Matthew 6:14-15
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

In Scripture, we see how Jesus forgave people. For example, the woman caught in adultery and the criminal who was crucified with him. There is no sin too great to be forgiven. All sin is equal in God’s sight because God is infinitely good. And yet, if I confess my sin to him, God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse me.

However, there is one sin that can inhibit God’s forgiveness, and that is unforgiveness because unforgiveness insults God’s forgiveness. It’s like two people stranded in the desert dying of thirst. A man appears with a large pitcher of water, and the first man drinks all of it without offering any to his dying friend.

Unforgiveness will destroy the one holding on to it. If you’re harbouring unforgiveness,  come quickly to the feet of Jesus and forgive your brother. Do this you will know the liberty of forgiving and being forgiven.

“If God hears the prayers of the righteous then, in Christ, God hears your prayers. And the prayer of a righteous person has great power!”

The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

Our God is holy and absolute in righteousness. There is none other like him in all of creation. God created mankind in his image, yet mankind rebelled against the image of God and came short of his glory. In other words, we no longer matched his righteousness. Because of original sin, you and I have missed the mark of God’s perfect righteous image. If scriptures tell us that he is far from the wicked and only hears the prayers of the righteous how do can we be sure God hears our prayers?

Jesus Christ was born like no other person ever on this planet. He was supernaturally conceived by the absolutely righteous Holy Spirit of God. Therefore, Jesus was not born into sin like you and me. He was, indeed, the natural son of man because his mother was human yet he was also the supernatural Son of God because his Father was the Holy Spirit. In Christ, righteous God became like one of us. Like Adam was created in the image of God, Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. Jesus Christ was – and is – absolutely righteous just as God is absolutely righteous. Now, it was God’s plan to ascribe our sin to his righteous Son. Therefore, by his grace and through our repentance of sin, placing our faith in him, we have his righteousness ascribed to us. Listen: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Receiving Christ as Lord is receiving God’s righteousness imputed into you. You stand righteous before the holy God not by your good works but by the good work of his Son.

In Christ, dear Christian, by God’s grace you are no longer wicked. In Christ, you are a new creation. In Christ, you are seated in a heavenly place. Through the death and resurrection of Christ, if you acknowledge him as Lord of your life, you have been redeemed from sin and reconciled to the righteousness of God. If God hears the prayers of the righteous then, in Christ, God hears your prayers. And the prayer of a righteous person has great power!

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken many, many lives. A dreadfully infectious virus with an approximate ratio of deaths to recovery of 21%. A dreadful global statistic. However, this means that almost 80% of people who contract COVID-19, survive. As shocking as this is, there yet exists another global pandemic that has endured thousands of years and is far worse than COVID-19. This pandemic has affected 100% of the world’s population with a 100% death rate. Sin.

The death caused by the infection of sin is not only physical. Death by sin is spiritual and eternal. Scripture tells us that the result of sin is death and all mankind has been infected by it. When God created the world, he created it good (no sin, no evil, no decay) but because of man’s disobedience, corruption spread to all of creation and has resulted in death. Because of sin we have all fallen from the life of God and will endure a perpetual agony after physical death.

But there’s good news! God loved the world so much that he gave his only son, Jesus Christ, and whoever believes in him would have perpetual life. God dealt with sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus. God showed his love for all the world infected with the deadly disease of sin, in this: while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. And there’s more good news. There is a vaccine against sin. It is the righteousness of God. God’s righteousness flowing through our spiritual veins inoculates us against the pandemic of sin.

God’s righteousness is available to all who would call on the name of Jesus. God allowed Jesus, who was not infected by sin, to contract the disease in our place so that, as he recovered from the illness by rising from the dead, we could receive the righteousness of God and be saved. The Blood of Christ was shed in the laboratory of Calvary to disinfect us against sin. If we believe in Christ’s death and resurrection and confess him as Lord we are inoculated against the effects of sin by God’s righteousness. Sin resulted in death but God’s gift is eternal life through Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth and the life.

Have you been inoculated against sin? Have you admitted your sin and asked God’s forgiveness? Have you received Christ as Lord, believing he died and rose again, for you? Have you been disinfected (washed) by the Blood of Christ? Do it now! (Pray the prayer below.)

GOD-TRACKING IS BEING TRANSFORMED BY THE CROSS

“Today – don’t delay – acknowledge that God took your sins upon the cross when he stepped down in Jesus Christ so that, by faith, you may step up through the cross and be transformed into his image from one degree of glory to another.”

