Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Jesus taught in a parable that the gospel is free to all who would respond to it. Sadly, however, not everyone who is invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb, responds to the invitation. In the parable, Jesus implies that those who are nominal believers ignore the true call to salvation, because they think they are privileged. Then he implies that those who are outside the fence of faith, readily respond to the call of salvation, because they have nothing to prove. By this I see that true faith in Christ is not as a result of privileged birth or religious upbringing; it is as a result of sincere a humble response to the call to repentance.

However, even of those who respond to the invitation to attend the wedding feast, some are refused entry. Much has been debated about choice, predestination and election in response to the gospel. I believe the key to this debate is found in the word, foreknow. Those whom God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son. You see, God is eternal and omniscient. He knows all things, past, present and future. Therefore, by God’s foreknowledge if you respond to the gospel by your choice today, you are saved. He knows who will and who won’t respond to the gospel, but we don’t. Therefore, by God’s grace, we have the option to choose. Faith comes by hearing the gospel. One can only make a choice on what he hears. Yet, what of those who are refused entry?

In this parable, Jesus said that there was one guest at the wedding feast who was not dressed for the occasion. He was repelled by the Master because he had taken undue advantage to call himself a wedding feast guest without true compliance. He was a fraud; an imposter. Sadly, the Church is packed with imposters.

Listen to God’s word: “Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.” I don’t know about you but when I get dressed up to attend a wedding feast, it’s a major ordeal. You see, I don’t often wear ties and it takes me ages to decide which one to put on. Yet, after a hard day’s work, I have a bath, remove my old work clothes and get smartly dressed for the occasion. The Scripture says: “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”

True response to the call of God unto salvation, by his foreknowledge, requires that we make the choice to change out of our attire of sin and dress up in Christ’s righteousness. True response to the call of God unto salvation requires that we heed the call to repent and be baptised and live the new life by faith in Jesus as new creations.

God-tracking is choosing to put on Christ.

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Joseph walked wearily beside the donkey bearing his lovely new wife as they entered Bethlehem. Mary was more than 9-months pregnant and on the verge of labour. Most of his family lived in Bethlehem but none offered him a room, even though his wife was about to give birth. You see, Mary had fallen pregnant outside of marriage. “They’d never understand,” Joseph whispered to himself as he knocked on the door of the last inn, in the main road. “The angel said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.’”

In the manger of that inn, Mary cradled her new-born in her arms, wondering, “Who is this child that shepherds and kings bow before him?” She marvelled at the way he was conceived. “Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus,” the angel had said to her

As he grew, Mary wondered at Jesus’ wisdom and grace. And then, when he turned 30, he began to proclaim the Kingdom of God. He taught, he fed and he healed the multitudes who followed him. Mary knew he was a special person – a prophet, even. But she was still unclear as to his final calling. “Why dear God, did I give birth to him? What is your purpose for my boy?”

Jesus said things like, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” And he said, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” Then he said, “I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”

Now, as Mary’s dried eyes gazed at her dear son, suspended between heaven and earth on a cross of wood; crucified for crimes he’d not committed, it all made sense. Her boy was born for one purpose: to innocently die to bear the consequence of the sins of the world. She knew that he was sinless – he was conceived by the Holy Spirit – and that all humanity was sinful. One had to die as a proxy for all; and her dear Jeshua was that One. It all made sense now – the cross was in the crib.

casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you

Author Bruce Larson tells how he counselled people who were struggling to surrender their lives to Christ. He says, “For many years I worked in New York City and counselled at my office any number of people who were wrestling with this yes-or-no decision. Often, I would suggest they walk with me from my office down to the RCA Building on Fifth Avenue. In the entrance of that building is a gigantic statue of Atlas, a beautifully proportioned man who, with all his muscles straining, is holding the world upon his shoulders. There he is, the most powerfully built man in the world, and he can barely stand up under this burden. 'Now that's one way to live,' I would point out to my companion, 'trying to carry the world on your shoulders. But now come across the street with me.'

"On the other side of Fifth Avenue is Saint Patrick's Cathedral, and there behind the high altar is a little shrine of the boy Jesus, perhaps eight or nine years old, and with no effort, he is holding the world in one hand. My point was illustrated graphically.”

Jesus Christ said, “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Then he added, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Jesus took the weight of the world on your behalf. The Bible tells us that God made him, who had no sin, to be sin for us so that, in him, we might have the righteousness of God imputed into us. You see, it was sin and corruption that has caused you and me to be overloaded by the cares of the world. Jesus removed the consequence of that sin when he died and rose again. Therefore, if we come to him and cast our cares on him, he will give us rest.

Our Lord is willing to take responsibility for your life if you acknowledge him in all your ways. Our Lord is willing to grant you peace that exceeds all reason if you present your needs to him with thanksgiving. Greater is your Lord within in you than all the forces of darkness in the world, and nothing will ever separate you from his love.

GOD-TRACKING IS LIVING FREELY AS SLAVES TO GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS

“Therefore, we have a new Master; we are no longer slaves to sin but now slaves to righteousness. Thank God, we are no longer compelled to sin, but, in Christ, we are now compelled to righteousness!”

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

I’m told that the population of the city of Rome during the height of the Roman empire was more than 50% comprised of slaves. That makes sense, since the citizens of Rome were wealthy and wealthy people, in those days, owned many slaves. Therefore, the letter that Paul wrote to Rome would have been read primarily to slaves.

One of the central themes of the book of Romans is righteousness by faith. In chapter 3 Paul (under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) writes about sin. He explains that no one is righteous: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But then he adds, “and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.” In chapter 6 he expounds the fact that we have all been enslaved to sin.
However, because Jesus died for sin (since the wages of sin is death) he subjected himself to slavery under sin. But – praise God – he did not remain dead. Because he was sinless, Jesus Christ was freed from that slavery when he rose from the dead. Through this act, he has become the proxy for you and me to be, likewise, freed from slavery to sin and become slaves, instead, to righteousness.

