Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.

Do you ever feel like you’re slogging away at life with seemingly no return? Get up in the morning, eat breakfast, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed, get up in the morning… It’s like you’re casting your bread upon the water never to see it again. Or will you?

That expression comes from the Bible. We read it in the book of Ecclesiastes, which is a book about the seeming futility of life. It was penned by King Solomon, the son of King David. Solomon asked God for wisdom and was blessed to become the wealthiest king in Israel’s history. Yet he wrote, “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?” However, Solomon also wrote, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” To finish quoting that expression above, the scripture says, “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.”

God has not called you to be more than you are, he has called you to be all that you are. And we are all called to all the world. Whatever you do in life – at work, in your relationships, in your pastimes – do it with all your might, as unto Jesus. We are told that all we do in life needs to be done in the name of Jesus. In the Lord, our labour is never in vain.

So go for it! Give it your all, even when it feels like you’re slogging away the old sausage machine, churning out sausage after sausage with no return. Do it for Jesus, at work, at home and in church. He is your exceeding great reward. Cast your bread upon the waters in faith that you will find it again after many days.

God-tracking is working for Jesus.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

“Help me to see a return for my toil but even if I don’t, help me to do it with all my might.”

“My God, I get so fatigued doing the same old after the same old, every day. Sometimes I feel like I’m making no ground; like I’m slogging away without return. But I know now that all I do in life – especially my work – is to be done for you and in the name of Jesus. So, I change my thinking and choose to dedicate my work and my relationships to you. Become a Fisher of Men

They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

Peter and his brother Andrew were at the edge of Lake Tiberius pulling in their nets after a morning of fishing. They had inherited their business from their father, a fishing business that had, no doubt, been in their family for many years. They had made a good catch that day and were looking forward to setting up their stall on the banks of the lake to sell their product. It was then that Jesus of Nazareth passed by. They had heard that this man was a great teacher and miracle worker but had no ambition of getting involved in his ministry. Jesus, pausing on the bank and squinting in the sunlight at these two burly fishermen as they wound in their nets, called out, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

Indeed, Jesus was gaining a reputation as a great rabbi. These men gave up much to follow him. They progressed to become great men of influence as they took the message of Christ far and wide after Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension. However, at the point of their calling, they had no idea what the future held. They simply believed in Jesus and his call on their lives to go and make disciples. God had a plan for these guys, a plan for them to become fishers of men with the promise that he would be with them always, even to the end of the age.

Perhaps you’ve heard the call of Jesus, “Follow me, and I will make you a fisher of men.” But perhaps you’re unsure of where he will lead you. It could be that he is calling you to give up much to follow his lead. As Peter and Andrew gave up their business to follow Jesus, it may be that the Lord is calling you to do the same. Whatever you feel God is saying, wherever it could be that you believe he is calling you, understand this, he will replace your catch of fish with a catch far greater than you could ever imagine. God has a plan for you to become a fisher of men with the promise that he will be with you always, even to the end of the age.

God-tracking is giving it up to follow Jesus.

Fly Straight and True

“God’s purpose for you is unique. No one else can fulfil the plan he has for you. So, wait patiently for him to drive you straight and true.”

Ephesians 1:11
In him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.

This devotional is called GodTracker. This title describes the primary purpose of every Christian
believer: tracking the plans and purposes of God. Scripture makes it plain; God has a plan and a purpose for each one of us. Yet, God’s ways are not our ways and our ways are not God’s ways.

A Scotchman was demonstrating the new game of golf to President Ulysses Grant. He carefully placed the ball on the tee and took a mighty swing. The club hit the turf and scattered dirt all over the President's beard and clothes, while the ball placidly sat on the tee. Again and again, the Scotchman swung, and again he missed. The President waited patiently through six tries and then quietly said, "There seems to be a fair amount of exercise in the game, but I fail to see the purpose of the ball.”

We smile but the truth is, the ball had a purpose. Its purpose was to fly straight and true to the green to be putted into the cup. Unfortunately, the demonstrator of this new game failed to connect with the ball. Chaos ensued. However, the ball remained patiently on the tee waiting to be hit.

God has a plan for you according to the counsel of his will. Sometimes, his will for you may seem to take a long time to materialise. Sometimes, chaos may ensue around you as you wait for him to direct your path to victory. God’s purpose for you is unique. No one else can fulfil the plan he has for you. So, wait patiently for him to drive you straight and true, in his time. Author Frank Peretti said, “'God has created us in his image and put each of us here on earth for specific purposes. That means every human being has intrinsic value, preciousness, meaning and dignity.”

God-tracking is waiting for him to drive us straight and true.

Don’t Give Up, Look Up & Pray

“Forgive me for my impatience and help me to wait on you despite the chaos that’s going on around me.”

“Dear Lord, I know you have a plan to use me here at home, at work and in my church. Your purposes are according to the counsel of your will for my life. And yet, O Lord, I often find myself sitting quietly on the tee, waiting to be driven straight and true. Forgive me for my impatience and help me to wait patiently for you despite the chaos that’s going on around me. Dear Lord, open your way – your opportunities – for me to follow the plans you know you have for me. Amen.”

Get Away From It All

“Come to him in prayer today and get away from it all. Offload those stresses onto his shoulders. Your soul will find rest in God. Your hope comes from him.”

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.

Nine symptoms of stress overload:

1. Decision-making becomes difficult.
2. Frequent spells of brooding and feelings of inadequacy.
3. Increased use of caffeine and uppers.
4. Thoughts trail off while speaking or writing.
5. Excessive worrying about all things.
6. Sudden outbursts of temper.
7. Mistrust of friends and family.
8. Forgetfulness.
9. Excessive daydreaming or fantasizing about "getting away from it all."

Do you ever go to bed at night exhausted after a hard day’s slog only to wake up at the wonder hour of 3.00 am, wondering why you can’t sleep? Too many of us overload our lives with too many duties, activities and responsibilities that induce stress. More often than not, this stress leads to anxiety and fears that the job won’t get done in time or that you will fail in your efforts. Stress and overload result in fatigue and mental illness. Beware!

Jesus was preaching and teaching every day of the week, traveling – on foot – many, many miles to reach as many people as possible. Performing miracles and healing the sick, I think Jesus had a stressful job. Yet we often read how he got away from it all up a mountain to rest and pray. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Granted, he was probably referring to the labour of attempting to follow the many legal requirements of the Law of Moses, but I believe we can apply his word within the context of our daily life, too.

Remember, Jesus said, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” The Holy Spirit is your helper and your guide. So, come to him in prayer today and get away from it all. Offload those stresses onto his shoulders for he cares for you. Your soul will find rest in God. Your hope comes from him.

“Thank you, O Lord, that you care for me and have the power to rescue me from y stress and overload.”

“Dear Lord, I feel so overloaded at the moment. Too much work, too much responsibility! I choose to commit my work to you and seek your strength and help to get the job done. I come to you now in prayer and cast my cares upon you. Thank you, O Lord, that you care for me and have the power to rescue me from my stress and overload. My soul finds rest in you for my hope comes from you. Amen.”
