Heartfelt Prayer

Matthew 6:8
…for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

God-tracking is pouring your heart out in prayer.
When I was a child, I used to love building string telephones.  A friend and I would join two tin cans together with a string. Provided we kept the string taut, we could chat together over a few metres. Nowadays, kids simply send a text on their mobile phones. Where’s the fun in that?

Prayer is vital to a Christian’s life. Before a word finds its way to your lips your mind has experienced a thought, feeling or image. Words are formed in when the speech part of your brain translates that thought, feeling or image into language, and you pray. Words are simply the product of a thought, feeling or image. Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak.”

Prayer is the string – the conduit – that conducts your heartfelt thoughts, feelings or images to God. So, let’s be sure to keep that string taut!

God-tracking is pouring your heart out in prayer.

Forgive and be Forgiven

Matthew 6:14-15
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

God-tracking is relishing in forgiveness
In Scripture, we see how Jesus forgave people. For example, the woman caught in adultery and the criminal who was crucified with him. There is no sin too great to be forgiven. All sin is equal in God’s sight because God is infinitely good. And yet, if I confess my sin to him, God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse me.

However, there is one sin that can inhibit God’s forgiveness, and that is unforgiveness because unforgiveness insults God’s forgiveness. It’s like two people stranded in the desert dying of thirst. A man appears with a large pitcher of water, and the first man drinks all of it without offering any to his dying friend.

Unforgiveness will destroy the one holding on to it. If you’re harbouring unforgiveness,  come quickly to the feet of Jesus and forgive your brother. Do this you will know the liberty of forgiving and being forgiven.

God-tracking is relishing in forgiveness

And behold, I am with you always

God-tracking is facing every disaster in the knowledge that he is always in control.
My daughter Kerryn was once involved in a bad motor accident on a trip to New Zealand. Thankfully, she was not badly hurt, but her friend suffered a broken neck.

Living as Believers does not exempt us from disaster or suffering. But we are reinforced by the fact that God is always in control. In the Psalms, we read that God instructs his angels to protect us in times of disaster.

Be encouraged to never take your eyes off Jesus and to acknowledge God in all your ways. Trust him to direct your paths, especially through those disasters in life. I do not believe that God instigates calamity, but when calamity happens, he is faithful to lovingly deliver us from all evil.

By God’s grace, both Kerryn and her friend recovered well after their ordeal. All things work together for good to those who love God.

God-tracking is facing every disaster in the knowledge that he is always in control.

The Reality of Christ

Romans 8:5
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

God-tracking is following the reality of Christ.
Thinking about religious traditions, Paul writes, “These are a shadow of the things to come, but the reality belongs to Christ.” Paul was pointing out that the Old Testament law, together with its traditions, was simply a shadow reflecting the true reality of God’s righteousness as found in Christ. Paul was a devout Jew, yet he says that whatever credit he gained in his religious observances, he counted as nothing compared to the reality of knowing Christ.

The Bible tells me that, although perfect, the Law was weakened by my sinful nature. But Jesus was not sinful! Therefore, he fulfilled the requirements of the Law and bore the consequences of breaking the Law by dying on the cross. Therefore, only in Christ, who is the reality, are we no longer condemned by the Law but are set free to live out his righteousness by the Spirit.

God-tracking is following the reality of Christ.

James 1:6-8
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

God-tracking is being single-minded in even in the wildest of storms.
I remember once crossing the English Channel on a ferry in the worst storm I’ve ever experienced. The splash of the waves reached the window of my third-story vantage point. Through the haze of intense nausea, I noticed how these monsters were blown in every direction. Their crests were breaking, and their foam was being tossed back and forth by strong winds.

James wrote that the person who asks God to meet a need but doubts in his heart is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. This person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord; he is double-minded and unstable in all his ways.

Don’t be like the crests of those double-minded waves. Stand strong upon the promises that God has given you and, in faith, shout out, “I can and will do all things through Christ who strengthens me!”

God-tracking is being single-minded in even in the wildest of storms.