2 Corinthians 3:18

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

When I was a teenager I used to love messing about with electronics. I remember building a shocking machine, for fun, out of a 1.5-volt battery and a transformer. Somehow, I managed to cause the transformer to increase the 1.5-volt DC flow to a much higher voltage which I would use to zap my friends. You see, I had succeeded in turning a step-down transformer into a step-up transformer. In so doing, I learnt that there are two types of transformers. The step-down transformer is used to transform high voltage to a low voltage while a step-up transformer is used to transform a low voltage to a high voltage.

As the Son of God, Jesus Christ is God incarnate. That is, he is the human form of the Almighty God. God’s Word became flesh in Jesus. God did this because man had fallen away from the magnificent creature that God had originally created him to be. All of us were transformed away from God’s glorious nature through sin. So, God, in his love and grace, stepped down from his glory, through Jesus, to transform us all and reconcile us again to his nature. Through the step-down transformer of the cross, God removed our sins. And that’s grace. However, good as that was, unless we respond to God’s grace and step-up to his throne, through the transformer of the cross, we will remain unchanged and lost in sin. And we step-up to the throne of grace of God in confidence by faith. We are transformed by grace through faith. 

You may have been reading GodTracker for a long time but have never consciously acknowledged Jesus as your Lord and saviour. Or you may desire to not be conformed to this world but transformed by the renewal of your mind yet have never verbally confessed Jesus as Lord of your life. Today – don’t delay – acknowledge that God took your sins upon the cross when he stepped down in Jesus Christ so that, by faith, you may step up through the cross and be transformed into his image from one degree of glory to another.

Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”

“My life was in tatters,” said the woman in the video I was watching. “My husband had left me, and my little girl was in foster care. Drugs and alcohol had wrecked my life and my body.” Helen had grown up in a Christian home and had acknowledged Jesus as Lord in her early teens, but the lure of the world had proved too strong for her. Now destitute and homeless, Helen sat poised to end it all. In final desperation she cried, “God, I give up! Take me!”

Helen’s story is like that of so many who have lost their way after finding the path to faith, hope and love. She’d allowed the flesh to creep in, succumbing to the trap of temptation. Gradually and steadily the devil and his delusions had destroyed a life that had been consecrated to Christ. Helen had lost her way. However, God’s pure Word had found root in her heart and, as always, God was watching over his Word to perform it. The only thing that can obstruct the effect of God’s Word is the self-will of ego. And Helen had allowed her ego to entice her into the mire in which she now sat in.

Instantly a strange and unexplained peace showered Helen’s heart. In her desperation she’d completely surrendered her will to God. Memories of youth began to surface and, over time, God restored her soul. It was a long haul, drudging through circumstances and consequences of bad life choices, but with her eyes on her Saviour, Helen came through.

Scripture says, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” Scripture says, “Acknowledge God in all your ways and he will direct your path.” Scripture says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will grant you the desires of your heart.” God’s name is a strong tower. Run back into it today be safe. Whatever your plight climb out of your mire and into the shower of his peace, by calling on the name of your Lord.

GOD-TRACKING IS BEGUN BY CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD

As a pastor, I am often asked to conduct funeral services. All funerals are sad, as we remember the passing of friends and loved ones. To me, the saddest funerals are those I conduct where the deceased has not acknowledged Christ as Lord. However, my loving counsel to believing loved ones is, only hope! No one knows the last thoughts of a soul on their death bed. The old saying goes, “My life flashed before my eyes.” If this is true then it could be that, at the very last split second before death, the dear soul may have called on the name of the Lord. And all who call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.


At every funeral I conduct I like to talk about life. It may seem an odd thing to do at a funeral, but Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,” The reality of life on earth is, we are all going to die. That is, there is coming a moment when the chemistry of your and my body will cease to react and our hearts will cease beating. But this body I have is only a jar of clay that contains my soul. My soul and my spirit, once created by God, are immortal. That is, the real me will always exist, even after my body has ceased to function. The question is, where will the real me spend eternity? Because of sin, my soul has come short of God’s glory and, unless reconciled to God, will suffer the eternal death we call hell. However, the truth is, God has made a way for me to know his forgiveness of sin and to be reconciled to his life, through Christ. Indeed, God loved the world so much that he sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, that whoever believes in him shall not suffer eternal death, but shall enjoy eternal life. Death has lost its sting!
And so it is, at every funeral I conduct I talk about life. This life is free and available to all who call on the name of the Lord, before it’s too late.

