I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

While Jehoshaphat was king of Judah the Moabites and Ammonites waged war against him. This was a vast army intent on annihilating God’s people. Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord and proclaimed a fast for all Judah. The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord. God’s word came to Jehoshaphat through the priest and prophet Jahaziel: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” After talking with the people, Jehoshaphat called for praise and worship. Together they sang, “Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.” As they began to praise God, the Lord set ambushes against the enemy and it was defeated.

Your battle is the Lord’s! Listen, “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you,” and “If God is for us, who can be against us?” The enemies of peace and security will rise. It’s a fact. However, the force behind these forces of man is Satan. The Scriptures tell us that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. But we know that Jesus, our champion and commander in chief, personally overcame these authorities at Calvary when he made a public spectacle of them by triumphing over them through the cross. Halleluiah!

So, today, whatever war you’re facing, whatever forces are battling in the world, let us look to Jesus, our victor. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. Don’t fret when people carry out their wicked schemes. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. Praise and worship God in the face of the onslaught. Our God is high and exalted. He is our sovereign Majesty. His character is supreme, his power unlimited and his will, paramount. At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow! The name of the Lord is a strong tower. Run and Never Look Back

But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

“I was winning the race,” said Rosemarie as she bragged about being an ace athlete at school. “It was the 200m. I was in the third lane and was making good ground. My arch opponent was in the second lane and gaining on me. As I ran, I turned my head and looked behind me to see how far ahead I was. Unwittingly, as I looked back, I drifted over into lane two,” said Rosemarie. “I won the race but was disqualified for changing lanes. If I had not looked back, I would have been champion.”

Jesus said, “No one, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” He was answering disciples who said they would follow him anywhere. They knew that, when ploughing a field, the farmer sets his gaze on a spot on the far side of the field, without looking back at the ploughed furrows. If he shifts his focus and looks back, he will create a small kink in the furrow he is ploughing. He might not even notice the kink until he completes ploughing the field. Then he’ll notice that small kink has become amplified by every pass until it became a large wave in the ploughed furrows upon completion.

Tracking the Christian life is like running a race or ploughing a field. We need to set our gaze on Jesus, the author of our lives, without looking back. If we take our eyes off Jesus, we will cause a kink in our Christian track that will eventually become amplified throughout life until we change lanes and become disqualified. Be encouraged to fix your eyes on Jesus and run in such a way as to obtain the prize.

but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct

St. Francis de Sales said, “Some men become proud and insolent because they ride a fine horse, wear a feather in their hat or are dressed in a fine suit of clothes. Who does not see the folly of this? If there be any glory in such things, surely the glory belongs to the horse, the bird and the tailor.” We all strive for the glory of God in our lives. And, indeed, God’s glory is something well worth striving for. However, the key to my experience of God’s glory is not found in my presentation but in his presence and a retreat from my significance.

The manifest glory of God is found in total submission to his holiness. God is holy. The word holy means consecrated, sanctified and unique. God is supremely unique: there is nothing like God – his splendour, righteousness, majesty – in all the universe! When people enter the glory of God, they will experience his holiness. And God’s holiness greatly challenges their fallen state.

The prophet Isaiah experienced the glory of God. He describes it like this: “I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.” (This robe was the glory of God.) “Above him stood the seraphim. And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!’” Then he says the temple shook at the revelation of God’s majesty and the house was filled with smoke. Smoke or clouds are often evidence of the glory of God. Then notice Isaiah’s response: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Do you desire to experience more of God’s glory? I do. Do you have a yearning to come under the influence of his Holy Spirit and dwell in his temple? I do. Do you have a passion to reveal God’s majesty in your life? I do. If this is true then let us admit to our sin and confess it to God, as Isaiah did. Let’s submit to God’s majesty allowing our lips to be touched by the fire of his holiness, drawing near to his throne by the blood of Jesus. May we not strut about like the insolent man on his fine horse. Rather, may we set our eyes on Jesus, seeking his glory and being holy as he is holy.

Don’t Give Up, Get Back Up

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms;

I remember the days when the big circus came to town. The marquee would be erected in the centre of a field, flags and banners and colourful lights adorned. Around the marquee were temporary stables housing horses and donkeys. Swaggering about around the entrance, clowns laughed and joked, entertaining the crowd waiting to enter. But of all the paraphernalia of the circus that fascinated me, it was the high lines and swings of the trapeze act that intrigued me most. I would sit through the show in anticipation of the dexterous high-flying act of the trapeze, usually kept for the grand finale.

We gasp at near-misses, cheer at nimble catches. Higher, faster, swinging from side-to-side meters from the circus ring. Then… a miss… a fall! The crowd gasps and squeals. Yet, underneath is a net. The artist falls into the net, safe and secure, to the relief of everyone in the audience. Then he climbs back up to his swing and continues the act.

The Christian life is like living on a trapeze. The world watches us as we perform life, waiting, and sometimes hoping, for a fall. And when we fall, they watch with glee to see how we recover. Yet, when we slip there is surely a net to catch us in our fall. That net is grace. God’s grace. Grace is God’s doing and God did it when he sent Jesus to die in our place and reconcile us to his goodness. In faith, we grab that swing and fly through life, on show to the world. And when we fall – and fall we will – God’s loving arms are beneath to catch us. His grace is all we need. His grace is sufficient, for when we are weak in our performance, he is strong enough to catch us.