Psalm 27:4
One thing I have desired of the Lord,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,

God-tracking is dwelling in his presence, always.
King David was a great man. He was the only king of Israel who truly obeyed the decrees of the Lord until his dying day. David was no angel, but he loved the presence of God. David wrote, “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life.” David knew that the presence of God was always the place of his security, hope and rejuvenation.

Perhaps you find yourself in the thick of conflict or confusion today. If that’s true, then make a conscious effort to rise above your circumstances and seek the dwelling of the Lord in prayer. David spent many a day in the tabernacle, still before God when his soul was downcast. If you know Christ as Lord and Saviour, then your body has become the very temple of the Lord God Almighty. The dwelling of the Lord is a place of fragrant peace. So, rest in him today, wherever you are, and he will hide you under the shadow of his wings.

God-tracking is dwelling in his presence, always.

The Detours of Life

Matthew 5:10
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

God-tracking is remaining on track with God’s plans even through life’s detours.
I’ve discovered that God often takes us the long way around in tracking his perfect will for our lives. The Bible makes it clear that God knows the plans he has for us; plans for hope and a future. Scripture also says that if we acknowledge the Lord in all our ways, then he will direct our paths, even if those paths seem to make a detour. Only God knows how many lives we may touch in the process and how much our faith will grow as we learn to trust him. And all things work together for the good of those who acknowledge God.

Whatever difficulties or detours you may be experiencing today, you are still on track with God’s plans and his purposes for you, if you continue to acknowledge him in all your ways. If you do this, then you will always find yourself precisely where he wants you to be. Remember that he is your holy Guide, and he will never leave you nor forsake you even on the detours of life.

God-tracking is remaining on track with God’s plans even through life’s detours.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

God-tracking is standing sure with humble confidence.
I believe the time has come when we who believe in the scruples and absolutes of God’s word are being attacked for the ethics of our faith. I believe the era of true freedom of Christian belief has come to an end. But we are encouraged by Jesus’ words when he said, “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, the world hates you.” And he said, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Perhaps you’re facing opposition for your confession of God’s word today. It could be you’ve been accused of being dogmatic about a moral biblical precept. Or maybe you’re being ridiculed for your flat-line approach to a moral issue at work, at home or on the street. If that’s you, then let me encourage you to harbour no hidden selfish agenda in your heart and always walk in truth! God always vindicate the truth because Jesus is the Truth!

Remain sure of your convictions and walk in humble truth.

God-tracking is standing sure with humble confidence.

Isaiah 24:1
O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.

God’s word to you today: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” The light of the mighty sun shining upon the earth produces shadows that shift and change with every passing minute, but the great and mighty Father of heavenly lights casts no shifting shadow with his glorious light. What he promises today, he fulfils tomorrow. The Bible says that he is faithful and that his love endures forever. His love never changes like shifting shadows.

Wherever you find yourself in your Christian walk, know that he will never abandon you. You can endure every trial and every affliction, because his love is your endurance. Your circumstances may change, but your Lord’s love and grace will never move like shifting shadows. So, hold fast to his promises and remain faithful in constant fellowship with his Spirit.

God-tracking is remaining secure despite shifting shadows.

A Sublime Symphony

Ephesians 2:10
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Orchestral arrangement involves using an array of instruments organised in such a way as to appropriately interpret the composer’s meaning of the piece. Arranging an orchestral performance of a single score of Beethoven, for instance, requires about 40 instruments to create a symphonic masterpiece.

I’ve discovered that, as I track God’s plans for my life, he composes new stories for me to play upon the strings of daily life. However, sometimes, I find myself confronted with a circumstance where it’s obvious that God was not the original composer. Yet, if I continue to acknowledge him in all my ways, my Father will arrange every nuance of my life to coincide with his sublime symphony.

Author, Stuart Windsor said, “I pondered the way God knits together the often chaotic threads of life to make things happen his way.” Only Jesus can turn your discord into a sublime symphony.

God-tracking is allowing God to orchestrate your life.

God-tracking is waiting patiently for your time to come.
Many first-time parents wait impatiently for the arrival of that first newborn. The 9 months from those first words, “I’m pregnant,” to the first breath of that little one seemed to me to be the longest months of my life. The parents (especially mom) chomp at the bit, waiting – craving – that moment. But that first breath is planned by God.

