Depression can often develop out of guilt, disappointment, anxiety, bereavement or low self-esteem. Everyone experiences emotions like these from time to time, but it’s when these emotions become malignant that depression sets into the soul. Often, a doctor will prescribe drugs to deal with depression, but most doctors are now suggesting talking therapy. Talking out your problems is a very powerful treatment for depression.

Jesus said, “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” If you’re suffering anxiety and depression today, be encouraged to pour out your heart to a compassionate confidant. However, there is another outlet for your confessions that is probably more powerful: prayer.

Word of God is sharper than a double-edged sword; it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit. Talking out your problems to God and a friend will start the healing process, and the Word of God will complete it.

God-tracking is pouring your heart out to Jesus.

A Fire Shut Up in My Bones

Jeremiah 20:9
“But His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not.”

The prophet Jeremiah said, “His word was in my heart like a burning fire.” He knew what it was like
to be consumed by the zeal of the Lord. Though his word was harsh and condemning, Jeremiah was compelled to deliver the word of God even though his outspokenness would result in his persecution.

Jeremiah was sold-out for God. The fire shut up in his bones prohibited him from being indifferent or lethargic. He said, “His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back and I could not.”

Is there a fire burning in your heart? Are you filled with the zeal of the Lord like Jeremiah? If so, then allow that fire to consume you. Kindle the flames of worship, prayer, fellowship and word that the Lord has shut up in your heart.

God-tracking is fanning the flames.

But He said to them, “Where is your faith?”

Jesus and his disciples were crossing Lake Tiberias to minister in the province of the Gadarenes. These
men were committed to Jesus and his ministry. They knew God had a purpose for them to work alongside Jesus as he preached the good news of the Kingdom of God.

Transversing Tiberias is a fair distance for a small sailboat. Halfway through the trip a violent storm arose and waves began to swamp the boat. Jesus was asleep at the stern. Waking him, they yelled, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”  Jesus calmly rebuked the storm and the waves subsided. Then, turning to his men he said. “Where is your faith?”

Prior to this event Jesus had been ministering extensively. His disciples had witnessed many miracles and sat under his profound teaching. Jesus had selected these 12 diverse characters to stand by him in his work. God had a plan and a purpose for each of these men, who, ultimately, would take the gospel to the ends of the earth. Yet, when the storm arose, they doubted their calling, believing they would all die. Despite the storms, the difficulties and the opposition they faced, they should have realised that God’s purposes would prevail for each of them. They needed faith in their calling.

God knows the plans he has for you. His plans are for your success and blessing, for a hope and a future. God has a calling on your life. If you continue to walk by faith, and not by sight, then you will flow in the plans and purposes of God. Acknowledging him in all your ways will cause his purposes to unfold in your life. If God has called you then he will watch over his calling in your life, to perform it. No matter the storm, have faith in his calling.

God-tracking is faith in the calling of God.

Don’t Give Up, Look Up & Pray

“I put my faith in your calling and trust you to bring me to the over side of the lake, safely.”

“Father, I know you have a plan for my life. Dear God, I believe your purposes will prevail no matter the storms I face. You have called me to serve you and I believe that you will watch over your calling on my life to perform it. Forgive me for taking my eyes off you and looking at the waves swamping my boat. Despite the oppositions I face, I put my faith in your calling and trust you to bring me to the over side of the lake, safely. Amen.”

He is your praise, and he is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen.

I’d toddled off to the kitchen to make a steaming beverage for my family. In the lounge were Karen, my wife, Ryan and Amy, my son and daughter-in-law, and their children Ruben, Grace and Zac. As I waited for the kettle to boil, I was thinking about life. “Lord,” I prayed quietly, “I know you’re a miracle-working God yet I’ve not seen any healings.” Like the next guy, I have often prayed for healing and I know God heals but at that moment I had forgotten the goodness of the God I serve and I was absorbed by my doubts. Turning my back on the kettle I grumbled, “Lord, I wish I could just see a miracle.”

Just then, my 11-year-old grandson, Ruben popped his head out the lounge door and looked at me. He then withdrew back into the lounge without uttering a word. Instantly the Holy Spirit reminded me of an awesome healing miracle that my eyes had seen.

