It’s only by the steady infilling of the Holy Spirit that you and I will maintain a good oil supply for our lamps.”

Matthew 25:3
Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them

The cabin had no electricity so Joe lit an oil lamp and placed it on a wooden table. The glow of its warm
light filled the room. Joe sat back in a cushioned chair and enjoyed its comfort. However, what Joe did not realise was how quickly the oil would burn. Soon the glow of the lamp dwindled and dark shadows crept in from every corner. Oblivious to the dwindling oil supply, Joe allowed the lamp to continue burning. Soon the room was enveloped in darkness. Striking a match, Joe examined his lamp only to find that, not only had the oil been consumed, but the wick had also burned out. With no fuel supply, the flame had consumed the wick.

How is your fuel supply? Is your fuel tank full or running dry? Beware burnout! The world we live in is relentless. Demands coming from every side and labour intensifying will soon burn you out. Burnout is a serious and overwhelming issue in this pacy twenty-first-century world, within the church and outside its confines. There are two major forms of burnout: physical burnout and emotional burnout. Both will strip you bear. Unless you maintain a steady oil supply for your lamp, your wick will soon burn out.

There is an old gospel chorus that goes, “Give me oil in my lamp, keeping burning, burning, burning.” The Holy Spirit is likened to oil in Scripture. It’s only by the steady infilling of the Holy Spirit that you and I will maintain a good oil supply for our lamps. So come to Jesus when the burdens of life overwhelm you. Yoke up with him under that heavy load. Cast your cares on him because he cares for you. If you rely on your power and might you will burn out.

God-tracking is avoiding burnout.

So, don’t give up, look up & pray!

“Thank you that you are by my side, helping me stay burning.”

“Dear Lord, I’ve allowed my wick to burn without fuel. Forgive me for not drawing on your source of power and might. Holy Spirit, fill me again; fuel my wick with your oil. I pray for healing of burnout in soul and mind. I cast my cares upon you, O Lord, in the name of Jesus. I come to you now and take up your yoke because your yoke is easy and your burden is light. Thank you that you are by my side, helping me stay burning. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS BEING SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE ONLY BY THE BLESSING OF THE LORD

Proverbs 10:22
The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it

One morning R. C. Chapman, known as the apostle of love, was asked how he was feeling. "I'm burdened this morning!" said Chapman. But his happy smile contradicted his words. So, the questioner exclaimed in surprise, "Are you really burdened, Mr. Chapman?" He replied, "Yes, but it's a wonderful burden. It's an overabundance of blessings for which I cannot find enough time or words to express my gratitude!" Seeing the quizzical look on his friend’s face, Chapman added with a smile, "I am referring to Psalm 68:19, which fully describes my condition. In that verse, the Father in heaven reminds us that He 'daily loads us with benefits.'"

Everybody faces down days from time to time. I had one, the other day. For no reason at all, in the middle of the day, I began feeling completely unmotivated and miserable (yes, even pastors have down days). I had no major issues at the office and the family was good, but somehow, I just wanted to shut down and sleep. Just the thought of writing another word or answering the next call became a mountain I dreaded to climb. Probably a lying attack from Satan, but I began questioning my levels of success and achievement. I went to bed that night wondering why I do what I do.

The next morning, I dragged myself to my normal spot where I read and pray. Still pondering the feelings of the day before a scripture came to mind. Through the haze of self-doubt and self-pity I sensed the Holy Spirit say, “I am your source and your resource. It’s not your effort that wins the day, for the blessing of the Lord brings riches, and he adds no sorrow to it.” Instantly I realised that, no matter how hard I labour; no matter how much enthusiasm I attempt muster to do the job, without God’s blessing it will come to nought.

