Dear God-tracker

There once was a man who cared for the two orphaned sons of his brother after their parents died in a motor accident. Paul was a kindly uncle who treated both of his nephews fairly, with love and respect. As the boys grew it became clear that the younger lad was more adventurous than the older. He would squander his pocket money and often fall prey to foul play at school. Uncle Paul would often need to call the youngster to account and council him on the hazards of wild living. Paul spent hours praying for and talking to the younger brother, however, loved both of these boys equally.

Through time, as they grew into young men, the older brother began to complain that his sibling was Paul’s favourite. “You’re always spending time with Roger,” he said, “you never seem to notice anything I do. I worked hard at school to earn your favour; I’ve never been involved in anything untoward and I’ve set about to follow a commendable career. Yet, it seems, you don’t even know what I’m doing with my life.”

“Ah Peter, you’re right,” replied his uncle. “I have put a great deal of effort into your brother’s upbringing, but he needed my guidance more than you did. I love you just as much as I love him. It doesn’t mean that, because I paid more attention to Roger, that I have ignored you. I have watched you with pride and know about everything you’ve ever set your hand to do. I know you more than you know yourself and will always, always be there for you when you need me.”

Sometimes this scenario often plays out in our relationship with Father God. I don’t know about you but I often find myself complaining to God that he doesn’t pay enough attention to me. I find that I compare myself to others at church or in the family and think that God is unaware of all the good things I do in life. When those around me are in need I witness how God provides for them. When those around me are going astray I notice how the Holy Spirit draws them back to God’s word. Well, what about me? Has God forgotten all about me? Does he even know me or see what I do? Are my ways hidden from the Lord?

In the days of calamity, when Israel was faced with foes on every side, they witnessed what seemed to be God’s favour visited upon their enemies. Israel complained, “My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God.” Yet The Lord reaffirms through the prophet Isaiah that he, who does not grow weary, is full of understanding. And then there was King David. He was a man who served the Lord with integrity yet he too witnessed how others around him seemed to be blessed by God. But then he says, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.”

God the omnipresent and omniscient One does know all about you, dear God-tracker! He knows when you rise and when you fall. He knows your needs and your wants. He knows your achievements, your failures, your disappointments and your joys. It may seem to you that he takes no notice of you and seems to bless others around you, but know this: God knows even the very number of hairs on your head! Rest assured today that the Lord your God knows precisely where you are on your track of life and he is walking along with you every step of the way. So try not to compare your life to those around you; if God is their God then he will call them to account for their own lives. Just keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and your ears open to his command.

God-tracking is knowing that God personally knows your every movement.

Stay blessed

I believe… you are personally involved in every aspect of my life

“Heavenly Father, I realise now that you know all there is to ever know about me. Thank you that you care for me, even when it seems that you’re silent. In fact, it’s when you’re silent that I believe I have no reason for concern, because it’s at those times that I am walking quietly within your will. Help me to not compare my life to others’ lives and I’m sorry if I’ve ever done so. I believe and confess that you are my personal Lord and Saviour and, as such, you are personally involved in every aspect of my life. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS FANNING THE FIRE OF GOD’S WORD IN YOUR BONES

Dear God-tracker

God-tracking is fanning the fire of God’S WORD in your bones

Growing up in the Highveld of South Africa I was accustomed to bush fires. We used to call these wild fires veld fires. Veld fires were always mostly prevalent in the dry winter months when the grasses were long and brittle. It would only take a small spark or a smouldering cigarette end to start a fire in the grass, but once started veld fires were almost impossible to control. Everything in their path would be obliterated: trees, bush, wildlife, crops and sometimes people’s homes. You could say these fires were zealous and ravenous for more fuel. They were not content to only burn in one patch and then stop. They would eagerly consume the veld until all that was left was smouldering patchwork like burnt toast.

The prophet Jeremiah said, “His word was in my heart like a burning fire.” This prophet knew well the meaning of being consumed by the zeal of the Lord. He was a man called to bring a solemn and condemning word to the people of Judah, against their rebellion and moral decay. This word that God had given Jeremiah consumed him. He was compelled to speak even though his outspokenness landed him in serious trouble within his community. Jeremiah was sold-out for God and totally committed to serving Him. There was not an ounce of apathy in the man. The fire shut up in his bones prohibited him from being indifferent or lethargic. I dare say fire can most certainly never be complacent!