A slave is the possession of his master. A slave is bought with a price. A slave is compelled to obey his master. While you and I were enslaved to sin, we were compelled to sin – sinning was our natural state. However, Jesus redeemed us. He bought us back from the master of sin to set us free. Jesus paid the price to free us from slavery with his own blood. Therefore, we have a new Master; we are no longer slaves to sin but are now slaves to righteousness. Thank God, we are no longer compelled to sin, but, in Christ, we are now compelled to righteousness! You see, Jesus became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God.

The people of Rome, during the first century, would have instantly understood Paul’s analogy. They had a longing to be freed people. How about you?

Psalm 37:25I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.

Giving has always been a contentious issue among Christians. Some people believe that when we give, we should never expect anything in return. Others say that giving is a means to gain personal wealth. Which is it?

Jesus advocated giving. Firstly, he endorsed the paying of tithes with the account of the poor widow’s mite. He was sitting opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Secondly, he said things like, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Elsewhere we read of how Paul was in need and the Philippian folks gave generously to meet his budget. Of their gifts, Paul writes, “They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.” Writing to the Corinthians he says, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. God loves a cheerful giver.” And God always blesses the one he loves. (Remember, though Paul writes these words, they were inspired by the Holy Spirit – all Scripture is God-breathed.)

God loves the act of giving because God is a giver. Notice what the Scripture says in Philippians 4 verse 19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Likewise, Jesus implies that the giver, with the right heart motive, will be profusely blessed in return.
For the Christian, giving needs to be an open and honest act; not done to impress others but done cheerfully, with the motive of giving rather than receiving. Thus done, our God of abundance, who is true to his word, will never see the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread!

Two inspiring weekly devotional books by Dudley Anderson

I recently interviewed a lady who converted from Islam to Christianity. She grew up in a devout Muslim home, praying 5 times a day, fasting at Ramadan and regularly attending mosque. However, in her fervent Islamic prayer life, she never sensed the presence of one she believed was God. One day, out of a sense of curiosity, she stepped into a Christian church. She says, “In the middle of the worship I sensed the presence of God and couldn’t stop crying.” She accepted Jesus as the Son of God and her personal Lord and Saviour.

Before Jesus came to earth, died and rose again, God’s presence was only manifest in the Holy of Holies in the temple. Indeed, God is omnipresent – everywhere all the time – but his manifest presence was only known in one place – the Holy of Holies, which was separated from worshipers by a large very heavy curtain. However, the moment Jesus died, we see that heavy curtain ripped in two from top to bottom. The manifest presence of the Almighty, holy God was exposed; it became accessible to all who would draw near to worship through Christ. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one can come into God’s presence but by him.

God is, indeed, omnipresent – we can never be out of his presence. Therefore, it’s a fallacy to pray, “We come into your presence.” We should rather pray, “We come into the presence of mind of your presence.” We draw near to God not by the blood of a sacrificed animal once a year on the Day of Atonement; we draw near to God by the blood of the Son of God, sacrificed for sin once for all.

The presence of God is a very special place. The presence of God is freely available through Jesus, who was offered to reconcile you to the presence of God. In his presence is fullness of joy, peace and hope. He will never leave you or forsake you. As Christians, we all too often take the presence of God for granted. Let us not. God’s manifest presence is still as holy as it was in the days of Moses and Aaron.

Mankind was originally designed according to this plan but, sadly, the Bible says that, when we sinned, we fell short of this plan and corrupted God’s perfect righteous image. Though God sent us the Law of Moses to rectify the discrepancies, it was rendered powerless in that it was weakened by our sinful nature. Therefore, God sent his Son, Jesus – his original blueprint – to reconcile us back to himself. Because Jesus is God in the flesh he wasn’t marred by the fall of man. Jesus was and is sinless. Even so, God’s plan was to allow Jesus to bear the curse of sin when he died in our place, for the wages of sin is death. You see, God imputed Jesus with your sin so that, by repentance and in faith, you could be imputed with God’s righteousness. In Christ, you become the righteousness of God. Jesus in you is God’s original plan for your life.

Many people think that they need to work really hard to earn God’s favour, but this is impossible. God is so holy and righteous that we would need to become as he is in order to earn his favour. But Jesus is already how God is, because Jesus is God in the flesh. Therefore, in order to be holy as he is holy, you and I need to intentionally repent of sin and then live according to his blueprint for our lives, by faith. The moment you truly repent, you admit your failings and die to the old nature of sin. Then the moment you exercise faith in God’s grace you put your confidence in Christ as God’s original plan. And so you live by his righteousness and not yours. 

When you commit yourself to Christ God’s righteousness is graciously and supernaturally superimposed into your spirit-man; you become reconciled to God’s perfect blueprint. When you commit yourself to Christ you crumple up the old corrupted copy of the plan of your life and overlay it with God’s perfect, blessed and magnificent blueprint for your future. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope,” says the Lord.

From here on, O Lord, I choose to follow your blueprint for my life

“Dear God, I realise now that, like the rest of mankind, the plan of my life is marred by sin. I admit to my sin – stuff I have done that has displeased you and the sin of mankind that has been copied into my life through the generations. Thank you for sending Jesus – your original blueprint – to be a sin offering for me. I choose to put my faith in Jesus’ replacing sacrifice for my sins. I believe he died and rose again and now confess him to be Lord of my life. From here on, O Lord, I choose to follow your blueprint for my life. Amen.”
