Jesus performed most of his teaching outdoors along the banks of the Lake Tiberias in Galilee. I could imagine him standing on one of the hills sloping down to the lake, pointing at the birds that were foraging in the long grass nearby, saying, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” Then he adds, “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.”

Jesus knew what tomorrow would bring him. He knew, as the Suffering Servant, he would be despised and rejected by men; wounded for their transgressions and crushed for their iniquities. As the Son of God, he had spiritual insight into the greatest trial any person could ever face – to bear the wages of sin. Yet we read that, for the joy set before, he endured the cross, despised its shame and is saw himself on the other side of the cross, seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Jesus looked beyond his tomorrow and saw himself victorious.

What are you facing tomorrow? Are you fearful of the unknown? Are you worrying where the next paycheque will come from? Will your health hold out? What about the unforeseen calamities that face us all? If you have concerns like these then Listen: “Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

If you know Christ as Lord and Savour, then you are found in him – you are in Christ! In Christ, you are a new creation. In Christ, you are alive to God. In Christ, God will meet all your needs. And in Christ, you are seated with God in heavenly places. All this means that you are safe and secure, in Christ, and God is your provider. He has your tomorrow in his hands. Like the birds of the air, he will meet all your needs. So, don’t worry about tomorrow, just fix your gaze on Jesus and your mind on things above.

Dear God Tracker

Let’s Be Ever Expectant of God but Expect Nothing

The traffic was particularly bad that morning as we inching along the dual carriage way. I stared helplessly at the steam streaming from the exhaust of the car in front while we crawled toward the traffic lights. “You know,” I said to my colleague who I shared lifts with to work, “I think God wants us to be expectant of him. I think he desires to bless us beyond our wildest imagination but we just don’t expect him to do it. And when we do finally come round to anticipating his touch, we expect him to do things our way! It just doesn’t figure. I think we need to be ever expectant of God but expect nothing; expecting him to move but by his own wisdom. It’s A bit like that steam coming from that exhaust over there. We expect it to come out of the tailpipe but we can’t determine in which direction it will blow once it leaves.”

My workmate and I were talking about prayer and how sometimes we think God doesn’t desire to meet our needs or perhaps, it’s just “not his will” to answer our prayers. For instance, so often we find ourselves praying things like, “Lord if it’s your will, heal my sister of cancer.” If it’s his will?! Of course it’s God’s will to heal! The Bible is very clear about God’s will on healing: “by his wounds we are healed,” (1 Peter 2:24); and “prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up,” (James 5:15). However, it is how and when that healing comes that is subject to God’s sovereign purpose. But, rest assured, if we believe then healing will come.

Don’t we often become so intent on prescribing to our God how he should do things and how he should answer prayer? I often find myself praying and instructing God on the science of healing or the mechanism of miracles. I seem to forget that God knows a little more about the laws of nature or the techniques of his own super-nature than I do! After all, God is God and I am not. So, dear God Tracker, let’s be ever expectant of God but expect nothing.

God-tracking is living expectant of God.

Asking According To Your Will

1 John 5:14-15

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.

Pray

“Lord I am sorry for two things today: 1.) for lack of faith in that I have low expectations of you and your power, and 2.) that I often expect you to do answer my prayers my way. I now see that it’s only by your word that I will know your will. So help me to read and absorb your word; help me to remain in your word and your word to remain in me so that when I ask you to meet a need I will be asking according to your will! Therefore, I now pray, O Lord my God, that you will bring healing where healing is due; that you will bring deliverance where deliverance is needed and that you will meet every financial and material need in my life and the lives of my loved ones according to your good pleasure. I have faith in you that you are true to your word. Thank you for answered prayer. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