Dear God-tracker

GOD-TRACKING IS LIVING BY FAITH UNDER THE BENEFITS OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS IN YOU

Romans 1:17
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

Jesus is the blueprint of God for your life. The Bible says that we have all sinned and corrupted his perfect righteous image in which we were created. Even though God gave us the Law of Moses, it was rendered powerless in that it was weakened by the sinful nature. So, God sent his own Son, Jesus to reconcile us to himself. Because Jesus is God – God incarnate – he is and was sinless. Even so, God’s plan was to allow righteous Jesus to take the curse of sin when he died for us. You see, God imputed Jesus with your sin so that, by repentance and faith, you could be imputed with his righteousness. In Christ, you become the righteousness of God. Jesus in you is God’s original plan for your life.

Many people think they need to work hard to earn God’s favour, but this is impossible. God is so holy and righteous that we would need to become as he is in order to earn his favour. However, Jesus is already how God is, because Jesus is God in the flesh. Therefore, to become righteous, you and I need to intentionally repent of sin and then live by faith in God’s grace. The moment you truly repent of sin and admit your failings, you die to the old nature of sin. Then the moment you exercise faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus you put confidence in Christ and begin to live by his righteousness.

If you are in Christ you are a new creation, the old sinful life is gone and you have a new righteous life, in Christ. You were crucified with him when you confessed your sins and surrendered your life to God. It’s no longer the old you living in your body; it’s Christ living in you; and he is the righteousness of God! You see, the righteousness you now have in you is not your righteousness but it’s God’s righteousness in you.

Therefore, you can claim the benefits of the righteous. The Palms are packed with promises to the righteous:

“For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favour as with a shield,” (Psalm 5:11)

“The eyes of the Lord are towards the righteous and his ears towards their cry,” (Psalm 34:15)

“When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles,” (Psalm 34:17)

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all,” (Psalm 34:19)

“I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread,” (Psalm 37:25)

These are to mention but a few. However, we remind ourselves that we can only stand righteous before God, through Christ. That is, Jesus Christ is truly righteous and only by faith in his atoning death are we made righteous. Indeed, the righteous will live by faith!

Dear God-tracker

GOD-TRACKING STARTS WITH PUTTING YOUR FAITH IN THE WORK OF JESUS AS YOUR SCAPEGOAT

Psalm 103:12
…as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

Young Abner watched intently as the high priest pressed his hands on the goat’s head. A man stood by, ready to lead it out into the wilderness. It was the Day of Atonement. The Israelites were camped in the desert near the erected the tabernacle.

“Why does he do that, Abba,” Abner asked his father. “Well, replied his dad, God instructed Moses to make this day holy. It’s called Yom Kippur. On this day the high priest makes sacrifices for the sins of Israel.” Abner watched as the man led the goat away into the desert. His father continued, “When the high priest laid his hands on that goat he was symbolically pressing all our sins on him. Then that man over there, leads the goat off to a faraway place in the desert. There he’ll let him go.” By now the man and the goat had disappeared over a far-off sand dune. “That goat has carried all our sin far away from us.  This shows how, by the blood sacrifice, God has removed our sins from us as far as east is from west.” Abner gazed at the dune for some time before turning back to watch the sacrifices taking place at the altar.

The English expression, scapegoat comes from this biblical account as found in Leviticus 16. An innocent goat was used to carry the sins of the Jews into the wilderness. There it was condemned to wonder aimlessly, separated from man and beast. In the book of Isaiah, we read of how Jesus, the righteous innocent Son of God, had the iniquity of us all laid on him. Jesus became our scapegoat, bearing our sins alone in that desert wilderness of crucifixion. He sacrificed his life for our atonement. The true Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) was the day Jesus died. He both bore our sins and paid for our redemption!

Though totally innocent, Jesus had your sins pressed upon him at Calvary. We often forget that Jesus was dead for three days. I believe these three days were like the desert wilderness that the goat was led into, by the High Priest’s assistant in Leviticus. When Jesus carried your sins to the grave he was completely separated from the glory of God. He became your scapegoat. But, thank God, by the power of the Holy Spirit and his own righteousness, Jesus Christ did not remain in the grave; he rose from the dead! Our Scapegoat bore our sins to the wilderness of the grave and returned to bring you and me new life, in him.

