Forgive and be Forgiven

Matthew 6:14-15
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

God-tracking is relishing in forgiveness
In Scripture, we see how Jesus forgave people. For example, the woman caught in adultery and the criminal who was crucified with him. There is no sin too great to be forgiven. All sin is equal in God’s sight because God is infinitely good. And yet, if I confess my sin to him, God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse me.

However, there is one sin that can inhibit God’s forgiveness, and that is unforgiveness because unforgiveness insults God’s forgiveness. It’s like two people stranded in the desert dying of thirst. A man appears with a large pitcher of water, and the first man drinks all of it without offering any to his dying friend.

Unforgiveness will destroy the one holding on to it. If you’re harbouring unforgiveness,  come quickly to the feet of Jesus and forgive your brother. Do this you will know the liberty of forgiving and being forgiven.

God-tracking is relishing in forgiveness

When I confess my sin, the Father forgives me because of the blood of the Son and the indwelling Holy Spirit cleanses me of my sin. Therefore, I will no longer live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Zechariah 13:1
“In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness."

In the Bible, the word “fountain” refers to a stream or a river. According to Jewish tradition, natural water from a stream or river is called living water. Orthodox Jews use natural water in their mikvahs (baptismal fonts) for ceremonial cleaning. When a person immerses themself in the mikveh and rises again they are considered to be as a child newly born. Living water is a symbol of new life and cleansing.

To the woman at the well in Samaria, Jesus said, "He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this he spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in him would receive. So, if the Holy Spirit is likened to living water, then it is the Holy Spirit who gives me new life in Christ and cleanses me of my sins. When I received Jesus as Lord and Saviour I was born again – like a child newly born. The Holy Spirit entered my body. My body became the temple of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells in my mortal flesh.

The Holy Spirit is, well… holy. That is, he is righteous, pure and sanctified. When I was born again, the righteousness of God entered me by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the imputation of God’s righteousness in me. The Son of God, Jesus, was sinless. Yet God imputed my sin in him at Calvery so that by faith in his death and resurrection and by confessing him as Lord, I might be imputed with God’s righteousness. That righteousness comes from the Holy Spirit. I have been holified by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

The holiness (or righteousness) of the Holy Spirit in me eradicates my sin. When I confess my sin, the Father forgives me because of the blood of the Son while the indwelling Holy Spirit cleanses me of my sin.

Therefore, I will no longer live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

God-tracking is living by the Spirit.

I was sad when I heard about the passing of Billy Graham. Graham was one of the most prolific evangelists of our time. He leaves a great legacy behind of millions of lives touched and changed by the grace of God.

One of the stories Billy Graham shared, is the time when he was stopped for speeding by a local police officer. He had inadvertently exceeded the state speed limit by 10 miles per hour. The officer promptly gave the preacher a $10 traffic ticket, one dollar for every mile he exceeded the speed limit, and instructed him to attend court when he was summoned. At court the judged asked Billy Graham how he pleaded. “Guilty, your honour,” replied Graham. As he spoke the judge recognised the defendant as Billy Graham, the great evangelist of the 20th century. “Mr Graham,” he said, “you have been found guilty of breaking the law and will need to pay the fine. However, I choose to pay it for you, myself.” With that the judged came down from his bench, drew a $10 bill from his wallet and handed it to the guilty man to pay the price for his crime. “That’s grace,” said Billy Graham.

Grace is God’s doing.

All of us are guilty of missing God’s mark of perfect goodness. We have violated his laws and exceeded his moral limits. God is good and requires that we meet his standards of goodness. But that’s impossible for us, because of sin.

“How do you plead,” asks the Judge. “Guilty, your honour.”
“The wages of sin is death. Therefore, you are sentence for your crime.” At this point the Eternal Judge steps down from his celestial throne and becomes like the ones who violated his law. God, the sovereign Judge, loved you so much that he gave his one and only Son that if you believe in him you will not perish but have eternal life. That’s grace.