It could be that you are anticipating a move or a change of some sort and have become weary in waiting. A baby will not be born normally until its body is ready.  God knows when you will be ready to make that move. The moment of new life is in God’s hands. If you continue to acknowledge the Lord God in all your plans and seek first his goodness, then He will open that door at exactly the right time, and you will be wildly blessed!

God-tracking is waiting patiently for your time to come.

Colossians 3:23
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men

God-tracking is a daily God-consciousness.
A while back, I sensed the Holy Spirit tell me to give up 7 days as a kind of fast by focusing on his presence. I was to commit every day of the week to consciously seeking him and his touch on all I was doing.

As the week progressed, it took serious self-discipline to stop thinking about myself. Every time I became distracted, the Holy Spirit would draw me back to being conscious of his presence. I needed to be wholly conscious of God.

I discovered the importance of tracking God’s will in every nuisance of daily life. Whatever I do, I should do in the name of Jesus. My life is his, and my ambition should be to remain in his will. The Bible reminds us to seek first God’s domain and his goodness in our lives. Only then can we begin to realise his daily blessings and provision.

God-tracking is a daily God-consciousness.

“But His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not.”

God-tracking is fanning the flames.
The prophet Jeremiah said, “His word was in my heart like a burning fire.” He knew what it was like
to be consumed by the zeal of the Lord. Though his word was harsh and condemning, Jeremiah was compelled to deliver the word of God even though his outspokenness would result in his persecution.

Jeremiah was sold-out for God. The fire shut up in his bones prohibited him from being indifferent or lethargic. He said, “His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back and I could not.”

Is there a fire burning in your heart? Are you filled with the zeal of the Lord like Jeremiah? If so, then allow that fire to consume you. Kindle the flames of worship, prayer, fellowship and word that the Lord has shut up in your heart.

2 Corinthians 2:14
Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

In Exodus, we read how the Lord told Moses to mix fragrant ingredients to form the oil to anoint the artefacts of the temple. This oil included myrrh, cinnamon and sweet-smelling cane. Anyone who worked in the temple would come out smelling like sweet herbs. It was the fragrance of worship.

Scripture tells us that those who know Jesus as Saviour will gain the aroma of the knowledge of Christ. Wherever they go, they will spread that fragrance. However, a person emanating the fragrance of Christ becomes a stench in the nostrils of those who do not know Christ. But when a worshipper of God is among fellow worshippers, his fragrance is the sweet smell of worship, like the scent of myrrh, cinnamon and sweet-smelling cane.

So, take courage when someone tells you that you’re getting up their nose. To those who love the Lord, you are the pleasant fragrance of life, but in the world, your fragrance will cause offence.

God-tracking is coming out smelling like Christ.

Colossians 1:23(a)
…if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast…

A while back, I was driving home one afternoon, pondering life (as one does). I was thinking about my family, my work, my past and the prospects of my future when suddenly it dawned on me that it seemed as though I was tracing the outline of a picture of my life through old-fashioned tracing paper. You know the type. It’s sort of greyish in colour and slightly transparent. I used tracing paper when I was a child for school projects. I’d find a good picture for my project and place the tracing paper over the picture, then, armed with an FF pencil, I’d trace the dim outline of the picture that I could see through the tracing paper. Then I’d transfer the image to my project. Nowadays, of course, kids simply copy and paste and print from the World Wide Web.

The more I thought about this analogy, the more it dawned on me that if I could see my whole life laid out neatly before me with all the details in place then what part would faith play in the great scheme of God’s masterpiece of who I am? And without faith we cannot please God. Faith is required to seek and track God’s plans, like using a pencil to trace the outline of an image through tracing paper. Faith looks forward to God’s reward; faith anticipates God’s provision, and faith is the substance of things hoped for. The Apostle Paul once said, “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.” Indeed, we live by faith and not by sight!

Does it ever seem to you as though you’re looking at your life through tracing paper, as though all you can see is a basic, dim outline of the image before you? You do believe that God has painted a masterpiece of who you are, but from where you’re standing, all you can see are greyed-out and obscured outlines. Ultimately, the Lord does have your life’s track clearly laid down before you, but until you trace every step by faith, you will not discover the beauty of the image of the masterpiece called you.

