Stop Cluttering the Prayer-Waves With Clanging & Banging and Submissively Listen to God’s Heart

Prayer is a two way street: us talking to God and God talking to us. Sometimes, however, we forget this and end up making so much noise with our petitions and requests that we don’t hear what the Holy Spirit is trying to say to us. It’s like asking a passerby for directions to the bus stop without giving him a moment answer in before we say goodbye and move off on our blissfully ignorant way, none the wiser.

I once gave a demonstration of how God’s experience of some of our prayer times may be. I asked our church drummer to climb behind his kit and perform his best drum solo while I tried to read a Psalm to the people. Of course, as you can well imagine, the congregation heard none of what I was saying, because the noise behind me was too great! Sometimes our words are just like clanging cymbals and banging drums. We often just make a big noise in prayer and not truly seek God’s heart in our situations. And then we often assume to speak for God, too. We tend to believe that we have heard his word when in fact all we have heard are our own opinions! 

Dear God Tracker, as we seek to track God’s plans for our lives let us keep our eyes on Jesus and our spiritual ears open to what he is saying to us in prayer. Often the Holy Spirit will rest a gentle impression in our hearts or open the scriptures to us during prayer but to hear these words, we need to be still and know that he is God. (By the way, being still does not necessarily mean being quiet but it does mean ceasing from all human effort to attain God’s will.) So, let’s submit to his will and get out from under his feet and into his hands. Let us stop assuming that God has spoken when in fact he is silent and let us stop blaming God for being silent when in fact it is we who are not listening. Let’s stop cluttering the prayer-waves with clanging and banging and submissively listen to God’s heart.

Righteousness Is Credited Only By Faith In The Heart

One of my favourite heroes of the faith is the great ancient king of Israel, King David. I love David because he was an average guy with average problems who discovered the secret of faithfully keeping his heart pure before God, by God’s grace.

David was the youngest son of an average Hebrew guy called, Jesse and a shepherd of his father’s sheep.  Being a shepherd in the Middle East was a very humble job. Nevertheless, we read how David did his job to the best of his ability, even risking his own life for the sheep. However, David was soon to shepherd his people as the greatest king his people would ever know but not before singlehandedly defeating Israel’s enemy with one swipe.

Yet, as we read David’s story we notice that he was less than a perfect guy. Becoming a great warrior-king meant that he was responsible for the deaths of many people through the act of war. Also, on one occasion we read that David fell in love with another man’s wife and married her, after sending her husband to his death on the front line. David committed adultery and murder! But yet, we also read in 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22 that David was called, “A man after God’s own heart.” In fact, it is from David that we received the Messiah and saviour of the world.

As a God Tracker, I believe that God looks at the heart and not the hands. In other words, I believe that salvation is realised in the heart before it plays out through the hands. Faith and grace are qualities experienced in the heart when we believe that Jesus died and rose again to free us from sin. Even so, Jesus said that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak. Consequently, because grace and faith in the heart have made us right with God, the hands (or mouth, as the case may be) will reveal this salvation through actions of faith. But these actions of faith do not justify or qualify us before God. We are not saved by our works but by faith in Christ’s actions. Yet as we live out our salvation by what we do, we discover that there is always something more that can be done. That is to say, we can never, never do enough to earn credit for righteousness by the work of our hands; righteousness is credited only by faith in the heart.

David was a true God-tracker. David lived in grace. David walked by faith. David was not a perfect guy but David’s heart was right and he knew the power of repentance. David knew that he was nothing, had nothing and meant nothing but for the grace of God. David was made righteous by faith in God’s forgiveness and walked in the integrity of the hope of his salvation. He knew that purity of heart precedes purity of hand.

God-tracking is firstly getting your heart right with God.

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus and Your Nose in the Bible

If you search for the word, “salvation" in Google, it will return to you no less that 130,000,000 hits. Opening some of these sites you will find everything from a computer game called, The Wheels of Salvation to deep and meaningful exegeses of the possibility of losing your salvation. The Internet is a very powerful resource and reference library but it is also the source of some of the most diabolical heresy known to man. Yikes! However, the vast majority of the sites I tested were wholesome and Bible based. But please beware of basing your Christian walk upon everything you find in Google, YouTube or Facebook.

The Bible is the most remarkable volume of writings ever compiled. Its history spans a period of more than 4,000 years. Its books were penned by 40 different authors over 1,400 years. Its content is historic, poetic, prophetic and inspirational. No one man or one group or religious denomination ever collated this cannon of writings by their own biased opinion and yet these 66 books came together in the most remarkable and agreeable fashion. The Bible is still the world’s number one selling book. It tops the best seller lists every year. Nothing beats it! World sales of the Bible are more than 100 million every year. Simply by virtue of the fact that I can hold these ancient writings in my hands today, almost 5,500 years after the first book was penned, proves its supernatural origin and propagation. However, the single most profound proof that these 66 writings are the word of God is the fact that every one of them – penned so many years apart – agrees with the other and carries one central theme, the salvation of mankind.

The Bible is God’s inspired word to us. The Bible is the source of the knowledge of God’s plan for our salvation from sin and his plan for our continued walk with him. The Bible does not stand alone, because the real living Holy Spirit, who inspired its writing, compilation and preservation, quickens it to our hearts and lives today. The only true revelation of salvation and purpose is found within the pages of the Bible. Many, many well-meaning individuals have written libraries of commentaries on the Bible (including those on the Internet) but the only complete source of God’s true and inspired word to us is found within the pages of just this one book.

So then dear God Tracker, as you seek to track and stay on-track with God’s salvation and his plans and purposes for your life, let me encourage you to keep your eyes on Jesus and your nose in the Bible.

Religion is a Burden of “Dos” and “Don’ts” but Reconciled Relationship Brings Rest

What is Christian practice? Is it being kind to your neighbour? Is it dutifully reading the Bible, praying every day and paying your tithes? Is Christian practice religiously attending church Sunday after Sunday? And when a Christian fails at one or more of these practices, does that leave him feeling that he has let God down and that he is any less of a Christian than the guy on the pew next to him? The author, Rick Marschall once said, “It is my observation that when Christians feel they have let God down, it is usually not because of some grievous sin, but more often a feeling that… we have not put into practice what we know to be the truth.”

I know I might offend some people when I say that the saddest word that I know to describe the Christian walk is the word religion. I remember during the 1970s when I became a Christian people around me were talking about people like me as, “having found religion,” or “becoming religious.” But, to me, becoming a Christian means entering into right relationship with God. Whereas being religious implies asserting human effort in attempting to follow and implement rules and regulations of a belief system. This means that one man can be more religious than another, if he practices more closely the tenets of his religion than the guy on the pew next to him. Jesus faced people like this in the teachers of the law of his time. In Matthew 23:27-28 he says, “"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” Religion is practiced on the outside but reconciled relationship is practiced on the inside.

If you feel as though you have let God down it may be because you have not put into practice what you know to be true. This could be because, like me, are trying to practice religion on the outside without first coming into right relationship with the Lord God on the inside. Jesus Christ was many things but religious, he was not. Come to him today and learn from him in that he was humble and gentle. Yoke up with Christ and you will find his burden is light. Religion is a burden of “dos” and “don’ts” but reconciled relationship brings rest.
