A while back, I sensed the Holy Spirit tell me to give up 7 days as a kind of fast by focusing on his presence. I was to commit every day of the week to consciously seeking him and his touch on all I was doing.

As the week progressed, it took serious self-discipline to stop thinking about myself. Every time I became distracted, the Holy Spirit would draw me back to being conscious of his presence. I needed to be wholly conscious of God.

I discovered the importance of tracking God’s will in every nuisance of daily life. Whatever I do, I should do in the name of Jesus. My life is his, and my ambition should be to remain in his will. The Bible reminds us to seek first God’s domain and his goodness in our lives. Only then can we begin to realise his daily blessings and provision.

God-tracking is a daily God-consciousness.

…looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith

I sensed that God wanted me to enter the ministry when I left school but I ignored it. Instead, I attempted to achieve a bachelor of science degree at university. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in my attempt. However, it was during this year that I heard the distinct call of God into Christian ministry. All other ambitions faded into oblivion. My sole aspiration was to become a full-time minister. Finally, ten years after leaving school, God opened the door for me to enter the ministry.

Sadly, however, I became consumed by my ambition to do the work of the Lord, taking my eyes off the Lord of the work. Nothing else was important to me. I had my opinions and that’s all that mattered. My marriage began to flounder. My eyes were fixed on the job. I’d lost the purpose of my calling: to first seek the kingdom and righteousness of God.

Jesus had a calling on his life. He had the most supreme calling any man could have. Jesus was called to be Saviour of the world. His sole ambition was to do the will of his Father. At about the age of 33, after completing his work as a teacher and healer, Jesus, the Son of God, was confronted with a choice: to do or reject the will of his Father. In Gethsemane, he cried out, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup from me.” I believe this was one of the final temptations that Jesus faced. But then he adds, “Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, laid aside all natural ambition to become the great political reformer that his disciples thought he’d become. Jesus rejected the temptation to express his own opinion or follow any other ambition save that of fulfilling the purposes of God. He practiced what he preached. He sought first the kingdom of God.

Jesus is called the author and finisher of our faith. He is our example of a godly lifestyle. We are all called to be Christlike. Therefore, let’s be encouraged to lay aside all selfish ambition and egotistical desires in favour of seeking first the purposes of God, knowing that, as we do, all that we will ever need for life and living will be added to us as well.

God-tracking is submitting solely to his Kingdom purposes.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Just like the ebb and flow of many phenomena in nature, so the economics of humanity ebbs and flows with regularity. We’re all happy when the world markets flow but panic when there is a global economic ebb.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we don’t place our confidence in man’s monetary management. Jesus was a great economist. He addressed the issues of everyday needs by saying things like, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on,” adding “your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” By the Holy Spirit Apostle Paul wrote, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

Indeed, stock markets are teetering, pension schemes are wobbling and currency markets are fluctuating but our confidence is not in such things. Our confidence is in the Creator. At a time of economic upheaval, don’t give up, look up and set your mind on things above not on earthly things. Lift up your eyes. Your help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.

I encourage you this week, during the global economic crisis, to trust God to continually meet your needs. The world markets are not your source. Your source is God’s glorious riches in Christ Jesus. You are his little one and your Father knows that you need all these things. His promise to you today is, all these things you need for life and living shall be added to you if you first focus on his righteousness and his kingdom principles; his purposes for your life.

God-tracking is having confidence in the economics of Glory.

I lift up my eyes above the newspapers and TV screen to fix them on Jesus who meets my needs. I seek first your kingdom purposes for my life. I have a bank account in the bank of Glory! So, I place my confidence in you, O Lord, to meet all my needs according to your riches in glory, by Christ Jesus. Amen.”

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Jesus was standing at the base of the natural amphitheatre of the hills along the banks of Lake Tiberias. It was a clear day and his voice carried far into the large crowd up the slope above. He was delivering his most profound oration known as the Sermon on the Mount. He said, “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

The kingdom of a king is his domain, that is, it is all that pertains to him and his influence. The king sets the standards and ethos of his domain, including its law. Our God is our king. His standards and ethos are supreme and pure and his law is just. Firstly, Jesus instructed us to put the kingdom of God first. That is, we are to seek to live by his standards, ethos and law.

