“As you surrender to the autumn, like an oak tree glorious in its dying, so you will yield pleasing fruit in the new season. Whatever you do will prosper.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Squealing children run through the bright autumnal fall beneath the regal oak as it sighs upon their heads magnificent orange, red and yellow. Arms outstretched, the tree resigns to its destiny to be as though dead for the next five months. It’s been a good summer. Birds have nested and their young have fledged. The sun has streamed upon its majesty in the glow of green but now the tree is dying to its former brilliance and yet, somehow glorious in its dying. Beneath the soil it survives and strengthens. Slowly with every passing day of winter its ancient roots take hold, bravely extending deeper and deeper into the earth so that at the next season of green, it will be more secure to boldly reach from glory to glory.

We read in Scripture, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me,” and “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness.”  Like that oak tree that appears to die when the autumn comes, so we appear to die when we surrender to Christ. We all have that old sinful nature to crucify in the promise that we will live in Christ. In Christ we become new creations; old things pass away and all things become new.

Sometimes God requires that we lay down our dreams or aspirations. Sometimes it’s for our good that we need to surrender ambitions before we can know God’s fresh new life. Scripture makes it clear, the former things have come to pass and God is declaring things new. As you surrender to the autumn, like an oak tree glorious in its dying, so you will soon yield pleasing fruit in the new season. Whatever you do will prosper.

Don’t Give Up, Look Up & Pray

“As I die to the old self, I know, in you, I am glorious in my dying.”

“Dear Lord, forgive me for holding onto old ambitions. I know now that these have come to pass and that you have new things in store for me. I choose to let go of past dreams, ideals and aspirations – I crucify the old life – that I may flourish as a tree planted by streams of water. No Longer Fear Death

“O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?

I stood at a distance in the corner of her room. My wife, Karen’s, dear grandmother was nearing her end. This dear lady had had a wonderful Godfearing life. Her loving family sat by her side. Nan was peaceful, breathing gently. Karen held her hand. The room was crowded; I couldn’t see Nan in her bed. Yet, at that moment I sensed a peace – a power, even – in the room. To me, it seemed as though the room came alive. Nan breathed out quietly as her dear spirit arose to the bosom of her Saviour. Death where is your sting?

The one absolute of this life is death. Though God created man with the intention of eternal life, sin, sadly, corrupted the image of God within him, resulting in mortality. The sting of death is sin. The wages of sin is death, and we will all die. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus, the righteous One, took the wages of sin when he died. But he did not remain dead; Jesus Christ rose from the grave. This is how I know that Christ was sinless: the wages of sin could not hold him down! By faith in his death and resurrection and by confessing him as Lord we, too, can be set free from the wages of sin. The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But we remember God’s word tells us that he knows the plans he has for us. So, indeed, we will all die but even our physical death is in the plans of God for the believer. We have no fear of death. Physical death is merely a transition – a promotion – from this life to the next. God is merciful and, by his grace, has made the way, through Jesus, for anyone who calls on his name to be saved from the fear of death.

The peace, the ecstasy, the joy in that room on that day was palpable. Old Nan had been promoted to glory, no longer confined to the corruption of flesh. What a hope for each of us if we confess Jesus as Lord.

God-tracking has no fear of death.

SO, DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

“I no longer fear death.”

“O Lord, I have always had a fear of death but now I realise that death is no more than a passage to paradise. I believe that Jesus, the righteous Son of God, became sin for me at Calvary so that I could made righteous by his blood. Therefore, I am no longer contaminated by sin and its wages and have the promise of eternal life. I believe Jesus died and rose again and confess him to be my Lord and Saviour. Therefore, I no longer fear death. Thank you, O my Lord. Amen.”
