REAPING WITH JOY

“If we selfishly hang onto our resources we will indeed, lose them. What we surrender to God, he multiplies back to us, pressed down, shaken together and running over.”

Psalm 126:5
Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!

Two quotes from my collection of quotes for you today: “I have tried to keep things in my hands and lost them all, but what I have given into God's hands I still possess,” Martin Luther. And “If you give what you do not need, it isn't giving,” Mother Teresa.

My wife and I visited Israel a few years back. Near the end of our time there we visited a farm near the Dead Sea in the Negev desert. Water is a treasured commodity in this part of the world. Our guide said, “This part of Israel is very arid. Every year we sow our crops in the hope of reaping a harvest. If it doesn’t rain, we are fortunate today to have irrigation. In ancient times they had no irrigation. They would sow very valuable seed, which could feed their families for months, into the dry earth. It was hard to throw away good food. So, they would sow in tears and hope to reap with shouts of joy. God was always faithful.”

Sometimes I feel a little like that when I give my well-earned cash toward God’s work or to a needy cause. It’s hard to give away good money when you know you have needs of your own. Yet, as Christian believers, when we give, we give to God. God does not need our money but money is needed for God’s work. I love what Martin Luther said about giving. If we selfishly hang onto our resources we will indeed, lose them. What we surrender to God, he multiplies back to us, pressed down, shaken together and running over.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

Thank you, dear Father, for your faithfulness to me. Help me be faithful in my giving.

“Dear Lord, I praise you that YOU are my source of living. You have always met my needs in life. I trust you to continue meeting my needs according to your riches in glory. Today, I want to make a firm recommitment to sow into your kingdom. I don’t have much to give but I know that if a give cheerfully with a pure heart you will reward my giving. You who promised, are faithful. Thank you, dear Father, for your faithfulness to me. Help me be faithful in my giving. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS GIVING WITH THE RIGHT HEART

GodTracker 737The e-devotional helping to keep you on track with God’s plans for your life.

“For the Christian, giving needs to be an open and honest act; not done to impress others but done cheerfully, with the motive of giving rather than receiving.”

Psalm 37:25I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.

Devotional books by Dudley Anderson
Giving has always been a contentious issue among Christians. Some people believe that when we give, we should never expect anything in return. Others say that giving is a means to gain personal wealth. Which is it?

Jesus advocated giving. Firstly, he endorsed the paying of tithes with the account of the poor widow’s mite. He was sitting opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Secondly, he said things like, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Elsewhere we read of how Paul was in need and the Philippian folks gave generously to meet his budget. Of their gifts, Paul writes, “They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.” Writing to the Corinthians he says, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. God loves a cheerful giver.” And God always blesses the one he loves. (Remember, though Paul writes these words, they were inspired by the Holy Spirit – all Scripture is God-breathed.)

God loves the act of giving because God is a giver. Notice what the Scripture says in Philippians 4 verse 19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Likewise, Jesus implies that the giver, with the right heart motive, will be profusely blessed in return.
For the Christian, giving needs to be an open and honest act; not done to impress others but done cheerfully, with the motive of giving rather than receiving. Thus done, our God of abundance, who is true to his word, will never see the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread!

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

Lord, you – and only you – are my source and my resource. I choose to give, believing that I can never out-give your provision in my life.

“Lord my God, I believe that giving to the needs of others, to the work of Christian ministry and tithing to my church are true and applicable biblical principles. Forgive me if I have ever given with the wrong motive – either to impress others or for selfish gain. I believe that, if I give cheerfully, open-handed and open-hearted, then I will receive your blessings, pressed down, shaken together and running over. Lord, you – and only you – are my source and my resource. I choose to give, believing that I can never out-give your provision in my life. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS BEING A FAITHFUL AND A CHEERFUL GIVER

Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

“God has promised to meet all our needs according to his riches in Christ Jesus. If you know Jesus as Lord, then you are in Christ Jesus. If you are in Christ Jesus, you are found in the same place as the riches of God!”

By the grace of God, since receiving our first pay cheques, Karen and I have tithed. At times it was tough… very tough! I remember when I was studying for the ministry and had no regular income. I was 30 at the time with 2 small children to care for. Between us, Karen and I had 9 part-time jobs. Our income was low, but we believed it was still necessary to tithe. God was faithful to his promise to meet all our needs.

One Sunday evening, back in South Africa during my days at Bible school, I was at church leading worship while Karen and the kids were at home. My son Ryan, about 5 at the time, loved performing gymnastic feats. That evening he ran into his bedroom and somersaulted onto his bed. His feet promptly crashed through a large window. Thankfully, the curtains were closed so he did not hurt himself. “Ryan, what have you done!” came the cry from his mom. “It’ll take 200 rand to fix that window!” A few minutes later Karen heard Ryan and his sister, Kerryn praying, “Dear Lord, sorry Ry broke the window. Please give mom R200 to fix it.”

After church, while I was packing away my guitar, someone handed me an envelope. “Thanks,” I muttered and promptly popped it into my pocket. When I arrived home and Karen told me what had happened, I remembered envelope in my pocket. Opening it I found ten R20 notes. He who promised was faithful.

God has called us to be cheerful givers. God has promised that if we sow bountifully we will also reap bountifully. You see, God has promised to meet all our needs according to his riches in Christ Jesus. If you know Jesus as Lord, then you are in Christ Jesus. If you are in Christ Jesus, you are found in the same place as the riches of God! So, be faithful in your giving as you seek to track his will for your life.

God-tracking is being a faithful and a cheerful giver.

I commit my life and calling to you. Help me to track your will, every day.

“O Lord, thank you so much for your faithful blessings and provision in my life. Thank you that you meet all my needs according to your abundance in Jesus. Thank you that, as you help me to be faithful in my giving, you are faithful in pouring out your blessings into my lap, pressed down, shaken together and running over. Today I choose to be faithful and cheerful in my giving as I trust you to be faithful to your promises to meet my needs. Amen.”
