“You may feel your motivation and passion are burned out. But keep your eyes on Jesus and rest in the grace of God… Grace is God’s doing! Grace is your fuel! Grace is your anointing, and the anointing always breaks the yoke.”

2 Corinthians 12:10
For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

In one of his letters to the church of Corinth, by the Holy Spirit, Paul talks about his thorn in the flesh.
There has been much speculation as to what Paul’s thorn was. In the letter to the church, Paul writes, “Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

The book of 2nd Corinthians is a deeply personal letter. The circumstances behind this letter reveal the difficult and often painful realities of ministerial life. More than any of his other epistles, 2 Corinthians shows Paul’s pastor’s heart. In 1 Corinthians we learn how the church in Corinth was rebellious, struggling with division and spiritual immaturity. Paul's authority had been undermined and his teaching contradicted.

Therefore, I would like to add a suggestion as to what Paul’s thorn was. Could it have been that the apostle was burned out and running on empty? A man of passion, Paul had always given his all for the churches he’d planted. Some of them were thriving while others, like Corinth, turned out to be a thorn in the flesh. The Corinthian church had become insubordinate, critical and judgemental. Paul was facing what we might term, church politics. He says, “For I fear that perhaps when I come, I may find you not as I wish. That perhaps there may be quarrelling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.” Paul had poured so much into this group of believers, only to have them criticise him and rebel against his leadership. Nothing is more demoralising for a pastor than a critical spirit. I believe Paul was emotionally threadbare.

Yet, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul writes that God’s grace is enough, and his power is made perfect in our weakness. Paul was facing a great challenge to his ministry. He was feeling weak. However, Jesus tells him that in his weaknesses, he is strong because God’s grace is his strength. Paul says to the Corinthians, “For Christ was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.”

Whatever opposition you are facing today; whatever may be your thorn in the flesh, never quit! You may feel your motivation and passion are burned out. But keep your eyes on Jesus and rest in the grace of God. Jesus told Paul that God’s grace was enough to get him through. Grace is God’s doing! Grace is your fuel! Grace is the anointing that always breaks the yoke.

Paul persevered and continued to pastor, teach and lead, not by his own strength, but by the empowerment of God’s grace.

God-tracking is running on empty by God’s grace.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

Help me to be strong in your strength. Help me to face this criticism with integrity and grace.

“O Lord I feel completely rundown. I have no energy, no passion and no motivation to do anything. I want to give up but instead, I choose to look up and surrender to you. I give over to your grace. Your grace is my power and my fuel. I feel so weak, but I know that my human strength can never be enough to fulfil your plans for my life; only your grace is enough. Help me to be strong in your strength. Help me to face this criticism with integrity and grace. In you, I will continue. I will persevere. You are my source and my resource. Amen.”

“Signs and wonders by the Holy Spirit follow the preaching of God’s Word. So, open your heart to the flow of the manifest acts of the Holy Spirit through the solid aqueduct of God’s Word.”

Zachariah 4:6
So he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty.

“Some Christians neglect the word and seek only the subjective experience,” said John Morgan, a Confederate Cavalry officer in the American Civil War. Comparing the Christian life to an ancient Roman aqueduct he said that just as those stone waterways brought water from nearby mountains into parched cities, so the objective word of God channels the flow of the subjective experience of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Morgan added, “Without the solid Word of God to contain and channel that experience, the experience itself drains away into error and is lost. However, other Christians boast well-engineered aqueducts based on extensive knowledge of the Bible, but they are bone dry.” I always say that the Word without the Spirit is nothing more than theoretical theology; the Spirit without the Word tends to Christian mysticism but the Word and the Spirit is Emmanuel – God with us.

The Bible is a compilation of 66 writings, written over a period of about 1,500 years by many people who received visions and revelation from the Holy Spirit. The whole Bible is wholly inspired by the Spirit of God and has been supernaturally preserved through millennia until today. The Bible, God’s Word, reveals his principles (that is doctrines), his purposes (that is promises) and his precedent (that is processes). Therefore, the word confirms the actions of the Spirit while the Spirit activates the word.

The Holy Spirit is God. He is the presence and the person of God living and moving with us on earth, today. The Holy Spirit was promised by Jesus and poured out on all flesh on the first day of Pentecost after Calvary. The Spirit works miracles and manifests his gifts in the Church still today. (God never changes. How he behaved and worked in Bible times he still behaves and works today.) The Holy Spirit works together with the writings of the Bible to bring it to life.

As God-trackers then, we are called to base our life’s track on not just the objective written Bible or just the subjective acts of the Spirit but upon both word & spirit. The word and the Spirit are synonymous. Therefore, we need to be sure that we don’t exclude either the theology of Scripture or the manifestations of the Holy Spirit from our lives. The sword of the Spirit is the word of God! Signs and wonders by the Holy Spirit follow the preaching of God’s Word. So, open your heart to the flow of the manifest acts of the Holy Spirit through the solid aqueduct of God’s Word.

God-tracking is living by Word & Spirit.

Help me to test everything by your Word and hold onto that which is good and true.

“Dear God I want to thank you for your Word and your Holy Spirit. Thank you that the Bible confirms that the Holy Spirit has equipped us with supernatural gifts for life and living. I submit my life to the working of both your Spirit and your Word. Help me to read your Word and when I do, help me, by the Holy Spirit, to apply it in my life. Help me to test everything – every manifestation of the Spirit – by your Word and hold onto that which is good and true. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

“We need to hone the skill of listening with our hearts as we read the Bible, interpret circumstances and decipher well-meaning advice.”

John 10:27
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

You know, the hardest part of following God’s will is learning to hear his so-called, “still small voice”. Ever since I began understanding the ways of God, I have been taught that God seldom speaks through the obvious, he speaks through a gentle whisper.

God once told the prophet Elijah that he was going to reveal himself to him. So, he told Elijah to wait on a mountain top and he would pass by. A violent wind came then an earthquake and then a fire but these did not reveal God. Eventually, a still whisper came, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

I believe that the objects of the universe reflect the nature and purposes of the Creator. For instance, God created our hearing mechanism in two parts: the outer ear and the inner ear. The outer ear funnels sound waves toward the eardrum, which separates the two parts of the ear. The eardrum, in turn, turns the external vibrations into internal vibrations, which are detected by our inner ear. Voila, we hear! You see, ultimately, it is the inner ear that turns a whisper into a word.

In following the will of God, we need to hear his word. However, what makes things complicated is the fact that the Holy Spirit’s “still small voice” is totally inaudible to the natural ear. Therefore, we need to hone the skill of listening with our hearts as we read the Bible, interpret circumstances and decipher well-meaning advice. As Billy Graham
said, “The word of God hidden in the heart is a stubborn voice to suppress.”

To discern that still small voice you need to learn to funnel the wind, the earthquake, the fire and the whisper into the inner part – your spirit. To track the plans and purposes of God for your life, you need to listen with your inner ear.

God-tracking is listening with your inner ear.

So, don’t give up, look up & pray!

“Help me to understand you and to hear that still small voice of your Spirit.”

“Father God, thank you for sending Jesus to speak into our world as the Word of God. I rejoice too, dear Jesus, that you know me personally. I affirm that I have opened my heart’s ear – my “inner ear” – to your voice and confess Jesus Christ to be my personal Lord and God. I choose, therefore, to listen to the voice of Christ as my shepherd and follow his lead. Help me, O God, to interpret your word to me in whichever form it comes. Help me to understand you and to hear that still small voice of your Spirit. Today I choose to follow your lead. Amen.”
