Steve was packing up his guitar after leading worship at the Sunday evening church service. He’d been attending this church for three years and believed he had built good relationships with other people in the fellowship. As he picked up his guitar to leave, Ron walked up to him.
“Steve, the music was good tonight,” he said, “but I need to tell you something. We’ve known each other for a while but, I want you to know that I’ve always had a problem with you. But I sorted it out tonight. I’m ok with you now.” Ron promptly turned on his heels and strode away, leaving Steve bamboozled and wondering what it was about him that Ron had had a problem with. Ron’s heart was now “ok”, but it was Steve who was now left with the “problem”.

Words are like superglue. Once you get it on your fingers it sticks. Author Ted Chiang said, “Four things do not come back: the spoken word, the sped arrow, the past life, and the neglected opportunity.” Scripture tells us that the words we speak have the power to inspire life or bring death to a soul. Jesus said this: “Hear and understand, it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” He also said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Ron believed he was being honest and transparent when he told Steve he had a problem with him. However, Steve had no idea that he had ever offended Ron in any way what so ever. Ron only invoked concern in Steve’s heart with his confession; concern that he was not a nice guy. Ron’s statement left Steve feeling confused about his subliminal character and behaviour. How many other people had he unwittingly offended? He felt hurt that he had somehow offended Steve without knowing it.

Dear God Tracker, let us beware of our words! My mother used to always say, “Think before you speak.” In our story today, Ron might have thought he was being honest with Steve when he told him he’d always had a problem with him, but his words did more damage than they did good. Transparency is a healthy concept but when being transparent causes undue hurt, it is better to guard the gate of your lips. Therefore, as God’s word says, let us rather encourage one another with our words and build one another up.

God-tracking is speaking positive words of encouragement.

Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!

G.W. Knight said, “When a person works an eight-hour day and receives a fair day's pay for his time, that is a wage. When a person competes with an opponent and receives a trophy for his performance, that is a prize. When a person receives appropriate recognition for his long service or high achievements, that is an award. But when a person is not capable of earning a wage, can win no prize, and deserves no award--yet receives such a gift anyway--that is a good picture of God's unmerited favour. This is what we mean when we talk about the grace of God.”

Grace is God’s doing. And God did it when he sent Jesus to die and rise from the dead, on our part. Though you and are not capable of earning a wage, can win no prize, and deserves no award, yet receive such a gift anyway, demonstrates God’s saving grace. Jesus took the wages of sin when he died and was awarded the prize of victory when he rose from the grave, on our part. The true picture of God's unmerited favour – his grace – is our salvation.

However, God’s grace does not only save us, God’s grace empowers us to serve. God’s grace establishes the work of our hands. God’s grace is sufficient.

I’ve been through some intense times of demotivation in my life. Times when I’ve been unmotivated to go to work or perform my daily tasks, unmotivated to speak to people and even unmotivated to do home chores. Yet, the show must go on! You know that feeling? When you wake up in the morning with no energy to face the day, but still need to get on with the job.

It was on one of these mornings that the Holy Spirit led me to Psalm 90:17: “Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!” Indeed, I needed motivation to get the job done, but only God could motivate me. I needed his favour on my meagre effort, to establish the work of my hands. His grace is his favour.
It’s at times like these that I’ve learned how important it is to put self aside and humbly seek the grace of God. If grace is God’s doing, then I need God to work through me today. His grace has saved me from sin and death and his grace establishes the work of my hands.

GOD-TRACKING IS EXPECTING GOD’S ABUNDANCE WITH A PURE HEART

 “There are no half measures in the kingdom of God. He will meet all your needs according to his riches, in Christ. And that, with quality!”

 Philippians 4:19And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

In John chapter 2 we read of the first miracle Jesus performed. He, his family and friends had been invited to a wedding in Cana. According to Jewish custom, the bride was probably still confined to her wedding chamber or huppah. She would remain there for the seven days of the huppah feast. It was probably toward the middle of these seven days of celebration that Jesus’ mother overheard the servants mention that the wine had run out. By her persistence, Mary persuaded Jesus to intervene. Jesus proceeded to convert 816 litres of water into the finest quality wine.
There are several significant truths in this story that have impacted my life, as a God Tracker. I’d like to share two with you today.

1. Vessels of Purification

 The urns that were used to contain the water that Jesus had turned into wine were jars used for Jewish rites of purification. This ritualistic purification symbolized cleansing of the soul. That is, when the Jews washed their hands according to these rites, they were demonstrating an attitude of repentance of sin. Jesus used symbols of cleansing and repentance to produce pleasing good new wine.
Before we can expect a miracle of God’s righteous new, we need to repent of our sinful of old. God desires to turn your old mundane routines into new excellent purposes if you are willing to come to him with clean hands and a pure heart.

