Jim Elliot was born in Portland, Oregon in 1927. He grew to be a strapping gifted young man. Jim was a talented sports man and actor. While studying architecture at school, his teachers encouraged him to follow a career in acting, as he was a brilliant orator. Jim Elliot was also a Christian. Acknowledging God in all his ways, Elliot sought to track the plans and purposes of God.

At the tender age of 24 Jim Elliot heard the call of God to become a missionary and to help evangelise an unreached tribe in Ecuador. In his journal for 28^th October 1949, Elliot wrote that he believed, work dedicated to Jesus was more important than his very life. Quoting the words of Jesus he wrote, "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.” Then added, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” In February 1952 Jim and 4 friends left the shores of America never to return. On 8^th January 1956 Jim Elliot and his 4 companions were martyred by a group of about 10 Huaorani warriors.

Thankfully, I have not (and pray I never will) experienced anything near the plight of these 5 heroes of the faith, in my attempt to seek and track the plans and purposes of God. However, I have experienced emotional hardship and intense resistance to the call of God on my life. But God has always brought me through to a place of peace and security. Author, Elisabeth Elliot said, “The will of God is never exactly what you expect it to be. It may seem to be much worse, but in the end, it's going to be a lot better and a lot bigger.” I have personally discovered that walking in the will of God is always a place of secure peace, but not always a comfortable place to be. Ask Jim Elliot, better yet, ask Jesus.

When God calls you, he’ll watch over his calling in your life to fulfil it. You see, it’s not your ministry, it’s his ministry; it’s not your calling, it’s his calling, and he will watch over his calling to perform it. The Lord your God is faithful, and his love endures forever. He is your source and your resource. The Lord is your refuge and fortress, your God, whom you can trust. Your heart can be glad, and your whole being can rejoice, because in him you can dwell secure. Indeed, he is at your right hand, you shall not be shaken.

Therefore, dear God Tracker, acknowledge the Lord in all your ways and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Rest in the knowledge that he is watching over his Word to perform it in your life. Then, whatever calamity may come your way, when living in the will of God, you can be sure of peace and security.

“Do not allow popular opinion to undermine God’s plans for you. He is your source and your resource. You will make it.”

 One day Monkey called all the animals in the forest to the great oak tree. “I’m sure you’ll all agree,”
said Monkey to the crowd, “monkeys are the greatest when it comes to tree climbing, but frogs are so small and slimy, they are terrible at climbing trees.” He then challenged all the frogs to race up the oak. The first one to the top will be declared king of the forest. Monkey had confidence all the frogs would fail to make it to the top of the tree. The humble group assembled at the base of the tree and began to climb its mighty trunk. “They’ll never make it,” shouted Monkey! “No, they won’t,” called fox, “they’re all to small and slimy.” Eventually all the other animals joined in, mocking the frogs and discouraging them in their exploit.

One by one the little frogs began to fall to the ground. Some had hardly taken and few steps when the ridicule of the crowd so discouraged them that they simply gave up. Eventually, there were only four brave frogs left climbing the great oak tree. By now they were halfway up its trunk. The jeers and scorns of the crowd continued, “They’ll never make it! They’re too small! They’re too weak, too slimy!” On it went until eventually two of the remaining frogs just gave up and slid down the tree trunk. The remaining two battled and battled against the steep effort of the climb and the intense discouragement from below. Almost at the top one of the last two frogs stopped. “That’s it, he’s finished,” yelled Monkey! With that, the little frog gave up and allowed himself to slip down to the earth below. Only one little frog remained. He kept going, step by step, slow but steady. “You’ll never make it,” called someone below. The crowd joined in calling for his failure. Finally, the brave little guy victoriously reached the top of the tree. He’d made it, despite the ridicule and discouragement. The crowd was silent. No one believed he’d make it. Some asked, how did he do it? Why did he succeed, and the others fail? Owl answered, “Because he is deaf.”

A short time after leaving Egypt, the Israelites came to the border of Canaan. The Lord said to Moses, “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel.” So, Moses sent out 12 spies, one from each tribe of Israel. They returned with the report, “The land is a land that flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. But, all the people that we saw in it are of great height. We seemed like grasshoppers in their sight.” Only two spies gave a positive report, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Caleb and Joshua were the only two men of that entire generation who eventually entered the Promised Land to eat of its fruit.

If you’re facing a great climb today hear this: you will make it! Be deaf to the discouragements and negative words around you. Listen only to God’s Word. God said to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Your God is with you. Do not allow popular opinion to undermine God’s plans for you. He is your source and your resource. You will make it! And, when you pass through the waters, he will be with you, they shall not overwhelm you. When you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For he is the Lord your God.

 Hebrews 12:2-3Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

“No matter what the devil throws at you; no matter how circumstances may bend in the process, know that your God is faithful, and he is quick to deliver you.”