God-tracking is tracing the obscured picture of your life by faith.

“O Lord, sometimes I get so frustrated with life because I cannot see the wood for the trees. It seems that all I can see before me are greyed-out borders and obscured details. Philippians 1:6
…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

God-tracking is facing the future with peaceful confidence
Here’s wishing you and yours a truly hope-filled and blessed 2026. One thing I have learned, as I have tracked the plans of God throughout my life, is this: God’s new is always new, and in this New Year, I believe He is doing a new thing in your life. Be encouraged to live expectantly of God’s plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

In a world faced with terrorism, rampant secularism and Christian persecution and war, it’s so good to know that the Lord our God has made a way for us to walk in peace and hope. In Christ, we enjoy a surpassing peace; not peace as the world knows it, but a deep inner peace in whatever conflict we may face. And the hope that he has given us comes from the faith generated by the words of Jesus, the author and perfecter of our lives.

Jesus faced opposition on every side, yet he rested in God’s perfect will for his life even when it cost him his life on the cross. However, Jesus faced crucifixion in full confidence that the Spirit of God would raise him from the dead and seat him at the right hand of God in glory. We are called follow this example by fixing our eyes on Jesus and not on the difficulties surrounding us, gleaning from the faith his word produces in us.

God-tracking, therefore, is facing every new day and every new year and every new challenge with faith and confidence that he will guide us through troubled, needy times with great peace, in the hope of his good plans for our lives. Corrie Ten Boom said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” If 2026 appears anything less than rosy from where you’re standing today, then don’t give up but look up into the eyes of Jesus and say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

“If you would simply seek God by acknowledging him in all your ways and trusting him to direct your future, then there will be nothing that will inhibit his purposes from unfolding in your life.”

Isaiah 54:2
“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.”

Lee de Forest, inventor of the cathode ray tube, was once heard to say, “Theoretically, television may be feasible, but I consider it an impossibility - a development which we should waste little time dreaming about.” Then there was Thomas Watson, Chairman of the Board of IBM in 1943, who said, “I think there is a world market for about five computers.” Famous last words, indeed!

Perhaps you’re contemplating your future today. It could be that from where you’re standing, prospects of a bright new tomorrow seem a little bleak. If so, then let me encourage you to look beyond the worn-out tools that clutter your workbench and gaze at that beautiful prototype in the mirror; that masterpiece of you that God has been building since the day you were born. Forest was a great inventor, and Watson a great entrepreneur, but neither looked further than their noses. Their futures were indeed bright, but they missed the point. Need I point out the success of both television and the computer?

Your Lord Creator has great plans for your life, and his plans are for your hope and future. God is the greatest inventor of all, and he has the ways and means of marketing his strategies beyond all your expectations. You are a unique prototype of God’s purposes at home, in business, at school, at church and in your community. If you would simply seek God by acknowledging him in all your ways and trusting him to direct your future, then there will be nothing that will inhibit his purposes from unfolding in your life.

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet his unfailing love for you will not be shaken, nor his covenant of peace be removed. And no weapon forged against you will prevail; you will refute every tongue that accuses you!

So, never doubt the Creator’s prowess when it comes to inventing the masterpiece of you. Take your eyes off the obstacles of doubt and fear and look up into the eyes of your great Designer who knows the plans he has for you. Resist the devil’s lies and then get out there and chase the dream that God has stored up for your tomorrow! As the author, Frank Peretti said, “God has created us in his image and put each of us here on earth for specific purposes. That means every human being has intrinsic value, preciousness, meaning and dignity.”

God-tracking is acknowledging the Designer’s prototype of you.

Don’t Give Up, Look Up & Pray

“I trust you to direct the outcome of my life for the good no matter what opposition or doubt sweeps my way.”

“O Lord, I’m sorry for taking my eyes off the beauty of what you’re doing in my life. Today I choose to fix my eyes on Jesus and his design for my life by acknowledging God in all my ways: my relationships, my education, my business, my recreation and especially my plans for the future. You are my Lord and my guide; my Inventor and my Designer. I trust you to direct the outcome of my life for the good no matter what opposition or doubt sweeps my way. Amen.”
