But by the grace of God, I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

I was leading worship in my church one Sunday morning when God taught me a very valuable lesson on grace. I was not in a good place in my life at the time. Although I was studying for the ministry and active in church, I was going through a period of dark rebellion. I was very critical and looked for loopholes in Scripture to qualify my unfounded motives. As I played my guitar and led the worship that day, the congregation moved to a higher level of the experience of the Spirit. I was dumbfounded. “How can this be, Lord?” I said in my head as I sang. “These people are in deep worship and yet I - their worship leader - am in a bad place. I feel so unworthy.”

In an instant, I sensed God’s answer, “Yes, Dudley, you are unworthy.”

“There you go,” I grunted indignantly in my heart, “I’m going to quit and hang up my guitar!” Again, the unmistakable still small voice spoke: “You are unworthy to lead these people in worship,” he said, “but I’m not!” Instantly I realised that it was, indeed, not I who was leading the worship that day, it was the Holy Spirit in me drawing those people into the throne room of God. It was God’s doing not mine. A harsh lesson in the truth of grace. Grace is God’s doing, not mine.

I discovered that no matter how bad I was feeling, if God had called me to do a job for him then it’s him in me doing it; not me. This is why Paul writes that Jesus once told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." God’s grace is God doing the job through you even when you’re feeling weak.

The grace of God is twofold: grace saves us from sin through the cross of Jesus and grace empowers us to serve God through the Holy Spirit. By the Holy Spirit Paul writes, “I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.” We labour by God’s powers and not our prowess. And that’s grace.

John Newton said, “I am not what I ought to be. I am not what I want to be. I am not what I hope to be. But still, I am not what I used to be. And by the grace of God, I am what I am.” Grace is God’s doing. Therefore, to stop doing what you are called to do because you feel unworthy is to insult the grace of God.

God-tracking is just doing it, by God’s grace.

Don’t Give Up, Look Up & Pray

“O Lord, forgive me for my arrogance in thinking that it’s my skills and abilities that qualify me to serve you. I realise now that it’s only by your grace that I am what I am. Your grace has saved me and your grace empowers me to serve you. Forgive me for sin and rebellion, dear Father, and help me to serve you in humility, by your grace. I will put you in the cleft of the rock and will cover you with My hand while I pass by.

I sat staring at the microphone in my radio studio. I had just closed the mic after a short chat about a
Bible verse when I was unexpectedly overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of my task. I worked for an international radio ministry that reached millions of people by radio on FM and shortwave. I produced a 2-hour music magazine show that was aired daily from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm. One word from me on the radio could change a life for good. Suddenly I saw millions of lives packed in that that small black AKG radio microphone. I could relate to how Moses must have felt when God called him to lead a million people across a desert to a land flowing with milk and honey.

Moses said to the Lord, “You say to me, ‘Bring up this people. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’” Moses was an outcast. He had killed an Egyptian and was exiled to live in the desert. Here, the Lord of heaven and earth appeared to him and called him to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to the land promised to their father, Abraham. Old Moses lacked self-confidence. He had a stutter and was shy of people. Yet, God had a plan for him. One word from Moses would change, not just one life, but the world.

Obediently Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. Yet he was still unsure of the sheer responsibility he had. It was at Sinai that God gave Moses the 10 commandments that impact lives still today. Moses’ greatest task was to bring us the Law of the Lord. Perhaps it was on the mountain he felt as I felt in my studio that day; insecure and overwhelmed by the task. It was then that Moses was whelmed by the presence of the Lord as God hid him in the cleft of a rock and covered him with his hand. As the next song in my playlist rang out over the airwaves, I was encouraged by the knowledge that his grace and presence were my power to touch the lives of many.

God has a plan for your life. His plan is for your good and for you to touch and change the lives of many for the good, for good. Rest in his rock and know his covering hand.

God-tracking is fulfilling your purpose in the presence of God.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

“Hide me in the cleft of a rock and cover me with your hand so that I may fulfill this task by the power of your presence and grace.”

“O Lord, sometimes I feel so overcome by the tasks you give me. Sometimes I feel that there must be other people who could do a better job than me. But then I remember that, just as Moses felt insecure and unqualified to fulfill his task, yet you came through for him, you are the source of my skill, energy and confidence. Hide me in the cleft of a rock and cover me with your hand so that I may fulfill this task by the power of your presence and grace. Amen.”

“The fear of the Lord is not a trepidation of his presence. The fear of the Lord is a deep reverent respect for his majesty and power. The fear of God is to worship him in spirit with a true heart and in love because he's good. He's the king.”

Psalm 25:12
Who is the man that fears the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.

In The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, two girls, Susan and Lucy, get ready to meet Aslan the Lion. Aslan represents Christ. Mr. and Mrs. Beaver prepare the children for the encounter. "Ooh," said Susan, "I thought he was a man. Is he quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion."

"That you will, dearie," said Mrs. Beaver. "And make no mistake, if there's anyone who can appear before Aslan without their knees knocking, they're either braver than most or else just silly."

"Then isn't he safe?" said Lucy. "Safe?" said Mr. Beaver. "Don't you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? Of course, he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the king, I tell you!"

