GOD-TRACKING IS STAYING ALERT

Ephesians 5:13-14
But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

With bloodied sweat on his brow, Jesus made his way the few paces back to his friends who he’d ask to join him in prayer in the olive grove. He’d been travailing before the Father for hours. It was well past midnight and he knew that he would soon be arrested, tried, convicted and crucified for crimes he’d never committed. "Could you men not keep watch with me?" he asked them. "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
John and his two friends, James and Peter had sat down a stone’s throw away from Jesus and watched him pray. They had a feeling that something dreadful was about to take place, but fatigue had overtaken them. Sadly, they could not keep their eyes open at this late hour, leaving Jesus to face the cup of God’s wrath, alone.

Many years later well after Peter and James had been martyred, the risen and ascended Jesus Christ appeared to John in a vision on the Greek Isle of Patmos. Before he revealed to John what would come at the end of all time, Jesus gave John instructions to the churches of Asia Minor. To the church in Sardis he said, “Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.” I can’t help wondering if John thought back to that auspicious moment in Gethsemane when he had fallen asleep watching the Son of God bear the weight of wrath.

As we track God’s purposes we often become blasé about his commands and instructions. We become so familiar with prayer, worship and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit that we fall asleep in our complacency. The danger of this is that we miss the blessings of God and fail to follow his plans. We are told to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author of our faith. If we lose focus of the Saviour we will become weak and open ourselves to the arrest of the enemy. Let’s open ourselves rather to God’s word. And God’s word to us today is to “Wake up! Strengthen what remains.”

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

I shake myself awake and strengthen what remains, for I believe that you are coming soon, Lord Jesus

“Dear God, I am sorry for my slumber. I apologise for my apathy and repent of becoming complacent about your Word, worship, prayer and fellowship. You have saved me by the blood of Jesus and I have been taking this fact for granted. I am so sorry, O Lord. I stir myself awake now. I rouse myself to enjoy every moment with you as though it was the moment I first asked Jesus into my life. Help me to celebrate every living minute in the freshness of your presence. Help me to live every day with my eyes on Jesus. And help me to make the most of every occasion for the Gospel. I shake myself awake and strengthen what remains, for I believe that you are coming soon, Lord Jesus. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS HAVING FAITH IN GOD’S PLANS, EVEN THROUGH SHIPWRECK

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope

The night was very dark. The wind howled through torn rigging like a ravenous wolf. Lashing rain combined with smashing white waters, flooded the deck. The crew and prisoners on board this vessel had been lashed by a ferocious storm at sea for weeks. They were exhausted and feared certain death. Paul, a prisoner aboard the ship said, “Men, I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’”

True to his Word, God preserved all their lives. The ship ran aground near Malta, but all on board were saved. When they landed, the people of the island welcomed them warmly. While making a fire, Paul was bitten by a viper, but when he failed to die the islanders thought he was a god. Paul hastily corrected their perception, telling them about the power God to save, deliver and heal, through Jesus Christ. The result was a great revival on Malta. The whole island turned to Jesus and many were healed of their infirmities. Nearly 2,000 years later, the island of Malta still enjoys a strong Christian influence.

So often I hear people say that their lives have been shipwrecked by circumstances beyond their control. I think we can safely say that Paul’s shipwreck, as described above, was beyond his control. Yet, God used the circumstances of this apparent disaster to bring many, many into his kingdom and performed miracles of healing, to boot. I think we can safely say that the event of Paul’s shipwreck was well within God’s plan for the apostle’s life.

Acknowledge God in all your ways and he will direct your life’s track. Even through the storms of looming shipwreck, God’s purposes will prevail. God knows the plans he has for you, so have faith in his designs. Keep your eyes on Christ. Look through your shipwreck experience, scorn its shame, and go on to enjoy the blessings God has in store for you. God’s plans are always for your welfare, to give you a future filled with hope.

So, help me to face this looming shipwreck. I choose to keep my eyes on Jesus and his example as he looked through his cross to see himself victoriously sitting on the righthand side of God. GOD-TRACKING IS GETTING A FRESH SENSE OF GOD’S PURPOSE

Proverbs 19:21
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.

One of golf's immortal moments came when a Scotsman demonstrated the new game to American President Ulysses Grant. He carefully placed the ball on the tee and took a mighty swing. The club hit the turf and sprayed dirt all over the President's beard and suit, while the ball sedately waited on the tee. Again and again, the Scotsman swung but he missed. President Grant waited patiently through six attempts and then quietly said, "There seems to be a fair amount of exercise in the game, but I fail to see the purpose of the ball.”

