus.

God-tracking is not a religious rite; it’s a stress-free walk of faith

Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is a life seasoned with the POWER OF Holy Spirit

I remember my first attempt at cooking a curry. Before I go any further, one thing you need to understand is, I’m no cook! Yet, with the council and direction of my talented wife, I once boldly attempted to cook up a dish fit for the Raj of India. The ingredients: sunflower oil, beef braising steak, onions, chopped tomatoes, garlic cloves, chillies, fresh root ginger, cumin, coriander, turmeric, garam masala, natural yoghurt and a handful freshly chopped coriander. Hmmm. I dare say it turned out quite okay.

I fully understand that not everyone who reads this may be a lover of Indian cuisine. However, I’m sure you’ll agree that most of the ingredients listed above would make for a very fragrant and seasoned dish. Garlic, chillies, cumin, coriander along with the others have strong flavours and certainly influence the dish to produce its distinctive curry flavour. However, if I were to remove these distinct ingredients I’d be left with sunflower oil, beef braising steak, onions and chopped tomatoes. If I cooked only these components of the recipe my splendid curry would end up nothing more than an average stew.

As we track the highways and byways of Christian living we often find ourselves in situations that test the flavour of our faith. The scripture tells us to make the most of every opportunity by allowing our interaction with the world to be seasoned as with salt. It also says that we are the salt of the earth, which means that we reveal the flavour of God to the world around us. In my own strength I would find it impossible to reveal God’s grace and power to my world but when I allow my witness be seasoned with the power of God’s Holy Spirit I become salt and light in a decaying and dark world. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would give us the words we need to speak when we’re put on the spot. Therefore, make sure your conversation is seasoned with the conscious presence of the Holy Spirit every time you find yourself in a position of conflict or are called upon to share your faith in this world. Only his power and grace will turn your humdrum stew into a fragrant curry.

God-tracking is a life seasoned with the power of the Holy Spirit