I’m learning daily, the fear of God. The fear of God is not fight or flight. The fear of God is like the fear one might have of high voltage. High-voltage electricity has the power to snuff out life in a flash, yet we employ 220V daily to run our appliances in the home. I have deep respect for the power socket in my bedroom but I’m most grateful for the power it provides to bring me light in the dark.

Our God is high and exalted. He is our sovereign Majesty. His character is supreme, his power unlimited and his will, paramount. Our God is the supreme Creator of the universe. He has the power to snuff out life in a flash. Yet, God loved you and me so much that he gave his righteous Son as a propitiation for our sins. By his grace, we boldly approach his throne and obtain mercy and grace to help us in our time of need.

To fear God is to love God. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love. To fear God is to not fear his judgement. If you know Christ as Saviour, having surrendered your life to him, then you live in love, not fear. Perfect love casts out fear. Yet we are told that he will teach us his ways if we fear him.

The fear of the Lord is not a trepidation of his presence. The fear of the Lord is a deep reverent respect for his majesty, power and grace. The fear of God is to lovingly worship him in spirit with a true heart. He's good. He's the king.

God-tracking is walking in the fear of the Lord.

Grace Keeps You in the Will of God

“Indeed, the will of God will not place you where the grace of God cannot keep you. Remaining in the will of God may seem gruelling at times but his grace will suffice.”

2 Corinthians 12:9
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

"The will of God will not place you where the grace of God cannot keep you," said Derek Prince as I watched him on television. Indeed, as I always say, grace is God’s doing. The grace of God was demonstrated when he sent his Son, Jesus, to stand proxy for us for the wages of sin. God’s grace is demonstrated every day in us as he empowers us to labour abundantly. It is plain, the will of God is revealed in the grace of God. It was his will that Jesus died for our sins and it is his will that we follow his plans to serve him. His grace keeps us within the confines of his will.

Dwelling in the will of God is always a place of security and peace. However, dwelling in the will of God is seldom a comfortable place to live. Ask any missionary serving God in the field. Ask Apostle Peter or Apostle Paul. Better yet, Ask Jesus Christ. Jesus, confronted by the will of God in Gethsemane, prayed, “Abba, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Elisabeth Elliot said, “The will of God is never exactly what you expect it to be. It may seem to be much worse, but in the end, it's going to be a lot better and a lot bigger.” In Gethsemane, Jesus faced crucifixion. Facing the will of God was torturous for Jesus. Yet, we read that he looked beyond the crucifixion and perceived the joy of the resurrection, the accession and being seated at the right hand of God in glory. Grace is God’s doing and the God’s grace enabled Jesus to follow the will of God through the cross and on to victory.

Indeed, the will of God will not place you where the grace of God cannot keep you. Remaining in the will of God may seem gruelling at times but his grace will suffice. So, fix your gaze on Jesus, the author of your faith, and remain true to the will of God.

God-tracking is following the will of God empowered by grace.

GOD-TRACKING IS NOT BY POWER NOR MIGHT BUT BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

 Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through him who strengthens me

 “It’s only by the anointing of the Holy Spirit of God upon you, that will qualify you to succeed.”

I could imagine Governor Zerubbabel sitting among the rubble of the ruins of Solomon’s temple on Mount Zion. He was one of those people who had returned from Babylon, who was perhaps born in captivity. “Adonai, I am a simple man with no knowledge of building a grand temple to your glory. I’m not a mighty warier like King David of old, or powerfully wealthy like King Solomon who built this temple. How am I to do this great task you’re asking of me? How will I restore your mighty temple?”

The Babylonians had conquered Judah in 587 B.C. The Jews had turned from God’s Law and were worshipping useless idols. Through his prophets, God warned his people that Jerusalem would fall, because of their rebellion. For 70 years they would remain in exile. After this time, God would restore his people and rebuild Jerusalem. When Persia overthrew Babylon, its king, Cyrus issued a decree that the Jews could return to their homeland. God inspired Ezra and Nehemiah to unite his people and restore Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. Zerubbabel was appointed governor under the king of Persia. Zerubbabel was a humble man facing the greatest task of his life. I believe Zerubbabel lacked the confidence and skills required to undertake such a great mission. He had neither the military might of David or the monitory power of Solomon, yet God had called him to rebuild Jerusalem and its temple.

Zerubbabel sat with his head in his hands in the blazing sun. Behind him he heard the voice of the prophet Zechariah, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”

Dear friend, God has a job for you to do. The Scripture tells us that he knows the plans he has for us. Perhaps you’re feeling a little like Governor Zerubbabel felt that day; not qualified or skilled like your predecessors to adequately do the job. God’s Word to you today is, it’s not by the financial power or physical, academic or natural might that you will successfully accomplish this task. It’s only by the anointing of the Holy Spirit of God upon you, that will qualify you to succeed. So, acknowledge the Lord in this mission, seek his power and might and believe that you can do all things through Christ who is your strength. And go for it!

 “Holy God, thank you that you have a calling on my life. I surrender to your will and your plans for me. Help me to not rely on my own skills or abilities. Your Word is true. I accept your word to me today that I will succeed not by my abilities but only by the might and power of your Spirit in me. I acknowledge you in all my work and seek your anointing to fulfil my responsibilities. Help me Lord, to be successful in all I do; I put my faith in you. I can do this, through Christ who gives me strength. Amen.”