Some mornings I wake up void of enthusiasm, wrestling to affirm the true reasons I do what I do. It’s not that I have been demotivated by anything or anyone, just that I feel unmotivated to get on with it. Ever been there? Inevitably, I have taken on so many activities that I’ve burned out and lost focus. It’s at times like these, I need a fresh sense of purpose.

The Scriptures tell us that God has a plan and a purpose for each of us. God is omniscient and omnipresent – he knows each of us personally. He knows the plans he has for you and me. However, we often assume we know God’s plans and grab hold of every opening that comes our way. Sadly, we often end up missing the purposes God has planned for us and finding ourselves swinging away at life, missing the ball at every strike. We need to learn to trust God’s purposes for our lives. As Brian Houston says, “When the Lord gives you a sense of purpose, that purpose ruins you for anything else. Nothing else will ever bring true peace, because peace is found only in pursuing the purposes of God.”

I choose to acknowledge you in all my ways and seek your plans and purposes for my life. I commit my work to you. I commit relationships to you. I commit my ministry to you. It was winter in New York when Captain Sullenberger crash landed his wounded Airbus A320 on the Hudson River. The plane had suffered a bird strike, disabling both engines. Sullenberger had no option but to bring the craft down on the freezing waters. Miraculously the plane remained intact. Once down, Sullenberger and his crew evacuated the passengers, most of whom stood on the wings of the craft, awaiting rescue. One hundred and fifty-five people were on board US Airways Flight 1549 that day, including passengers and crew; 155 people survived the crash.

I was watching the 2016 film, Sully for the second time, featuring Tom Hanks staring as the airline pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger. The film portrayed an accurate account of the 15th January 2009 event. Intrigued, I watched as the crew and passengers stood precariously on the wings of the Airbus as it slowly sank in the frigid winter waters. Captain Sully was indeed, heroic in landing the plane securely on the Hudson, but he was not the only hero. One by one, humble civilian ferries and boats pulled alongside the stricken aircraft, rescuing all 155 people from certain drowning.

As I watch I sensed the Holy Spirit of God speak gently into my heart. You and all those who are called by my name, are just like these humble craft; called to rescue the lost! Rescue those who are on the edge of death, though they don’t even realise it. Go!

Jesus gave us a commission: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations. We are compelled to rescue those who are on the precipice of eternal death – compelled by command and compelled by love. We have been commissioned by our Commander in Chief to come alongside and throw out the lifejacket of his Gospel to rescue those who are lost, though they don’t know it. If we delay or just drift about watching them drown their blood will be on our hands. The times are drawing in. Jesus’ return is imminent. We need to do as he has commanded, GO – Get Out!

I wept and as I watched the humble un-trained crews and passengers of those day-to-day ferries rescuing the perishing.

I pray that you will open the door for me to share my faith with them… before it’s too late

“Dear Lord, I’m sorry for being complacent about the great commission. Forgive me for not making the most of every opportunity to share the Good News of the Gospel. Help my now to be bold and stout-hearted and Get Out (GO) there to rescue the lost. I pray for my friends and loved ones who are on the verge of spiritual disaster and don’t even know it. I pulled up next to a tour coach at a traffic light. It was loaded with fun seeking people at the start of their vacation, all laughing and chatting about days ahead filled with sun and sights. But that red light was taking ages to change. Tapping my steering wheel impatiently, a thought dropped into my heart, “There are times in life when I feel as though I’m just sitting stationary in an old bus, idling at a red traffic light – chug, chug, chug.

The words of God through the prophet Jeremiah came to mind: “I know the plans I have for you. Plans to give you a hope and future.” Jeremiah had prophesied that the people of Judah were to be conquered by the Babylonians and taken into exile. He said they would remain in exile for 70 years but after this time God would restore them and prosper his people once again. Young Daniel was one of those taken into exile. Daniel’s heart was right before God. I could imagine Daniel reading Jeremiah’s words with anticipation of good times ahead, yet, as the years dragged by, perhaps he couldn’t help wondering when the light was going to change. However, Daniel was not idle during his time in exile. He was a man of prayer, so much so that he was even thrown into a pit of lions, because he dared pray to Yahweh. He was also a prophet who interpreted dreams and prophesied coming ages. Daniel made the most of his waiting years. His prayer witness and his words changed even the hardened heats of the tyrant kings. And his witness and words are still changing lives today. Daniel did not idly resign to his fate. While he waited for God’s plans for his people to mature, Daniel rose up as praying man faith.

