Psalm 27:1(a)
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?

The king sat alone in the Tabernacle's outer courts, praying. Whenever his enemies rose up against him and the responsibilities of governing his people with wisdom and grace took their toll, David would come down from Jerusalem and just sit quietly in the Tabernacle to meditate upon the goodness of God. That day, the king had commanded his guards to remain outside the tabernacle boundary and had requested that the priests leave him alone for a while, as he always did when he visited God’s dwelling. King David was not a priest, so he was not permitted into the holy place, but he sat down on the ground beside the altar at the edge of the tent where he could smell the fragrances of myrrh, cinnamon, cane and cassia coming from within. David loved these moments. There, in the dust of the earth, he began tracing out the words, “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life…”

King David was a great man. He was the only king of Israel who had truly obeyed the decrees of the Lord until his dying day. David was no angel, mind you. As a great warrior, he had much blood on his hands, and he’d committed murder and adultery. Yet David’s heart was pure, and he was quick to repent of his sins. In fact, it is written of King David that he was the apple of God’s eye. Here we see David pursuing his greatest pleasure – to reside in the dwelling of God. In the midst of turmoil and violence; in the thick of conflict and war King David knew that the Lord’s presence was his source and resource. The presence of God – in prayer – was always the place of his security, hope and rejuvenation.

Perhaps you find yourself in the thick of conflict or confusion today. Perhaps, when you look back over the past few months or years, all you can see is disappointment and failure. Well, if that’s you, then don’t give up, look up! Make a conscious effort to rise and seek the dwelling of the Lord in prayer. David spent many a day in the Tabernacle, still before his God when his soul was downcast. The dwelling of the Lord is a place of fragrant peace. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” And the dwelling place of God is in your heart. If you know Christ as Lord and Saviour, then your body has become the very temple of the Lord God Almighty! So, rest in him today wherever you are, and he will hide you in the shadow of his wings on the day of trouble.

God-tracking is dwelling in the presence of God, always.

Don’t Give Up, Look Up & Pray

“Help me to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.”

“Father God, I admit that I am feeling a bit spiritually destitute at the moment. I confess that I have not spent enough time in your presence, in prayer. I know that I can never leave your omnipresence, but today I choose to seek your presence afresh! I want to rest in the shadow of your tent, in the fragrance of your company. I choose to cease my struggle with daily issues and rather be still before you. I shut off the clatter of noise that the world thrusts at me and rest in the peace that only Jesus gives. Help me to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life. Amen.”

“If you have acknowledged Jesus Christ as your Lord and have surrendered your life to him, then you can be sure that he will give his angels charge over you.”

Exodus 23:20
“Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.”

Scripture makes it clear that the angels are God’s ministering spirits, given charge to minister to you and me who will inherit salvation. That is, God created these amazing beings to serve us according to God’s purposes. Angles are given orders concerning us to guard us and physically intervene in our circumstances to ensure our safety and the execution of God’s perfect will.

Some years back my wife Karen, my daughter Kerryn and I were touring the Greek Isles. We hired a small car to explore Naxos. It was a lovely day. As we circumnavigated the small island, we ended up on a very narrow two-way road with a rock face to the left of the road and a long drop to the right. Coming round a bend we were confronted by a large agricultural tractor on our side of the road, headed directly at us at 40 miles per hour. The tractor was overtaking a large truck, which was on the opposite side of the road. Here I was, with my wife and daughter in the car, facing a large vehicle bearing down towards us. I could not pass the truck to the left because of the rock face and if I swerved right to avoid the tractor in front of me, we would surely fall off the drop to the right. I swerved right. There was no room for our car to fit the narrow shoulder of the road. A second later I swerved back again onto the road. We passed the oncoming tractor safely. We should have fallen down that precipice. Undoubtedly the two right wheels of our car passed off the edge of the road. Yet, we were safe. Angels? Probably. He shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.

If you have acknowledged Jesus Christ as your Lord and have surrendered your life to him, then you can be sure that he will give his angels charge over you. They are ministering spirits sent to minister to those who will inherit salvation. They will keep you in your way and bring you safely into the place which the Lord has prepared for you.

God-tracking is confidence in his angelic guard.

Power and Love and a Sound Mind

“In your presence I have power and love and a sound mind. Your banner over me is love. And your love casts out all fear!”

2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Pete woke up in a very low mood. He’d been battling with anxiety and depression for a few years. His company had shut down his department some years back and Pete was paid off. Depression had crept in. He had a new job now and no real reason to be down but he was. A fear had gripped his heart that it might happen again. “Dear Lord,” he cried, “I can’t work out why I’m so down. I know I’m secure but this anxiety keeps gripping me. I have a wife and kids, dear Lord. I need this job.” Glancing down into his Bible the words, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind,” jumped off the page. 

Depression and anxiety are pandemic mental illnesses in our day and age. More and more people I talk to are suffering with mental health issues, consumed with fears and worries about their personal security and livelihood, not to mention the state of the world at present. In reality, these conditions are nothing new. People in Jesus’ day faced the same issues. Perhaps this is why he taught, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.”

Pete was encouraged by the words he read and searched further in his handbook of life, the Bible. He read: “He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.” Again, the Holy Spirit quickened God’s word… “A garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness! Yes, that’s what I need. I resist this heaviness in Jesus’ name,” said Pete, “and I don a garment of praise. Praise your name, O Lord! You are holy and you inhabit the praises of your people. Therefore, I know my praise carries your presence. In your presence I have power and love and a sound mind. Your banner over me is love. And your love casts out all fear!” Pete’s low mood melted away. He was filled with the joy of the Lord.

