And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.

Shortly after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we read in Acts that the early believers sold property to help feed the poor. At this time, we read that a Levite called Joses sold land and brought the proceeds to the apostles to be distributed. This was a commendable act since that land would have been Joses’s security and providence for his old age, yet he chose to give it all up for the sake of helping the needy. What an encouraging act. In fact, Joses was so much of an encourager that his name was changed to Barnabas, which means son of encouragement. Later we read how Barnabas took Paul under his wing when he was rejected by the other disciples because Paul had been a persecutor of the Christians. Barnabas encouraged Paul to stay strong and encouraged the other believers to accept him. Barnabas went on to be a travel companion with Apostle Paul, preaching the gospel across Asia Minor.

Years back when I was studying for the ministry, I endured a spiritual burnout and had a crisis of faith. At the time I was attending a large church in Johannesburg, South Africa. The pastor was a gentle yet firm man. Because of my experience, I had been appointed to a position of leadership in the church, yet I was in rebellion. Without criticism or rejection, my pastor took me under his wing. He lavished me with counsel and prayer. Never did he condemn my folly or deny me opportunity. In fact, I was promoted to music director of the church. I can only believe that he had insight into God’s call on my life and faith that God would pull me through my rebellion. And he did.

Is there someone in your life who you know is called of God but is suffering a crisis of faith at this time? Do you believe that God has a plan to use him/her mightily for the Kingdom yet he/she can’t see the wood for the trees, so to speak? May I encourage you to be an encourager and encourage that person to not give up but look up and trust God’s plan for their lives. Who knows the impact that one dear soul may have on the world because of your few words of encouragement?

Encourage believers in their walk with Christ. Encourage nonbelievers to walk with Christ.

“If you feel your arm becoming weary as you hold onto that offence, lay it down. Cast your cares on your Lord because he cares for you.”

“They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD.

I watched as the preacher half-filled a glass with water on a table. He then proceeded to lift it, hold it out in his left hand at arm’s length and begin speaking. “In this glass,” he said, “is about 100ml of water. The glass itself is not large or heavy, yet how long do you think I will be able to hold this half-filled glass of water at arm’s length in my left hand?” he asked with a glint in his eye. The audience was silent. One minute went by. “Will I hold it for thirty minutes, ten or less?” His arm began to droop. Gradually after only two and a half minutes the preacher dropped his arm and returned the glass to the table. “So it is when you hold a grudge in your heart,” he said.

Like others, I know how tiring it is to harbour a feeling of resentment. I was once deeply offended and hurt by a good friend and mentor who falsely accused me of rebellion in the church. For weeks and months, I wrestled with his accusations, weighing every account, every accusation, and every criticism he brought against me, trying to understand what it was he was accusing me of. It was only by God’s grace that I did not find any truth in is accusations. I was vindicated. However, for long afterwards, I held onto the pain of the offence. I had taken the glass in my left hand and held it out at arm’s length.

Sadly, many of us harbour offence like this. Unforgiveness has a dreadful habit of weighing one down to the point of emotional exhaustion. Perhaps this is why Jesus said, “If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also,” and we read in Romans, “Never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God.”

If you feel your arm becoming weary as you hold onto that offence, lay it down. Cast your cares on your Lord because he cares for you. Your enemy will not overcome you, for your God is with you and will rescue you.

I choose now to lay it all down; to cast my hurt and pain onto you because you care for me. I know the truth and your truth is my vengeance, O Lord. Intimate Reverence

“May we use his name with deep reverence, respect and fear. May we never become too familiar with El-Shaddai, though he calls us his friends and sons/daughters.”

Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

There is an old English idiom that says, familiarity breeds contempt. The expression means, if you know someone or something very well, you can easily become bored with them and stop treating them with respect. Is there a danger that we can become too familiar with the Lord God that our relationship with him becomes so casual that we lose faith in his omnipotence?

Jesus was ministering around the towns of Galilee, performing many miracles and healing the sick. His teaching was profound and people were in awe of his wisdom and authority until he entered Nazareth. Jesus decided to go to his hometown and continue his work. Nazareth is a town west of the Sea of Galilee. This is where Jesus grew up. It’s where he played in the streets, attended the synagogue and learned his trade. The people of Nazareth knew Jesus well.

“Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?” they asked. “Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” His old friends and family took offense at his standing. Who was he to come back home and tell them what to do? As a result of their flippancy, they had no respect for Jesus. Jesus could not perform many miracles in Nazareth because their faith and expectations were low. They were too familiar with the Son of God.

