“When we confessed Jesus as Lord and Saviour, God wiped our slate clean. However, from time to time we drop our guard and land on a block of ice in the river headed for a dreadful fall.”

Romans 6:11
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

A story is told of an eagle perched on a block of ice floating down the river above Niagara Falls. The swift current carried the ice and its regal passenger closer to the edge of the great precipice. Other birds and animals cried out, warning the eagle of the danger that lay ahead but he thought he knew better. "I have great and powerful wings," he boasted. "I can fly from my perch at any time. I can handle it." Suddenly the edge of the falls was upon him. The torrent of water rushed the block of ice over the great falls. The mighty eagle spread his powerful wings to rise above the awaiting doom only to discover too late that his claws had become frozen fast to the block of ice he was standing on.

As a Christian, I am not exempt from temptation and sadly I often succumb to it and fall. I would that I didn’t but, if I’m honest, I do. Even though I am born again and a new creation in Jesus, I still find the lure of the world overpowers me at times. Unfortunately, I often do things that I wish I had not done and don’t do things that I wish I had done.

Paul the Apostle had this dilemma, too. He said, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.” Another time he said, “For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.”

Sin’s like that. It’s a block of ice. Stand long on it and you will become frozen by its icy grip. Sin entered the world when man disobeyed God’s eternal word and has held us fast since Eden. The Bible says that if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But it also says that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If you have come to Christ and consider yourself born again then you are, indeed, a new creation and God has removed all sin from you. The blood of Jesus settled our account for sin once and for all, because justice was done at Calvary. When we confessed Jesus as Lord and Saviour, God wiped our slate clean. However, from time to time we drop our guard and land on a block of ice in the river headed for a dreadful fall. Here, if we linger too long, it freezes around our ankles. Richard Baxter said, “And the longer you delay, the more your sin gets strength and rooting. If you cannot bend a twig, how will you be able to bend it when it is a tree?”

So, don’t waste time. Admit to your committed sin daily so that when you approach that waterfall you can soar on wings like an eagle. And remember those wings only come when you wait on the Lord!

God-tracking is holding a short account of sin.

Don’t Give Up, Look Up & Pray

“Reveal to me when I am perched on an ice block of sin, O Lord. Help me to repent on a daily basis so that I may draw closer to you as I track your paths for my life.”

“Dear God, I want to keep a short account of my sins. I realise that I do still sin from time to time and I am sorry, Lord. I admit to you that I have recently done, said and thought things that I know have grieved your Holy Spirit and I’m sorry. I repent of all sin and seek your gracious forgiveness and cleansing. O Father, your grace is the blowtorch that melts the ice of sin from around my ankles. Thank you for your grace. It is only by your grace that I can face another day in this world that is riddled with sin. Thank you for your mercy and forgiveness. Reveal to me when I am perched on an ice block of sin, O Lord. Help me to repent daily so that I may draw closer to you as I track your paths for my life. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray.  Amen.