My blood ran cold as my wife relayed the message to me that she’d just received from my daughter-in-law, “Ruben has been rushed to hospital with a temperature in excess of 39 degrees Celsius!” Our first grandson had taken our lives by storm; I wasn’t going to sit back and allow the devil to take his life from him. Karen and I rushed to the hospital and, together with my son and his wife we laid hands on his little body, claiming God’s healing Word. At that moment I just knew Ruben would be alright. However, the next day when we arrived to visit him, we found his parents outside the ward, in tears. Little Ruben had deteriorated through the night and at one point, stopped breathing. Medics resuscitated him and then rushed him to intensive care. Yet, with hundreds of people praying for him around the world, I just knew he would be alright.

After only 24 hours in ICU Ruben was discharged back to his ward. Several tests were done but the doctors found nothing wrong with him! A day later he was home. By God’s grace and comfort, the family had pressed in and taken God at his Word.

Oswald Chambers said, “We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.” Could be you’re facing a crisis right now, as my family did that time. Let me encourage you to not look at your problem when you pray but look through it with your eyes set on Christ. God’s word is jam-packed with promise and hope. Receive his word and walk in the hope it offers. You see, the Lord is already on the other side of your difficulty making way for you to get there. No matter what the devil throws at you; no matter how circumstances may bend in the process, know that your God is faithful, and he is quick to deliver you.

 “Dear Lord, I just feel as though I can’t go on any more. It seems as though this problem has consumed me. But dear Lord I know that you know what I’m going through today. Help me to hold on to your promises and the hope your words offer me. Help me to track your path until I eventually get to the other side of my worries. I cast my anxieties on you right now! Lord forgive me for my doubts. I thank you that you will meet my need and help me get over this mountain. I fix my eyes on Jesus and not my problem by presenting my prayer to you with thanksgiving, O God. Thank you for answering my call. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Isaiah 43:19

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

“God’s word to you today, dear God Tracker is, God knows the plans he has for you and he is saving the best till last.”

“This is the Jordan river,” said Jan as she laid out a fine linen fabric across the length of the church in front of the podium. Jan had been invited as a guest speaker to our church. She is a gentle soul with a warm gentle demeanour. “Now, if you feel led by the Holy Spirit, please come forward and step over your Jordan River. Just like Joshua and the people of God when they crossed into the Promised Land, cross over today into God’s new purposes for you. He has a plan for you and he is doing a new thing. This is a new day. The point of no return.”

The first recorded miracle that Jesus performed was at a wedding in the town of Cana. Here he turned 35 litres of water into the finest wine, because the wedding hosts had run short of the beverage. The festivities had probably been going on for days. When the master of the feast tasted the new wine he said, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” The new wine that Jesus had produced was far superior to the wine made by human hands. The miraculous provision of God had saved the best for last.

God’s word to you today, dear God Tracker is, God knows the plans he has for you and he is saving the best till last. He is doing a new thing through his miraculous provision and guidance. You may think you have run out of resources, but he is your source and your resource; he who promised is faithful and he will do it. However, the new wine that Jesus gives needs to be stored in a new wineskin. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to leave the old land behind and step over that river, without looking back. Perhaps this is the point of no return! Only acknowledge the Lord in all your ways and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.

ANCIENT PATHS NEW BEGINNINGS

Strengthen What Remains

 “The Lord is calling you and me, Christian, to wake up and strengthen what remains; to strengthen our faith, to strengthen our worship, to strengthen our understanding of his Word and to strengthen our standing for godly morals in a corrupt society.”

“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls,” declared Jeremiah the prophet from the steps of the temple in Jerusalem.

Judah had been invaded by the Babylonians who had taking the first wave of exiles to the shores of the Euphrates. Jerusalem’s streets were silenced of children’s laughter. Markets were empty. Jeremiah’s people had abandoned their worship of Yahweh, bowing to graven foreign images. The result? God’s judgement. “Ah, Adonai,” the prophet may have groaned inwardly, “my people have digressed from the ancient path of faith in the one true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and have bowed to false idols made by human hand.” Judah was at the crossroads. They stood facing a choice between returning to the ancient path of God’s law or continue to walk the bypaths and side roads of false ways. Perhaps in his heart the prophet sighed, there is still time for the remnant to repent and return to the paths of truth. But they won’t have it!

“But you said, `We will not walk in it.' Hear, O earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law,” (Jeremiah 6:16-19).

Abandon Popular Opinion

Jeremiah’s ancient paths called for the people of God to abandon popular opinion of the time and return to the ancient paths of the God’s law. This law was founded in faith; the faith of Abraham, who had obediently believed God. Abraham had heard the Word of God and simply put his faith in God’s promises. His act of faith had justified him before Al Shaddai. Jeremiah was calling the children of Abraham to return to simple faith in the one true God and to obey his Word.

Jesus, the Ancient Path

Hundreds of years later God sent John the Baptist with the same message. John may have stood at the same spot that Jeremiah had stood as he declared, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire,” (Matthew 3:1-11). John was preparing the way of the coming of Messiah. Jesus soon arrived, proclaiming the Kingdom of God. He is called the Word of God. The Word brought salvation by faith, to all mankind. Faith comes from hearing the unadulterated unequivocal message of Christ. Heaven and earth may pass away, but God’s ancient Word endures forever. Jesus, the Word of God, is the Ancient Path.