Be encouraged to keep swinging! Don’t give up because you’ve had a fall. Jesus loves you and his Spirit dwells in you. Underneath are his everlasting arms. He will never forsake you. When the world gloats over your fall, take courage that he will catch you by his grace. Then, in faith, rise and climb back up to that swing.

“Oh Lord, I’ve had a fall, again. I admit to my sin and my reckless mistakes. Please forgive me for taking my eyes off you. Thank you so much for your grace that is always there to catch me when I fall. I choose now to rise and, in faith, to climb back up to the place where I was before my fall. Thank you for your loving grace and mercy. Thank you for your faithful forgiveness. Help me to again soar on wings like an eagle. Thank you, Lord. Amen.

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

I have been writing the email devotional GodTracker for more than 19 years. What a privilege to share some thoughts of inspiration and motivation to help us seek and track the plans of God for our lives. God’s plans are promising, full of purpose and a blessing. Sometimes, however, we become so consumed with following God’s auspicious plans for our lives that we take our eyes off the Planner.

Watching social media and listening to the myriad teachings, comments and posts we’re bombarded with every day, I’m becoming more and more aware that much is being said about how we are to behave and live as Christians. We’re encouraged to preach the gospel, heal the sick, love our neighbour, seek happiness and peace. We’re instructed how to sing and worship, how to preach, how to serve the poor and how to stand up for righteousness. Don’t get me wrong, these are all excellent concepts, sure and true. Indeed, we need to know how to live and behave as followers of Christ. However, I haven’t seen many posts lately about the simplicity of simply seeking the face of Jesus and discovering the tremendous character of God; seeking his presence and simply seeking God for who he is.

May we fix our eyes only on Jesus. Let’s be mindful of Father God, setting our minds on things above, where Jesus is enthroned at God’s right hand. Our God is awesome in power; he is mighty in his splendour and holiness. He is the reason we exist. His love was demonstrated to us through the cross of Christ. Jesus, God incarnate, holy and pure, bore our sins when he died at Calvary. When he rose from the dead, he opened the way for you and me to boldly approach the majesty of God Almighty, in love and worship.

So, let us put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created us and purposefully seek his imminent presence in our lives, above all else. May we live for his glory, seeking first his kingdom and his righteousness.

You are God’s Masterpiece

“You are God’s masterpiece – his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that you should walk in them.”

Psalm 138:8
The Lord will fulfil his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures for ever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

God-tracking has as its central premise, seeking and tracking the purposes of God. The scriptures make it plain that God has a plan for each of our lives; a plan for our shalom, that is, our welfare, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity and peace. We also read in the Bible that his eyes saw us in the womb and he scribed every one of our days before we were born. Our God is all-knowing and all-powerful and his purposes endure.

Every new day, every new year is found in his book of your life. He knows the plans he has for you. You are God’s masterpiece – his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that you should walk in them. He will fulfil his purposes for you and e won’t forsake the work of his hands.

However, our God is a gentleman. He never forces his will on any man. We see evidence of this right in the beginning in Eden when he gave Adam and Eve the free will to choose to follow or reject his will. Sadly, they rejected God’s plans and fell from his holiness. Today, the Lord wants you to set your heart on doing his will and following the plans, he knows he has for you. Acknowledge the Lord in all your ways – all your ways – and trust him to work out his purposes in your life. Do this and the Lord will fulfil his plans for you.

Purity of Heart Precedes Purity of Hand

“I believe that God looks at the heart and not the hands. In other words, I believe that salvation is realised in the heart before it plays out through the hands.”

Romans 10:10
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation

One of my favourite heroes of the faith is the king of Israel, King David. I love David because he was an average guy with average problems who discovered the secret of faithfully keeping his heart pure before God.

David was the youngest son of an average Hebrew guy called, Jesse and a shepherd of his father’s sheep.  Being a shepherd in the Middle East was a very humble job. Nevertheless, we read how David did his job to the best of his ability, even risking his life for the sheep. However, David was soon to become the shepherd of Israel as the greatest king his people would ever know.

As we read David’s story, we notice that he was less than a perfect guy. Becoming a great warrior-king meant that he would be responsible for the deaths of many people through the acts of war. Also, on one occasion we read that David fell in love with another man’s wife and married her, after sending her husband to his death on the front line. David committed adultery and murder! Yet, we also read that David was called, “A man after God’s own heart.” In fact, it is from David’s lineage that we received the Messiah and saviour of the world. Thankfully, David came to repentance for his sins, which in itself, proves his heart. The acts of David’s hands may have been dubious but his heart was right before God.

I believe that God looks at the heart and not the hands. In other words, I believe that salvation is realised in the heart before it plays out through the hands. Faith and grace are qualities experienced in the heart as we believe Jesus died and rose again to free us from sin. However, Jesus said that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak. Consequently, although we are justified by faith in the heart, our hands (or mouths, as the case may be) act out our salvation by confession.

King David was not a perfect guy but his heart was right and he knew the power of repentance. David knew that he was nothing, had nothing and meant nothing but for the grace of God. David was made righteous by faith in God’s forgiveness but walked in the integrity of his salvation. He knew that purity of heart precedes purity of hand.

God-tracking is firstly getting your heart right with God.