Secondly, Jesus instructed us to also put God’s righteousness first. Righteousness is the quality of God’s kingdom. Our God is supremely righteous. In him, there is no wrong, sin, evil or depravity. All he does and all he is is absolutely good. We are to seek to live by God’s glorious qualities. But how is this possible, for we have come short of his glory?

Listen, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Jesus is God in the flesh and, therefore, without sin. Jesus, the Word of God, became flesh to bear the consequence of sin as our proxy when he died on the cross. Through faith in him, we are reconciled to the kingdom and righteousness of God. Through faith in him we live by his kingdom standards, ethos and law. By faith in him, we live by God’s glorious righteous qualities.

Jesus laid aside his glory to reconcile us to God. So, let us lay aside our egoistical desires without compromise and put God’s kingdom and his righteousness first. The result? All you worry about for life and living will be added to you as well.

GOD-TRACKING IS CASTING YOUR CARES ON JESUS, ALWAYS

“So, if you carry the cares of the world on your shoulders then stop doing what you’re doing right now and do some care-casting.”

Psalm 28:7
The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.

I went for a walk the other day with the cares of the world on my shoulders. I was anxious about many things that day: an ache in my knee, cares about other people’s cares, worry about financial issues. As I walked, I prayed out loud for these needs (thankfully I was alone on a country path). I found myself complaining to God about mistakes I’d made in the past and disappointments clouding my vision. The more I grumbled and worried the tighter the knot became in my belly until I almost audibly heard the voice of the Holy Spirit say, “Cast your cares upon me!” Immediately I stopped, took out my mobile phone (it has a notepad app on it) and made a list of all that I was anxious about. Under a tree on the side of a hill in the Worcestershire countryside that day, I did some care-casting!

Jesus told us not to worry about tomorrow. He told us to look at nature and see how God, in his creative love and wisdom, takes care of the needs of the birds or the air and the flowers of the field. “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” he said. “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Jesus then called us to firstly focus on God’s kingdom and his righteousness. He promised that if we do this then all that we are worried about would simply fall into place. In other words, if you and I become concerned about the cares of this world then they will consume us! However, if we seek God’s stuff first then we will enjoy rest and reward.

So, if you carry the cares of the world on your shoulders then stop doing what you’re doing right now and do some care-casting. Pray your needs through and believe that the Lord is your strength and your shield. Then fix your eyes on the kingdom and goodness of God. If you trust in him then he will help and provide for you every step of the way.

God-tracking is casting your cares on Jesus, always.

“Dear Lord and God, I’m sorry for worrying so much. I realise that I have been consumed by the cares of this world instead of seeking first the things of your kingdom. Today, I lay down all my worries, cares and concerns at your feet. Dear Lord and God, today I do some care-casting in Jesus’ name! I cast my cares on you: every financial need, every health concern, every worry about a loved one, every disappointment, every fear of what the future may hold and every offence that I have suffered at the criticisms of others. I do not give up, but I rather look up into your eyes for help and my purpose. Thank you that you know my tomorrow and have a plan for my good future. Tonight, I will sleep in peace because you are my hope. Amen.”

Dear God-tracker

GOD-TRACKING IS A 3-PART MISSION: TO INTERACT, IMPACT AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE TO BE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST

…but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Interact, impact and influence people to be true followers of Jesus Christ. This has been my mission statement for many years. Jesus practiced this process when he walked on earth. He interacted with and impacted the crowds through miracles and healings and he influenced them by his parables and teaching until they became his followers. Granted, at the end of his earthly life, everyone turned away from him, but only to open the way for his greatest impact of all – the cross. The impact of the cross has influenced billions of people, though the ages, to be his true followers.

Jesus had his own mission statement, which lines up well with this. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,” he said, quoting from the prophet Isaiah, “because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour.” Several times, Jesus sent out his followers with the same commission. For instance, on one occasion he sent out his 12 closest disciples with this directive: “And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons.”

God-tacking involves being influenced to follow Christ. God-tracking involves following his example and instructions. You and I, as trackers of the will of God, are commissioned to go into all the world and influence people to be disciples of Jesus. But how can we influence them unless we make an impact on their lives? And how can we impact them unless we interact with them in the first place. Today I encourage us to interact, impact and influence our friends, our family and our colleagues to be true followers of Jesus Christ, by proclaiming liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind; by setting at liberty those who are oppressed; by proclaiming the year of the Lord's favour.
