Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is wrestling with God in season and out of season

Jacob paused and sat down on a rock. His hip was aching with every step he took. What a night it had been. After leaving his family and animals on the other side of the stream he had settled back down for the night. As he say there he thought about how, as the last ambers were flickering in the fire, suddenly he was awakened by a man standing at his side. He’d jumped up and tried to wrestle the man to the ground, but the man was too strong. They had wrestled all through the rest of the night until dawn smudged the eastern horizon with its light.
“Let me go,” the man had said. “Not until you bless me, “replied Jacob.”
“What is your name,” asked the man?
“Jacob.”
“From now on you will be called, Israel, because you have struggled with God!”

As Jacob sat pondering the night’s events on that rock he realised that this man was more than just an intruder in his camp. He had wrestled with The Angel of the Lord - with God himself - and was left with a sign to prove it. His hip ached intensely.

Jacob had experienced a life of seasonal changes. When he succeeded in swindling his twin brother, Esau out of his birth right and inheritance he’d thought he was onto a good thing but soon found himself fleeing his brother to a distant land. There he fell in love with the girl of his dreams. But instead of a season of love, Jacob found himself slogging it out for 14 seasons of hard labour in order to earn the hand of Rachel in marriage. During this time Jacob had become very rich but soon was to receive word that Esau was tracking him down. He stood to lose all his wealth and perhaps even his own life at the hand of his brother. Throughout his life Jacob had faced seasons of plenty and seasons of struggle and now he found himself alone, wrestling with God in one of those out-of-season moments of life.

Jacob wrestled with God until he received the Lord’s blessing. God intervened in his reunion with Esau and spared his life. Jacob then progressed to become the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. However, he always walked with that limp… a sign to remind him to be ready to wrestle with God through every season of life.

Whatever season of life you find yourself in today only the Lord can be the source of your hope and future. He does have a plan for you but you may need to be ready to wrestle with God throughout every season of life. If you’re in a season of plenty then praise God and be sure to keep your eyes on Jesus, lest you fall into complacency. If you’re in a season of want then turn to the Lord your source and resource and never let him go. Paul instructed his prodigy, Timothy to be ready to preach God’s word in-season and out-of-season. Likewise, whether you’re feeling on the top of the world or down in the dumps in your Christian walk today, make sure you hold onto Jesus and wrestle with him through every season of change until he richly blesses you.

…every limp I have is a reminder of your hand upon my life

Pray:
“Dear Lord I feel as though I have been wrestling all night with this problem. I don’t know what tomorrow holds but I do know that you’re there already, in my tomorrow, meeting my needs. I believe that you have a plan for my life, so today I want to put my trust in your plan commit this problem to you. Help me to keep my eyes on you and to wrestle with your word through all the in-seasons and the out-of-seasons of my days. As I look back on those trying times I realise that every limp I have is a reminder of your hand upon my life. You are my source and my resource. I will hold onto your promises, always. Amen.”

01 May 2015

Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is a daily God-consciousness

A while back I sensed Holy Spirit telling me to give him 7 days as a kind of fast by focusing my time and energies on his presence. I felt he was saying that I should not be consumed by anything else in the week except that which was essential to doing my daily job and loving those around me. He impressed upon me that I was to commit every day of the week to consciously seeking him and to looking for Jesus’ touch on all that I was doing.

I will admit that, as the week progressed, it took some serious self-discipline for me to stop myself from thinking about my selfish ambitions, aspirations and desires. Every time I became distracted by my daily routine or began to daydream about the future, Holy Spirit would draw me back to being conscious of his presence at that moment. I began to learn that I should view everything in my life, from brushing my teeth to loving my wife or planning the future, in the awareness of his presence. I discovered that the Lord my God should fill my whole vision. To me, Jesus should be larger than life!

As the week continued, the Lord began revealing things in my daily life that both pleased him and grieved him. I began working through some painful memories as the Holy Spirit revealed people that I had not yet forgiven. I also discovered aspects that God wanted me to concentrate more on as well as facets of my daily life that I needed surrender. I began to view my relationships, my recreation and my work through God’s eyes. He taught me to ask questions like, do I find Jesus in what I’m doing right now and can I be absolutely honest in saying that my activities, thoughts or words can be done in the conscious awareness of his presence?

Now, as my days progress, I discover the importance of tracking God’s will in very nuisance of my daily life. Every day I realise that I am not my own. My life is his and all that I desire should be to remain in his will. The Bible says, “It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives through me and the life I live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.” It also reminds us to seek first God’s domain in our lives and his goodness before we can begin to realise his daily blessings and provision. Funny though, the closer I get to God, the further I realise I am from Him.

Lord, help me to live every day with my Jesus, larger than life before my eyes

Pray:
“Heavenly Father I realise that I have not been conscious of your presence in every aspect of my daily routine. I confess that I have filled my days with things that are not pleasing to you and I repent, O Lord. I choose now to live moment by moment aware of your presence and that your eyes upon my life. But Lord, I admit that I find it very difficult to live like this. Somehow my ego has crept into everything in my life from my relationships to my private habits. Never-the-less, I know that only by your strength I will be able to face all circumstances and fulfil every plan you have for me. Lord, help me to live every day with my Jesus, larger than life before my eyes. I can do all things through you. Amen.”