1. More Than Enough

The Jews in Jesus’ day would probably celebrate a wedding for seven days or more, which required a good deal of catering. At this wedding, they had run out of wine. So, Jesus produces more than 800 litres of very high-quality wine to meet the need. By his wisdom and grace, he provides with excellence and abundance.
What are you seeking God for today? Do you have a need in your life? Do you feel as though you have run out of steam to face tomorrow? Well, let me say that God is able and willing to meet all your needs, and then some! When Paul the Apostle complained that he had run dry, Jesus told him, “My grace is sufficient for you.” At another time Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” There are no half measures in the kingdom of God. He will meet all your needs according to his riches, in Christ. And that, with quality.
There is much more in this story. Please read it. Please take it to heart.

GOD-TRACKING IS TAKING A GOD-GIVEN SABBATH REST. BEWARE OF BURNOUT!

“Jesus also told us to come to him when we’re weary and then he would give us rest. He told us to be yoked with him in our work. You see, when we yoke up with Christ, he becomes our motivation and stamina.”

It was early morning as he sat on the edge of his bed, head in hands and heart heavy. His workload had increased ten-fold, at least, over the past six months. Pressure to deliver was mounting and people were placing undue expectations upon him. Business had improved but, along with increased productivity came increased responsibility. With increased responsibility came undue criticism and judgement.

Joe was at the end of his tether. He’d been working almost 7 days per week for months and had simply run out of fuel. He had lost motivation to go on and was emotionally numb. Joe was a gentle amicable person but now he found himself consumed with cynicism. Hot tears well up in his tired eyes he began to sob uncontrollably. He’d never felt this way before. Joe was on the verge of crashing.

Have you ever reached the point that Joe reached on that formidable morning – overworked, fatigued and burnt out? God did not create us to work 7 days a week at the expense of family and health. Apart from the obvious effects of stress on the heart and digestive system, research reveals that stress can also cause asthma, obesity and Alzheimer's disease.

God has given you a precious cargo. You have a life and a purpose that he has created for you to honour him. You have a family who need you to be strong and secure. Jesus once said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” The Lord God created the universe in six days and then rested on the seventh. God is not a man that he should require rest (he neither slumbers nor sleeps) but he set us the example of the Sabbath, so that we might rest. It is not only a sin to violate the Sabbath, it’s foolish! Jesus also told us to come to him when we’re weary and then he would give us rest. He told us to be yoked with him in our work. You see, when we yoke up with Christ, he becomes our motivation and stamina.

If you feel the way Joe did that morning, when his world fell apart, take a break! Come to Jesus and he will give you rest.

God-tracking is taking a God-given Sabbath rest. Beware of burnout!

…looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

We’ve all heard the charming little childhood story of a little blue engine who looked at his impossible task of pulling a train up a steep hill and said, "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can." Filled with determination, the little blue engine huffed and puffed and pulled up the hill until he made it to the top.

In an amusing little twist to the original story, another author wrote: "He was almost there, when --CRASH! SMASH! BASH! The little blue engine slid all the way down again and ended up in a heap at the foot of the hill. Which goes to show, if the track is tough and the hill is rough, only thinking you can, just ain't enough."

King David was an anointed God-fearing king in Israel. Being called a man after God’s own heart, he was one of the ancients who was filled with the Holy Spirit. David penned many positive and uplifting Psalms. However, David was also an honest realist who faced much opposition to his position, even from within his own family. Once his son Absalom rebelled and conspired to overthrow his father. In his response, David did not retaliate; he did not ignore the attack or depend on the power of positive thought to overcome this great obstacle. David did what he always did – he turned to the Lord and depended on God’s plans for deliverance. He wrote in a psalm, “O Lord, how many are my foes! But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.”

Whatever hill you are climbing today; whatever conspiracy you may face, know this, it is not by your effort that you will make it to the top. You will overcome only by faith in God’s plans for your deliverance, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” Only faith in God’s purposes for your life, by his grace and might, will you pull your train to the top of the hill. So, set your eyes on Jesus, the author of your faith, and keep puffing away.

Forgive me for taking my eyes off Jesus and depending on my own power of positive thinking. I choose now to look to Christ and follow his example. Jesus climbed mount Calvary, endured death with confidence in your plan, O God, to raise him from the dead and seat him on the throne of heaven. So, I take my eyes off this mountain in my life and I keep climbing with faith in your plans, by your power. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS DARING TO BE DIFFERENT

“God does not want us to conform to the humanist ways of the world’s standards, but to transform our thinking; to know his will. You see, through Christ, God has called you to be different!”

Matthew 16:25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.

I recently watched a documentary series on television that discussed the origins and future of Christianity. It portrayed “the Church” as a religious institution intent on taking over the world at all costs. It showed how, after Constantine had declared Christianity to be the state religion of the Roman Empire in about 313 AD, crusades and campaigns were launched to force the world to convert to Christianity. Sadly, what they said about this period of the history of the Church was true. However, what the documentary failed to reveal was the true origins of Christianity, as seen on the Day of Pentecost around 33 AD, when God poured his spirit out on the early believers. Reading Acts and the gospels shows a very different picture of the origins and motives of true Christianity.