When Ruben was a mere 3 weeks old he was rushed to hospital with suspected sepsis. Sepsis is extremely dangerous for a small infant. Karen and I hurried to the hospital to be with Amy and Ryan and to pray for little Ruben. Ruben was fitting uncontrollably. Then the unimaginable happened, he stopped breathing. Medics rushed to his side to resuscitate him. After he was resuscitated, they made plans to transfer Ruben to an intensive care unit in a specialised children’s hospital. We continued to pray and trust God for a miracle. There he was, his small form, infiltrated by a respirator and myriad monitoring machines.

Twenty-four hours later, Karen and I visited him again. To our amazement, the cables and tubes had been removed. “He’s on the mend,” said the ICU sister. “I have never seen such a quick turnaround in all my working life,” she added. Ruben was healed… miraculously!

Ruben said nothing to me that day when he looked at me from the lounge. I believe the Holy Spirit used him to simply pry me from my moping doubts and remind me that he is my God who has done great and awesome things for me, which my eyes have seen.

We serve a miracle-working God. There is nothing too difficult for the Lord. Expel those doubts and remind yourself of the miracles and the good things he has done for you. He can turn your mourning into dancing and your darkest night into day.

God-tracking is remembering the things he has done.

You Have Nothing to Defend

“No matter what happens, you have nothing to defend. God is watching over his perfect plan for you to perform it in his time. After all, your work is not your own, but God’s.”

Jeremiah 1:12 (NIV)
The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.

Steve was stunned. His boss, Pete, sat with hands clasped across the desk from him, waiting for a response. “But I’ve given the best part of my working life to this job,” Steve finally replied. “I know, Steve,” said Pete, “But management has decided to close down your department. There’s nothing more I can do. You will receive a severance package. I know it’s difficult but I believe God is in control.”

For the past 10 years, Steve had been working behind the scenes for a Christian missionary agency in support of God’s people out in the field. Now, as he walked away from Pete’s office, a feeling of dejected and emptiness overcame him. Back at his workstation, Steve prayed, “Dear God, I have always acknowledged you in all my ways and trusted you to direct the outcome of all my endeavours. So, I know this can only be according to your plan for my life. I believe you called me to this work so I trust you to watch over your calling on my life, no matter what happens.”

Scripture tells us that God watches over his word to fulfil it. When God gives us his word and calls us to ministry, he will defend that calling. We read in Isaiah that God’s word will not return to him without producing the fruit that he intended. When something happens to jeopardise the work God has called us to, we can be assured that God will, nevertheless, guard that calling. It was not up to Steve to safeguard his work or defend his calling but rather to rest in the fact that God would open the next door for him in his time. Because Steve had continually acknowledged the Lord in all he did, God was watching over Steve’s calling. He had nothing to prove and nothing to defend. After all, Steve’s work was not his own, but God’s.

It could be that someone has stripped you of your life’s ambition or it could be that you’ve been abandoned by someone you once trusted and you’re feeling dejected and empty. Take a moment to acknowledge God; acknowledge his foreknowledge of this moment and surrender your fight to him. Acknowledging God results in him directing your life’s path. Therefore, come to Jesus and rest in his plan for you at this time. He will certainly open new and wonderful opportunities for you in ways you could never have imagined. No matter what happens, you have nothing to defend. God is watching over his perfect plan for you to perform it in his time. After all, your work is not your own, but God’s.

After a time of faithful waiting and seeking the face of Jesus, Steve went on to pastor a growing church that impacted his community in ways he would never have dreamed.

God-tracking is resting in God’s plan for your life, no matter what happens.

“I believe that you will watch over and defend your word to me I pray that we, your Body, will become lost in the magnificence of your majesty as we worship you in spirit and in truth.”

”Father God I am feeling miserable and alone today. I have been rejected and overlooked in my work and relationships. I believe that you have called me to serve you in all that I do. Therefore, I acknowledge your knowledge of my situation and I continue to acknowledge you in every aspect of my life. I surrender my effort of defending my work and relationships to you. I believe that you will watch over and defend your word to me. I come to you and lay down my burden, resting in your purposes for my life. I trust you to fulfil your calling on my life, in your time.