God-tracking is begins with grace.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

If you wish to know the grace of God and give your life to Christ, please pray with me…

Dear God, I admit that I have missed the mark of your goodness. I was born into sin and am guilty of violating your limits. I confess my sin, in Jesus’ name. Thank you for your grace in sending Jesus to pay the price for my crime. I accept your grace and put my faith in the work of Jesus on the cross. I accept Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour and call him Lord. I give my life to you, O Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Dear God-tracker

GOD-TRACKING IS KEEPING YOUR EYES ON JESUS AND YOUR HEART SOFT

Jeremiah 23:29
Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord,
and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

At school I was taught that the hardest substance known to man is the diamond. Well I beg to differ. I believe the hardest substance known to man is not any physical material; the hardest substance known to man is the very heart of man himself. Because of the hardness of heart wars have been fought. Because of the hardness of heart men and women have missed out God’s call to ministry. Because of the hardness of heart men and women reject the love of God and die in sin. Because of the hardness of heart successful marriages end up in divorce.

I once knew a young couple who had been married for several years when the husband fell in love with another woman. It’s the age-old story of a strong marriage being shipwrecked by tainted love. The young man thought that he loved his wife but when opportunity presented itself, he found himself in the arms of another. It was, however, a genuine love he felt for the other woman but it was wrong love. It wasn’t long before his secret was revealed and the deluded husband found himself face to face with his distraught wife. He repented but, sadly, their hearts had become hardened. Gradually their marriage flagged and amidst much pain and confusion the two came to the point of divorce. However, as Christians (indeed, this scenario does happen to Christians), they both knew divorce was not a viable option. One day, as they were discussing separation, they paused and looked into each other’s eyes. Just then the word of God came to them. God’s Word did what it always does best – it shattered their hardened hearts like a hammer shatters a rock in pieces: God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, and So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth, and I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

The hardest substance known to man became putty in the hands of the Word of God. A cold decision was then made to not separate. An equally cold decision was made to undo wrong love and be determined to love what God had ordained. God’s grace burst through as repentance and forgiveness abounded. Today, I’m very happy to report that this dear couple are more in love now than they were ever before, thriving as husband and wife

Dear God Tracker, has the Lord recently been speaking to you about something personal in your life? Have you heard the call of God to serve him fulltime; have you heard God’s call to totally surrender your life to him; have you sensed the nudge of the Holy Spirit to witness to a friend or work colleague? Dear God Tracker, have you been hardening your heart in your relationships, believing that you are always in the right? Remember, pride comes before a fall and God exalts those who humble themselves. Love is a choice! Choose to love as Christ loved you. God’s word to you is this: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” God looks at the heart and not the hands. Whatever you do, don’t allow your heart to harden.

Dear God-tracker

GOD-TRACKING IS LIVING BY FAITH UNDER THE BENEFITS OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS IN YOU

Romans 1:17
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.

Jesus is the blueprint of God for your life. The Bible says that we have all sinned and corrupted his perfect righteous image in which we were created. Even though God gave us the Law of Moses, it was rendered powerless in that it was weakened by the sinful nature. So, God sent his own Son, Jesus to reconcile us to himself. Because Jesus is God – God incarnate – he is and was sinless. Even so, God’s plan was to allow righteous Jesus to take the curse of sin when he died for us. You see, God imputed Jesus with your sin so that, by repentance and faith, you could be imputed with his righteousness. In Christ, you become the righteousness of God. Jesus in you is God’s original plan for your life.

Many people think they need to work hard to earn God’s favour, but this is impossible. God is so holy and righteous that we would need to become as he is in order to earn his favour. However, Jesus is already how God is, because Jesus is God in the flesh. Therefore, to become righteous, you and I need to intentionally repent of sin and then live by faith in God’s grace. The moment you truly repent of sin and admit your failings, you die to the old nature of sin. Then the moment you exercise faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus you put confidence in Christ and begin to live by his righteousness.

If you are in Christ you are a new creation, the old sinful life is gone and you have a new righteous life, in Christ. You were crucified with him when you confessed your sins and surrendered your life to God. It’s no longer the old you living in your body; it’s Christ living in you; and he is the righteousness of God! You see, the righteousness you now have in you is not your righteousness but it’s God’s righteousness in you.

Therefore, you can claim the benefits of the righteous. The Palms are packed with promises to the righteous:

“For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favour as with a shield,” (Psalm 5:11)

“The eyes of the Lord are towards the righteous and his ears towards their cry,” (Psalm 34:15)

“When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles,” (Psalm 34:17)

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all,” (Psalm 34:19)

“I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread,” (Psalm 37:25)

These are to mention but a few. However, we remind ourselves that we can only stand righteous before God, through Christ. That is, Jesus Christ is truly righteous and only by faith in his atoning death are we made righteous. Indeed, the righteous will live by faith!

God-tracking is living by faith under the benefits of God’s righteousness in you
