God-tracking is resting in the effort of faith in God’s grace 

“I am trying so hard,” said my young colleague on the coach to church one Sunday morning.  “I’ve prayed the prayer and I’m attending church but it’s just so tough trying to be born again!” We were talking about how to become a Christian. I’d quoted Jesus’ words to Nicodemus when he said, “No one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” Jesus was, of course, talking about how, if we desired to know God’s forgiveness and the promise of heaven, we need to be born of the Spirit. That is, because all of us are spiritually dead in sin, we need to be spiritually born again to know new life in Jesus. My friend knew the theory but she was attempting to “get born again” by working at being a good person. Truth be told, that is an impossible feat! We can only be born again and made right before God through faith, by God’s grace. It’s the simplest thing in the world: admit and turn from sin, confess Jesus as Lord and believe that he died and rose again. If my colleague had simply done this then she would have been born again at no effort of her own.

The Bible tells us that we are saved by God’s effort through the cross of Jesus. You see, the Lord himself has done the job by sending Jesus – the sinless One – to take sin upon him when he was executed on the cross. This is grace. However, the only effort we can put in to our own salvation is to admit that we are not saved by our own effort but by God’s effort through the cross. This is faith.

Grace and faith do apply to your salvation but grace and faith apply also to the rest of your daily God-tracking life, too. By grace God has given you his word – the Bible – and by faith you live by its precepts and promises. By grace God has given you the deposit of his Holy Spirit for power and accomplishment; by faith you live a daily miraculous life. By grace God has empowered you to serve him and walk in holiness; by faith you grab a hold of his purposes and glory. Today, dear God-tracker, come to Jesus and make every effort to resign to God’s grace.

Dear God-tracker 

God-tracking is TRUSTING God’s plan ‘A’ 

When my wife and I sensed God’s call to leave South Africa and move to the UK there were many obstacles to negotiate. One of these obstacles involved acquiring a heritage visa to live and work in the UK. At the time, there were several complications in applying for this document. After following the appropriate procedures I was finally instructed to attend an interview at Heathrow airport, which would determine whether we stayed in the UK or whether we would be put on a plane back to S.A. My brother, a British citizen, drove me to the airport.

“What’s plan ‘B’,” Greg asked?

“There is no plan ‘B’,” I replied. “God has called us to this country. That’s plan ‘A’. God doesn’t have a contingency plan.”

After a 3-hour interview I was handed my passport by a reluctant official who said, “I don’t know why we’re doing this but here’s your visa!” 

Jesus once faced a similar situation. In an olive grove outside of Jerusalem he was in a state of intense stress. He knew that in a few hours he’d be arrested, sentenced and crucified for crimes he had never committed. Still he prayed, “Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." If our loving God had had a contingency plan for Jesus then he may have answered, “My son, plan ‘B’ would be for you to walk away from this place and let man die in their sins.” 

God-tracker, God has only a plan ‘A’ for your life. When he calls he does so with purpose and deliberation. God is omniscient and he knows all there is to know about every situation you may ever face in life, as you seek to track his call. God knows the plans he has for you and his plans are always perfect. In his foreknowledge he knows the obstacles that you will face in tracking his plan ‘A’. The Lord will always make a way for you to leap over every hurdle the devil may put in your path. So, continue to seek and acknowledge the Lord in all you do and you will walk according to his will. With our God there is no plan ‘B’

Dear God-tracker 

God-tracking is sinking your roots deep into GOD’S word in search of HIS living water 

The tender sapling beneath the great Oak was just one year old yet he knew well the taste of drought. As an acorn he had not fallen far from the mighty tree as it grew near the river. His young roots had quickly found living water and the acorn had germinated into a strapping young plant. But now, somehow, the river’s water seemed out of reach. There was only one thing the sapling could do: extend his roots deeper into the substrate of the earth in search of that life giving moisture. 

A tree is comprised primarily of two sections, one above ground and the other beneath the surface. The leaves, branches and the trunk – the part we view as the tree – is only as secure and healthy as its root system. The roots collect both nutrients from the earth and water. You could say that the earth is its food while the water is its life. When dry seasons come along a tree will focus its energy on root development, digging deeper into the substrate of the earth to find more life giving moisture 

The scripture tells us that the man who walks honourably before God is like a tree planted by streams of water and that he delights in God’s word. As Christians we have been made righteous before God through Jesus. This means that, by God’s grace, you are that man who walks honourably before God. As such you are planted by streams of water; these streams are the living waters that Jesus spoke about in John 4. Scripture also says that man does not live by natural bread alone but by every word that God speaks, and Jesus is that Word - the bread of life.  

Therefore, dear God-tracker, like that sapling, if you feel as though your river has dried up then  sink your roots down deeper into the substrate of God’s word and draw living water from his Holy Spirit. And here’s the promise: you will yield your fruit in season your leaf will not wither and whatever you do will prosper!

