“Dear God-tracker, may we keep our
eyes on Christ and humble ourselves before God, walking in the purity of wisdom
from above. May we submit to one another in reverence for the plans for God.”
Ephesians 5:21
…submitting to one
another out of reverence for Christ.
In my 43 years’ experience of church attendance, I have yet to
find a fellowship free of selfish ambition. Sadly! From an early age, I have
attended churches where one or two self-motivated individuals have resisted the
move of the Holy Spirit, or who have risen in retaliation against the authority
of their leaders. Inspired by the Holy
Spirit James writes, “If you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your
hearts, do not boast. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will
be disorder and every vile practice.” Then he goes on to ass that godly wisdom
begins with purity.
It is a sad reality that Satan’s primary goal is to undermine the
plans of God for his children and the Church. One of the ways the devil does
this is to stir up dissension, discord and disunity in the Body of Christ.
These vices have at their root, selfish ambition, which plays out in church
politics. The root of selfish ambition is the ego – the self! It’s been my
experience that every church has its own band of, “I-think-we-shoulds” –
untransformed self-interested people who are disgruntled with the vision and
oversight of God’s delegated authority on earth.
James makes it clear that real godly wisdom (the source of vision
and purpose) begins with purity. Purity always asks the question, why?
What’s the motive for my decision making and what’s the motive of my opinion?
Godly wisdom continues in peace, good reason, mercy, impartiality and
sincerity. Avery true believer has been transformed from a life of self-interest
to a life of self-sacrifice and submission. A great man who had every reason to
boast was, Apostle Paul. Yet by the Holy Spirit he said, “I have been crucified
with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
Dear God-tracker, may we keep our eyes on Christ and humble our… selves
before God, walking in the purity of wisdom from above. May we submit to one
another in reverence for the plans for God.

“Dear Heavenly God, thank you for your grace and mercy

selfish ambition into a life filled with love, submission and truth. Thank you
that Jesus died to reconcile me to your righteousness and called me to one
hope, one faith, one baptism and one Body. Today I ask your forgiveness for any
rebellion and selfish ambition in my heart, and I commit myself to humbly serve
you in my place in the body of Christ. Amen.”