Chug, chug, chug, spluttered the old bus at the red light next my car. The Holy Spirit spoke into my heart: “So, while waiting for your light to change, pray, pray, pray! For I know the plans I have for you. Seek them in prayer. A time of idling is not a time to be idle.”

I determine to wait patiently for my circumstances to line up with your plans for my life

“Dear Lord, it feels like I’ve been stopped at this place for ages. I know you have plans for my life and I know you have a purpose for me to see the fruit of my work, but sometimes I feel as though I’m just idling away at a red light, waiting for change to happen. So, Lord, I pray for your plans to work out in my life and the lives of those around me. I pray for patience and a pray for peace. I pray for your kingdom to come and your will to be done. I fix my mind on things above and my eyes on Jesus, Dear Lord, I determine to wait patiently for my circumstances to line up with your plans for my life. Amen.”

Karen and I were trekking home after a tremendous few days at a Christian conference. We were driving southbound on a main motorway in the British West Midlands. Our side of the motorway was free flowing, thankfully, but as we drove on we noticed a large articulated truck that had pulled off the carriageway on the opposite side of the road. The large vehicle had endured a blowout and its crew were changing the wheel. Due the size of the vehicle and the hazard it presented to other road users, the police had cordoned off two lanes, resulting in all the upcoming traffic being directed into one lane past the broken-down truck. Consequently, the traffic had backed up for miles leading up to the bottleneck at the road incident. Still charged from the touch of the Holy Spirit at the conference, I had a flash of inspiration cross my mind. The Lord dropped a word into my heart: “This is where so many of my children find themselves these days, backed up at a bottleneck in life.”

I know from my own walk along God’s track of life, that we, as 21st century Christians, become so involved and committed to myriad activities that, when we come across a little hiccup along the motorways of life, we become backed up and slow down like cars in a traffic jam. Consequently, we become stressed out, anxious and impatient. By our own reasoning we think we have everything under our control so when the unforeseen happens, we end up blaming others or God for messing up the free flow of our lives. But, God often uses the unforeseen little holdups in life to force us to stop and survey our journey. It’s when the unforeseen little holdups happen that we notice the scenery for the first time. And it’s often when the unforeseen little holdups happen that God begins to thin our lives out and teach a crucial lesson in patience and endurance. Our God is a patient God.

There’s an Jewish tale that goes: Bar Kappara, an old Jewish sage, was once walking along the seashore of Caesarea, when he noticed a shipwreck out at sea. As he watched, he saw a man swimming from the wreck towards the shore. When the man reached land, he almost collapsed with weariness. Bar Kappara went forward and gave him a helping hand. He then took him home, clothed him, fed him and offered him some money. So, the man went away refreshed and restored.

Some years later, the Jews of Caesarea found themselves in a predicament with the local authorities and decided to send a petition to the Governor. They chose Bar Kappara to go and speak on their behalf. Bar Kappara prayed to God to for guidance. When he reached the palace, he asked to see the Governor. As he was ushered into the presence of the Governor, to his great astonishment, Bar Kappara recognized him as the same man whom he had once saved and helped on the shores of Caesarea.

"What can I do for you, my friend?" said the Governor, recognizing Bar Kappara as his onetime friend in need. "Bar Kappara earnestly begged the Governor to use his influence in helping his fellow countrymen deal with the pending need. Listening carefully to the story, the Governor said, “I will gladly do this favour for you, my friend, because when I was in such a desperate state you helped me to the maximum of your ability, without asking for or expecting any reward. Because of your unselfishness and kindness to me, I shall now help your suffering brethren at your request."
The Governor gave a large sum of money to Bar Kappara saying, “Take this money back as a gift from me. For, although the sum of money you gave me was not as great as this, to me it meant everything at the time of my need. You may return to your brethren and tell them that I am helping them, out of gratitude to you."

Bar Kappara joyfully hurried back with the good news to his friends who were anxiously awaiting his return. Great was the rejoicing among them at Bar Kappara's good tidings. They all acknowledged how true was the saying of King Solomon: "Cast thy bread upon the waters for you shall find it after many days."

You may be faced with the prospect of letting go of a vision or a dream today; or God may be asking you to sow into the needs of another. Be sure that, if you acknowledge God in all your ways, he will guide your life’s track. And if he is guiding your life’s track then you can be sure that the words of Jesus will hold true for you: “For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