However, sadly, as in Jeremiah’s day, through the ages, Christ’s ancient message of faith became corrupted by popular opinion. For centuries, learned men have evolved the simple message of faith in God through Christ, by adding their convoluted popular opinions and subtracting basic truths from the purity of God’s Word. They have said, “We will not walk in it.” Today, in this postmodern 21^st century so-called tolerant and liberal society, the road signs of Christian moral ethics and the biblical absolutes have been so blurred by popular opinion that we have lost sight of the Ancient Path.

Wake Up and Strengthen

Jesus appeared to the apostle John almost 70 years after he ascended to heaven. He gave John a great revelation of the end times in preparation of his return. (And Jesus is returning, soon!) At the start of his revelation, Jesus gave John instructions to the seven prominent churches of Asia Minor. To the church in Sardis he said, “These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent,” (Revelation 3:1-3).

New Beginnings!

But there is hope! As Jeremiah called out to his people from the steps of the temple of God, he offered them hope for prosperity if they returned to the ancient paths of God’s uncompromised Word. He said, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope,’” (Jeremiah 29:11). Just so, God is calling us to stand at the crossroads and ask for the ancient paths of faith, obedience, and uncompromised Word and Spirit.

The Lord is calling you and me, Christian, to wake up and strengthen what remains; to strengthen our faith, to strengthen our worship, to strengthen our understanding of his Word and to strengthen our standing for godly morals in a corrupt society. The Lord has a plan for you; a plan to prosper you, a plan to give you a future filled with hope. I don’t think our God is a God of second chances, I believe he is the God of new beginnings! The Lord is doing a new thing in his Church today. God is making a new way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. God is opening a new way for the followers of Christ to seek his ancient paths. Only, strengthen what remains!

In his great sovereignty and grace, God has chosen to give you the most mysterious and auspicious privilege of prayer. Use it!

John 15:16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

I was thinking about prayer the other day. To me, prayer is the most mysterious and auspicious privilege we have as Christians. How it is that my humble words can move the hand of Almighty Creator, I’ll never fully grasp, yet they can. I believe it has something to do with God’s love. God is love and God loves to commune with his beloved. This happens in prayer.

As I pondered prayer I imagined prayer was like the great aqueducts that the Roman constructed to bring water from lakes and reservoirs into their cities. Now, rain falls where it chooses, so the rain could provide drinking water for Roman cities by falling directly on the city. Yet, the Romans also built aqueducts to carefully channel water into the cities to provide a constant supply for their residents. Just the same, God in his sovereignty, can and does meet our needs and guide our steps by his own will and initiative, like rain falling on the Roman cities. However, in his love, he has opened the way for you and me to be canals of his power through personal deliberate prayer, like the Roman aqueducts supplying the cities of their empire with water.

The prayer of a righteous man is powerful, and in Christ, we are righteous. And no good thing will he withhold from those who walk uprightly. Our God will meet all our needs according to his rich resources in Jesus. He is faithful, and his love is enduring. He will never let you down; he is with you always. In his great sovereignty and grace, God has chosen to give you the most mysterious and auspicious privilege of prayer. Use it!

Thank you that my prayer is like a canal, bringing the sustenance of your touch to those around me. Help me to wisely pray. Help me to fill my mind with your Word so that I will always pray according to your will. Help me to be diligent in prayer and to walk in faith that you will answer every prayer I utter. Dear Lord, help me to build my prayer life to please you and glorify your name. Amen.”

• In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved (Ephesians 1:4-6).
• …who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began (2 Timothy 1:9).

The central theme verse on which this devotional is based is taken from Jeremiah, which reads, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” However, I would like to point out that it is indeed, God who knows the plans he has for us, but we don’t; not until he reveals his plans to us, that is. Therefore, we need to faithfully seek and track God’s plans and purposes throughout our lives. Hence the term, God-tracking.

In 1997 I had an experience in which God revealed to me that his purposes will always hold true in my life, provided I continue to remain on track with his plans. His plans may often take me to places I would never have dreamt were meant for me, but God showed me that, provided I acknowledge him in all my ways and keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, he would always direct my life’s track. This calls for walking by faith and not by sight. You see, it’s not a fatalistic view on life, it’s a faith-realistic view on life. It’s not saying, “What will be will be,” but rather, “His will be done!”

If you live this way, you will always find yourself walking squarely in the middle of God’s will for your life, including through the most challenging places. Acknowledging God in every area of life will cause you to always make the right choices. And even if you happen to make a wrong choice, because you’ve acknowledged God, he will nevertheless, direct your path.

And that’s what God-tracking is all about.

God-tracking is knowing you’re in the right place.

“Dear Father God, I acknowledge you in every part of my life: in my work, in my play, in my church, in my finances, in my relationships, in my ambitions, in my hopes, in my desires, in my failures, in my successes and in the very place of life I find myself in today. And I choose to fix my eyes on Jesus, my example of a life of faith. I know you have a wonderful plan for me. I know you have a wonderful future for me, filled with hope and success. Therefore, I step out in faith and declare that, at this moment that I believe I am precisely where you want me to be in life, and I will track your plans and purposes every step of the way. Amen.”