Is there a veld fire burning in your heart today? Are you filled with the zeal of the Lord like the prophet Jeremiah or even the prophet Elijah, who stood against the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel? If so then allow that fire to consume you; allow that fire shut up in your bones to daily motivate you to be sold-out for Jesus. Jesus said to Apostle John in the book of Revelation that he wishes people were either cold or hot, but because they are lukewarm he would spew them from his mouth. So let’s be motivated by the zeal of the Lord to be consistent at church, consistent in prayer and consistent in filling our hearts with more of the fire of his word.

Stay ablaze!

Your word is fire in my heart. I am weary of holding it in. Indeed, I cannot
“Dear God, forgive me for being complacent and allowing the fire in my heart to burn out. Thank you for the small spark that can set a forest ablaze, that still resides there. Today I fan that glow into a fiery furnace. Today I want to commit myself to serve you in every area of life with zeal and passion. Dear Lord, help me be consistent in my worship and Bible reading. Help me to be consistent in my love for others and in showing them the love of God. Your word is fire in my heart. I am weary of holding it in. Indeed, I cannot. Amen.”

Dear God-tracker

The moment Joe opened the back door and walked into the kitchen, Mary knew he’d been tinkering on his old MG. Joe loved cars. He’d bought the MG a few months back and was in the process of restoring the car. Being a classic, the MG had no mod-cons like a computerised fuel injector but employed a good-old-fashioned carburettor as its fuel supply system. When he’d opened the carb to clean it Joe was covered in fuel. As he entered the kitchen all that Mary could smell was the stench of petrol.

In Exodus we read of how the Lord instructed Moses to mix various fragrant ingredients together to form the anointing oil. This oil included ingredients like myrrh, cinnamon and sweet-smelling cane and was used to anoint all the artefacts of the temple. Anyone who worked in the temple would come out smelling like myrrh and cinnamon. It was the fragrance of worship.

In both cases above we read how people were affected by the fragrance of the commodities with which they worked. If a person handles a fragrant commodity then he or she will smell of that fragrance wherever they go. The more time Joe spent handling petrol the more its fragrance would remain on him, until the people around him would begin to associate him with cars. For those who love the smell of petrol (or cinnamon, for that matter) Joe offers no offence. However, for those who despise the smell of petrol, every time Joe stepped into the room they would cringe.

Scripture tells us that those who know Jesus as Saviour and spend time in his presence will gain the aroma of the knowledge of Christ. Wherever they go they will spread that fragrance. Out in the world the person emanating the fragrance of Christ becomes a stench in the nostrils of those who do not have the knowledge of Christ. And when people are repelled by the aroma of God they will usually take out their irritations on the person who reminds them of their sin, prompted by the smell of Christ. However, when a worshipper of God is among fellow worshippers his fragrance is the smell of life and a pleasure to others who worship God. You see, the true Believer is the one who spends so much time in the presence of God that he ends up smelling like Jesus. His smell will directly affect those around him.

So, dear God-tracker, take courage when someone tells you that you’re getting up their nose. To those who love the Lord that you love, you are a pleasant fragrance but in the world your fragrance will be certain to cause offence.

God-tracking is coming out smelling like Christ

Every blessing

Help me to spend more time in prayer so that I become the aroma of Christ to those who love you and the smell of conviction of sin to those who don’t

“O Lord, I want to smell like you more and more. Help me to spend more time in prayer so that I become the aroma of Christ to those who love you and the smell of conviction of sin to those who don’t. Because I pray this prayer I know that I will become disliked out in the world. I realise it’s not me they dislike but you in me. Your smell upon my clothes reminds them of sin so I realise they may take their frustrations out on me. Help me to love these people and continue to radiate aroma of Christ. I pray that these people will come to know your smell on me as the fragrance of the knowledge of life. To your glory. Amen.”