Success is the consequence of God’s blessing. The blessing of the Lord is your source of joy, purpose and accomplishments. Seeking the blessing of God means seeking his favour, his motivation and his drive for all you do. The blessing of the Lord is his endorsement – his signature – at the bottom of the contract saying, “This work is done in my Name!” The blessing of the Lord relieves you from the responsibility of striving for achievement, because the blessing of the Lord is powered by God’s sufficient grace. And grace is God’s doing! So, let’s stand back and agree with R. C. Chapman today, blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

I give you glory for all my successes, because they are fuelled by your blessing, alone

“O Lord, thank you for your grace. Grace is your unmerited favour! Grace powers your blessings and I thank you that you load me with benefits, because of the saving work of Jesus Christ. Today I therefore, seek your blessing on everything I do: I seek your blessing on my work; I seek your blessing on my ministry; I seek your blessing on my family and my marriage and I seek your blessing on every relationship in my life. It is your blessing that will cause success in my life. I give you glory for all my successes, because they are fuelled by your blessing, alone. Amen.

GOD-TRACKING IS RESTING CONTENTED, AT THE TABLE OF THE LORD

Psalm 23:5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies… my cup overflows.

Are you stressed out? Does it feel like your cup is running low? Stress has a way of turning any reasonable person into a bear with a sore head. Sometimes workloads overwhelm us to the extent that we feel like we’re an expanding balloon being pumped up until… pop! One symptom of stress is fatigue. Fatigue has a way of dragging one so low that he can hardly lift his head off the pillow in the morning. But I suggest, stressed is nothing more than desserts, spelled backwards.

I love to sit down to a good full course meal with my lovely wife. And a good dinner can never be rushed. A well matured steak needs to be eaten slowly. I do enjoy a hearty dinner. However, my favourite part of the whole meal has to be the dessert. After a pleasant starter and a full main course, I may feel too full to eat any more, but there’s always room for dessert.

A Scripture that has always alleviated my stress levels is Psalm 23. It reminds me that the Lord, whose name is Jehovah Rohi, is my shepherd. That is, Lord Jesus, the Good Shepherd, laid his life down under the most intense stressful conditions anyone could ever imagine, only to bring me peace. Through Jesus, Jehovah Rohi has prepared a table for me in the presence of my enemies.

Today, if you feel stress is your enemy, I suggest you sit down at God’s table, laden with wonderful desserts, and allow him to fill your cup to overflowing.

God-tracking is resting contented, at the table of the Lord.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

My life is overwhelming; Lord, fill me up to overflowing!

“My Lord and God, you are called Jehovah Rohi – the LORD my Shepherd. Today I need your shepherding. I feel like I’m a sheep gone astray and need to find my way back to your table of peace. I’m stressed out and tired. I feel as though I’ve run low on fuel and need to be refilled. My life is overwhelming; Lord, fill me up to overflowing! I rest at the table you have prepared for me in the presence of my enemies. Lord, turn my “stressed” moments into lavish “desserts,” by your grace. Thank your meeting my needs and thank you for relieving my burdens. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS REFUELLING YOUR TANKS THROUGH PRAYER

Psalm 23:3
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

A wick in an oil lamp will shine brightly for as long as it is fuelled by oil. If the oil is not topped up, you will notice the wick itself beginning to burn and smoulder. Soon the effect of light given out by the oil lamp begins to fade and wick eventually turns to ash, no longer of any use. So it is with any soul who burns vibrantly for the purposes of God without replenishing their fuel.

The Bible is packed with references pointing to the need for rest and replenishment. For instance, Jesus himself frequently drew away from the crowds to be alone with the Father in prayer. Notice how he spent time alone with God the Father to refill his oil pot. It was in the stillness of submission to God that the Son of Man restored his strength and purpose.

The presence of God in prayer is your fuel reserve. If you find yourself burning the candle at both ends, it may be time to draw away in prayer to rest. It’s in prayer that we are told to present our anxieties to the Lord with thanksgiving. It’s in prayer that we restore a peace that passes understanding. And it’s through pray that we cast our cares on the Lord. Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” How else do we come to Jesus, but in prayer?

Thank you for refuelling my tanks. In you I rest

“Oh Lord, I’m tired! I’ve had a time of it and I feel I just can’t go on. So, I choose to come to you in prayer and cast my cares upon you. I’m heavy laden, O Lord, give me rest. I confess that you are my source and my resource – the source of my strength and the resource for my purpose. Give me wisdom to deal with my workload and responsibilities. Thank you for your peace. Thank you for your replenishment. Thank you for refuelling my tanks. In you I rest. Amen”