“No matter what happens, you have nothing to defend. God is watching over his perfect plan for you to perform it in his time. After all, your work is not your own, but God’s.”

Jeremiah 1:12 (NIV)
The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.

Steve was stunned. His boss, Pete, sat with hands clasped across the desk from him, waiting for a response. “But I’ve given the best part of my working life to this job,” Steve finally replied. “I know, Steve,” said Pete, “But management has decided to close down your department. There’s nothing more I can do. You will receive a severance package. I know it’s difficult but I believe God is in control.”

For the past 10 years, Steve had been working behind the scenes for a Christian missionary agency in support of God’s people out in the field. Now, as he walked away from Pete’s office, a feeling of dejected and emptiness overcame him. Back at his workstation, Steve prayed, “Dear God, I have always acknowledged you in all my ways and trusted you to direct the outcome of all my endeavours. So, I know this can only be according to your plan for my life. I believe you called me to this work so I trust you to watch over your calling on my life, no matter what happens.”

Scripture tells us that God watches over his word to fulfil it. When God gives us his word and calls us to ministry, he will defend that calling. We read in Isaiah that God’s word will not return to him without producing the fruit that he intended. When something happens to jeopardise the work God has called us to, we can be assured that God will, nevertheless, guard that calling. It was not up to Steve to safeguard his work or defend his calling but rather to rest in the fact that God would open the next door for him in his time. Because Steve had continually acknowledged the Lord in all he did, God was watching over Steve’s calling. He had nothing to prove and nothing to defend. After all, Steve’s work was not his own, but God’s.

It could be that someone has stripped you of your life’s ambition or it could be that you’ve been abandoned by someone you once trusted and you’re feeling dejected and empty. Take a moment to acknowledge God; acknowledge his foreknowledge of this moment and surrender your fight to him. Acknowledging God results in him directing your life’s path. Therefore, come to Jesus and rest in his plan for you at this time. He will certainly open new and wonderful opportunities for you in ways you could never have imagined. No matter what happens, you have nothing to defend. God is watching over his perfect plan for you to perform it in his time. After all, your work is not your own, but God’s.

After a time of faithful waiting and seeking the face of Jesus, Steve went on to pastor a growing church that impacted his community in ways he would never have dreamed.

God-tracking is resting in God’s plan for your life, no matter what happens.

”Father God I am feeling miserable and alone today. I have been rejected and overlooked in my work and relationships. I believe that you have called me to serve you in all that I do. Therefore, I acknowledge your knowledge of my situation and I continue to acknowledge you in every aspect of my life. I surrender my effort of defending my work and relationships to you. I believe that you will watch over and defend your word to me. I come to you and lay down my burden, resting in your purposes for my life. I trust you to fulfil your calling on my life, in your time. A Place of Peace and Security

“Renew your mind by his word and you will discern that perfect will of God. Remain in God’s will and you will remain in a place of peace and security, making and an impact on your world.”

Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

This Christian motivational thought is concerned with helping the reader seek and track the will of God. God’s will is always a place of peace and security. If you remain in the centre of God’s will you will impact your world, something that the enemy of our souls, Satan, will do all he can to prevent.

Doreen was a tender child. She loved her mom and dad very much. The family lived on the East End of London during the time of the Second World War. Life was not easy. Sadly, when Doreen was 11-years old, her mom walked out on the family after her dad had an affair. The new woman in her father’s life was abusive and bullied Doreen badly. Gradually her esteem was so stripped away that she found herself lost to the evils of witchcraft. But God had a plan for this little life. Doreen later discovered the love and power of the Lord and gave her life to Jesus. Repenting of her black crafts Doreen discovered the peace and security of following God’s will for her life. Doreen Irvine tells her story in the book From Witchcraft to Christ, a book that has had a great impact on the world.

Psalm 143 is a prayer of another person who was bullied and abused, that of David. As a young man, David was anointed king of Israel. However, King Saul was still on the throne. Saul was not a nice guy and sought to take David’s life. David endured his abuse for many years during which time he wrote many psalms. But God had a plan for this young life, too. David walked in God’s will despite the opposition he faced. Here he found peace and security. When he was downcast, he placed his hope in the Lord. David had a profound impact on the world, becoming the greatest king Israel ever had and the descendent of Messiah.

Perhaps you find yourself in a predicament like Doreen Irvine or King David. It could be that you have also been being bullied or abused. You may have faced countless events in your life where the enemy of your soul, Satan, was intent on dragging you away from God’s will. God’s word for you today is, nothing can ever separate you from his love. His will is for you is to acknowledge him in all your ways. Do this and he will direct your life’s track according to his will. Seek first his kingdom principles and his goodness. Do this and he will provide all you’ll ever need for life and living. Renew your mind by his word and you will discern that perfect will of God. Remain in God’s will and you will remain in a place of peace and security, making and an impact on your world.

God-tracking is remaining in God’s will despite the opposition.

Today, I apologise for ever taking my eyes off Jesus and looking down at my circumstances. I choose now to not give up but look up as I surrender my will to do your will. I acknowledge your presence and purposes for every avenue of my life and seek to live according to your kingdom principles. Thank you for your promise that you will never leave me and thank you for the peace and security of walking in your will. Amen.”