God-tracking is sinking your roots deep into God’s word in search of his living water.

God-tracking is never looking down in the face of battle!

 

Jehoshaphat dropped his head and gazed at the mosaic floor of his chamber, the messengers’ words still ringing in his ears, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom.” This was a situation he’d feared for so long. He had dreaded an attack from the Moabites and Ammonites and now it was happening. Slowly raising his head the king knew there was only one thing to do: enquire of Yahweh. Jehoshaphat called for a fast and prayed, “O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.” The word of God came to him through the prophet, “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.” While Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were still praising God, the Lord set ambushes against their enemy and totally annihilated it. God was true to his word. The battle Jehoshaphat faced was the Lord’s.

 

As God-trackers we face many dreaded situations that appear to be beyond our control. But I believe that the Lord is calling us to look up and fix our eyes on Jesus. Jesus, Son of God, has already fought the fight and won the battle. He has ridiculed sin, Satan and death itself at Calvary. Today he is calling you and me to praise him in the face of our enemies and gain ground for Jesus. The scripture tells us that the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. It’s time to get up and take back what Satan has stolen from us.

 

Christian, be radical! Your fight is not against any man but against the forces of darkness. So put on God’s whole armour today, turn from sin and walk by faith and not by sight. It only takes the smallest amount of faith to move a mountain. It’s time for you to move forward not backward; to look up and not down; forcefully advance and take back your life from your enemy, the devil. God has good and great things in store for you so do not hold back. Like Jehoshaphat, lift your gaze and praise God in the face of your fight. After all, he battle is not yours but God’s!

Dear God-tracker

 

God-tracking is holding on to that Word God has GIVEN you, today

 

God’s Word, the Bible, is packed with promises of God for those who love and serve him through Jesus Christ. God has promised hope for eternal life, forgiveness of sin, healing for the sick, provision for the needy, joy for the grieving and peace for anxious. I also believe that the Lord has a unique promise for the plan and purpose of your life, today. His plans are always good and his plans never come undone. And here’s the proverbial cherry on the top of the cream cake: all of God’s promises are yes and amen through the Lord Jesus Christ!

                                         

As you read these words here today and look up the scriptures listed below know this, I believe the Lord has a specific word for you. I believe, dear God Tracker, that God’s purpose for you is definitely not over, yet. In fact, God’s purposes for those who seek to track his will are never completed until the day they breathe their last breath on earth and go home to their Lord in glory. As you read these words here today, know that God’s word to you is: he will fulfil your hearts longing if you continue to acknowledge him in all your ways and walk according to his word.

 

You may have been praying about a new opportunity or waiting for the Lord to prompt a decision that you are about to make; a decision that will change your life. God may have promised you a new venture that will end up bending you and manipulating you in ways you may never expect but know this, he will never leave you alone. His word is always true and his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.

 

If that’s for you today then I hear the Holy Spirit say, “I love it when a plan comes together;” and his plans are to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a new future. Walk in his promises today and never look back!

Dear God-tracker

 

God-tracking is coming humbly hungry to his table 

When I came home from the office on Tuesday afternoon I was not a little hungry. As I walked through the front door I was hit by the aroma of a delicious spicy curry coming from the kitchen. My empty tummy performed cartwheels! “How far is dinner?” I asked my lovely wife as she stirred the steaming pot on the cooker. “Probably another half hour,” she replied.

I knew I’d never make it. When my tummy is hungry then I am blinded to all good reason, so I invaded the snack box. Hmm, a bag of crisps would be nice… and a Mars Bar, perhaps. I munched a snack before supper. Thirty minutes later when I finally sat down with the family to consume that scrumptious curry that my wife had so lovingly prepared I was disappointed to find that I was no longer hungry. 

Humbly hungry is how we are to come before the Lord our God. The Lord is magnificent, almighty and all-powerful. In fact, God is so great and infinite that we would never be able - in this life - to know his fullness. However, we are called to seek him with all our hearts. We are encouraged to be hungry for his righteousness. Jesus is called God’s Rest, any wonder then that he says that when we are weary we are to come to him. We come to him just as we are – empty and humbly hungry. 

I encourage you today to not snack before dinner. Don’t allow yourself to be filled up with the things this world can offer, before coming to Jesus. Humbly come to him with an empty spiritual tummy, hungry for what only he can give you. The Psalms tell us that he prepares a table for us before our enemies. So come hungry to the banquet he has fixed for you; hungry for that deposit from heaven, his Holy Spirit. Only he can satisfy your cravings and your longings. Only he can fulfil your purposes and ambitions. His presence is all you need today, tomorrow and for the rest of your life. 

God-tracking is coming humbly hungry to his table.