One of the names of God is El-Shaddai. El-Shaddai means God Almighty. Our God is great. He is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent. God is holy, unique, separate, pure and exclusive. He displays absolute righteousness, justice, power and truth. There is no one – nothing – like our God in the universe. He is invincible, immense, unconquerable, impregnable, sovereign and all-encompassing.

May we use his name with deep reverence, respect and fear. May we never become too familiar (matey) with El-Shaddai, though he calls us his friends and sons/daughters. May we remain unfamiliar as we approach the throne of grace with intimacy in faith. Let’s respect, revere and love our Lord as we trust him to work miracles in our lives.

Observing the Details

“Like expert trackers tacking their prize through the African scrub, may we take Mary’s example and remain attentive to the finer details of the Lord’s guidance.”

Psalm 130:6

My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Watching a nature documentary on television, I was fascinated by the skill of the Kalahari Bushmen a s they tracked a rhinoceros through the Namibian scrub. Pointing to the large 3-toed footprints in the sand these expert trackers revealed how they knew not only the direction the animal was travelling in but also its distance from that point. The rhino had uprooted two very small seedlings with its foot as it strut through the bush. Knowing its walking pace and how long it had taken the leaves of that plant to wilt, given the heat of the day, the tracker could calculate how far away the animal was. “The art of tracking,” said Ray Mears the presenter of the TV documentary, “is the ability to observe every minute detail.”

Jesus and his disciples had been trekking the whole day in the dry heat of Judaean hills when they entered Martha’s home for respite. Martha was an excellent hostess so she immediately set about getting supper ready. As she dashed about setting the low table and preparing the stew, she noticed her sister, Mary who shared the house with her, sitting at Jesus’ feet listening intently to his every word. "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" said Martha with indignation. "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

If you’re anything like me then I’m sure, every time you read this story you feel an affinity toward Martha. After all, wasn’t she giving her all to serve her Lord? And yes, it certainly is right and good to do all your hand finds to do with all your might, as unto the Lord. However, Jesus was quick to point out to Martha that she was so busy getting things together for the work of the Lord that she was missing the Lord of the work. While Martha was running about frantically serving Jesus, she was missing the finer details of his teaching. Mary, on the other hand, sat quietly at his feet, observing every minute detail.

Like expert trackers tacking their prize through the African scrub, may we take Mary’s example and remain attentive to the finer details of the Lord’s guidance.

“Dear Lord I want to take a moment to thank you for all you have given me. However, like Martha, I often get so wound up with the work to be done that I neglect the smaller more important details in life, like taking time at your feet. In you I live and move and have my being so I realise now that it’s very foolish to do anything that draws me away from your presence, O my Lord. Today I choose to walk with you and listen to your voice. I choose to observe every minute detail of the move of your hand. As a watchman waits for the morning, help me to keep my eye on the son-rise. Amen.”

He Will Restore Your Dreams

Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negeb!

God’s people were distraught when Jerusalem fell in 597 BC and they were exiled to Babylon. Their hopes and dreams were dashed. Dads had great ambition for their sons and moms dreamt of the day their daughters would raise their own children in a free and bonnie land. Leaders dreamt of growing their communities. Farmers imagined flourishing crops to feed the children while rabbis had visions of teaching their people the ways of Yehovah. But now, their dreams and ambitions were shattered. By the waters of Babylon, they sat down and wept when they remembered Zion. Yet, the prophet Jeremiah had prophesied the word of the Lord, “I will visit you, and I will fulfil to you my promise and bring you back to this place.”

The people of God had hope. Adonai had promised to restore their dreams. Out of the ashes of despair and seeming abandonment, their dreams would rise. God promised to return them to the land flowing with milk and honey. That promise was all they had to hold onto while they were in captivity. Seventy years later the Jews returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple of the Lord.

Hold on to your dreams. Never doubt the purposes of your God. His word endures forever. You may feel like you’re in exile today – dreams dashed, ambition washed over – but don’t let go of God’s word to fulfil his promise to you, to bring you back to the place of prosperity. Out of the ashes, your dreams will rise. Just keep your eyes on Jesus and your nose in God’s word. Never give up, only look up and continue to acknowledge the Lord in all your ways. Trust God to bring you back to your Zion and restore your fortunes like streams in the desert.

God-tracking is trusting God to fulfil your dreams.

Yet, I know you are always true to your word and your word reminds me that all your promises are yes and amen in Jesus. So, I repent of my attitude of despair and choose to believe that you will restore my fortunes. I set my hope in you. I acknowledge you, O Lord, in all my ways and set my gaze on Jesus, the author of my life. Amen.”