After Peter had identified Jesus as the Christ, Jesus said to him, “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” The use of the word church here comes from the Greek word ekklesia which means called out ones. Jesus explained to Peter that he would be the founder of a body of believers who would be called out to be different from the world. In other words, the true Church would be made up of true followers of the Messiah, living by his words and principles. And Jesus taught things like: love your enemies, if someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to him the other also, give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and if anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last and the servant of all. The “Church” portrayed in that television documentary was nowhere near the true Church that Jesus built upon the early disciples.

Dear friend if you call yourself a GodTracker and have truly committed yourself to following Christ then you have decided to live by all that Christ taught. If you call yourself a born again Christian and if you have repented of sin, then you have come out from the world and have been grafted into Jesus, the true vine. All else is false religion. Unfortunately, institutionalised Christianity became nothing more than a pride filled humanistic attempt to conquer the world. During the period of history discussed in the documentary I was watching, the Church had lost its true calling, because it failed to humbly come out from the world and be different.

Do you call yourself a Christian simply because you were born in a Christian country or raised under Christian values? Do you call yourself a Christian simply because you occasionally attend church or say grace before you eat a meal? Or are you prepared to call yourself a Christian because you have denied your ego and have taken up your cross to follow Jesus? God is calling us out of the world to be separate from its values – to be holy as he is holy. Jesus is building his ekklesia that will stand strong against the gates of hell, but God is not calling us to defend the faith or forcefully convert the world. In fact, Jesus said that the way they will know that we are his disciples is by our love. God does not want us to conform to the humanist ways of the world’s standards, but to transform our thinking; to know his will. You see, through Christ, God has called you to be different!

I choose now to live a life that is different to the ways of the world I see around me

O sovereign Lord, I realise that I have lived a life less than separate from the ways of the world. I know now that I have been looking at Christianity as a religion and not a relationship. I’m sorry Lord. I’m sorry for anything that I have said, done or thought that has grieved you in any way, and I want you to renew my mind so that I will walk according to your perfect plan for my life. I choose now to walk by faith and humility before you. I choose now to live a life that is different to the ways of the world I see around me. I want to conform to your holy image and live in love for you and my fellow man. Help me to renew my thinking by your words, Jesus. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS RUNNING ON EMPTY BY GRACE

“You may feel your motivation and passion are burned out. But keep your eyes on Jesus and rest in the grace of God. Grace is God’s doing! Grace is your fuel! Grace is your anointing, and the anointing breaks the yoke.”

2 Corinthians 12:10For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong

In one of his letters to the church of Corinth, Paul talks about his thorn in the flesh. There has been much speculation as to what Paul’s thorn was. In a letter to the church at Corinth Paul says, “Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

The book of 2nd Corinthians is a deeply personal letter. The circumstances behind this letter reveal the difficult, often painful realities of ministry life. More than any of his other epistles, 2 Corinthians shows Paul’s pastor’s heart. In 1 Corinthians we learn that the church in Corinth was rebellious and struggling with division and spiritual immaturity. Paul's authority had been undermined and his teaching contradicted.

I would like to add a suggestion as to what Paul’s thorn was. Could it have been that the apostle was burned out and running on empty? A man of passion, Paul had given his all for the churches he’d planted. Some of them were thriving while others, like Corinth, turned out to be a thorn in the flesh. The Corinthian church had become, insubordinate, critical and judgemental. Paul was facing what we might term, church politics. He says, “For I fear that perhaps when I come, I may find you not as I wish. That perhaps there may be quarrelling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.” Paul had poured so much into this group of believers, only to have them criticise him and rebel against his leadership. Nothing is more demoralising to a pastor than a critical spirit. Paul was emotionally threadbare.

Yet, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Paul writes that God’s grace is enough, and his power is made perfect in our weakness. Paul was facing a great challenge to his ministry. He was weak. However, Jesus tells him that he is strong in his weaknesses. Paul says to the Corinthians, “For Christ was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.”

Whatever opposition you are facing today; whatever may be your thorn in the flesh, never quit! You may feel your motivation and passion are burned out. But keep your eyes on Jesus and rest in the grace of God. Grace is God’s doing! Grace is your fuel! Grace is the anointing that breaks the yoke.

Help me to be strong in your strength. Help me to face this criticism with integrity and grace

“O Lord I feel completely rundown. I have no energy, no passion and no motivation to do anything. I want to give up, but I won’t. Instead I choose to look up and surrender to you. I give over to your grace. Your grace is my power and my fuel. I feel so weak, but I know that my human strength can never be enough to fulfil your plans for my life. Therefore, I set my eyes on Jesus and look through this thorn in my flesh to see myself as an overcomer and a victor. Help me to be strong in your strength. Help me to face this criticism with integrity and grace. In you I will continue; I will persevere. You are my source and my resource. Amen.”