“Dear heavenly God I realise that I have been carrying my sin with me all my life. I have missed the mark of your holy goodness. I confess and repent of all I have said, done or thought that has been sinful. Forgive me, too for the sin in me that I am yet capable of committing. Thank you that my sin was pressed upon Jesus at Calvary. Thank you that he bore my sin into the wilderness of the grave so that, by your grace, I may have my sins removed from me as far as the east is from the west. I now ask Christ to come into me as I give my life over to him. Thank you dear Jesus, that you rose from the grave so that I can have new life in you. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS ACCEPTING YOUR 2,000 YEAR OLD FORGIVENESS, TODAY

 

Acts 2:38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

 

Pastor Frank’s eyes were closed as he sang along to the worship song. The time was a little after 6.15 pm. Frank was content as he worshiped. Suddenly the rear doors of the church burst open! What happened next would change and Frank’s understanding of forgiveness forever. Repetitive cracking noises; several intermittent thundering bangs then stunned silence. Some people groaned then one woman screamed, then another. More cracks and soon pandemonium erupted as people rushed for the doors. More cracking noises… and blood. Frank froze in terror. He realised his church was under attack. Four terrorists had burst in on their Sunday evening worship service wielding R4 automatic assault rifles and hand grenades.

The St James Church massacre on 25th July 1993 in Cape Town, South Africa took 11 lives and wounded 58 more. Like all terrorism, this was an atrocious act of cowardice. However, what the devil planned for evil, God turned for good. Immediately after the attack, Frank Retief was heard saying on camera that he forgave the attackers. Many years later, after the end of Apartheid in South Africa, these perpetrators appealed to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for amnesty. As was the crux of the Commission, Frank Retief was called upon to offer pardon to his attackers, which he willingly did with clear conscience before his God. Later Frank was quoted as saying, “Forgiveness can be offered immediately after an offence but forgiveness is never received until it is actually asked for by the offender.”

While hanging in shear agony on a cruel wooden cross, Jesus Christ cried out, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Almost 2,000 years ago Jesus spoke those words not only to the people who had crucified him but to the entire world. If, indeed, God loved the whole world so much that he sent his Son to save those who would believe in him then what Jesus did and said on the cross was universally applied. Jesus died for your sins so that you could be included in those words, “Father, forgive them.”

Frank Retief discovered he was able to honestly offer forgiveness to his attackers immediately after their attack, but that forgiveness was not theirs until repentance was sought by his attackers. Just so, God has already forgiven all your acts of sin, long before you ever repented. However, that forgiveness was never yours until you actually asked for it. Just as Frank was able to offer instant forgiveness only by God’s grace, your forgiveness became available the instant Jesus died for your sins, only by God’s grace. There is nothing you can do to make right with God for the wrong you’ve done, except to repent and accept his forgiveness. It does not matter how dreadful your sins may have been, Jesus has already paid the price for that sin on the cross almost 2,000 years ago. Don’t delay one minute longer. Reach out and accept his forgives, now. Listen: For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Only by his grace is God offering you this free gift of life, made possible by Jesus’ atonement for your sins the day he died. So why not repent now and receive the forgiveness he offers, today?

Thank you for forgiving me 2,000 years ago. Today I accept your forgiveness, by your grace.

 “Dear Heavenly God, thank you so much that you sent Jesus to take the weight of my sin upon himself. Thank you that Jesus died for my all sin and rose again to set me free from sin, Satan and death. Thank you that when Jesus cried out ‘Father forgive them,’ he was asking you to forgive the sins of the whole world, including mine. Dear God, I admit to my wrong; I repent of my sins, in Jesus’ name. I am sorry for all that I have thought or done that has grieved you in in way. I confess and repent of the sin into which I have been born and seek your forgiveness. I surrender my life to you and ask you to come dwell inside of me, by your Spirit. Thank you for forgiving me 2,000 years ago. Today I accept your forgiveness, by your grace. Help me to keep my eyes on you and walk in righteousness. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS LIVING WITH AN ATTITUDE OF UNQUALIFIED FORGIVENESS

Jan felt the pain rising up in her chest. Rod was sitting across the table from her with his head in his hands and his fingers moist with tears. He had just confessed to being unfaithful to his wife. “I… I am very, very sorry. I was wrong. I sinned. Please forgive me,” said Rod.

Rod and Jan had been married for 12 years. Neither of them had so much as toyed with the idea of an extramarital relationship. Sadly, an old friend had come back into their lives; a woman Rod had known before his marriage. Rod had dropped his guard and the devil took advantage of his weakness. Now he sat before his wife in unconditional apology and repentance. Jan knew well it would take a long time to heal this dilemma but she had one of two choices: to become bitter and retaliate or to unconditionally forgive.

Jesus hung on a savage cross. Blood from the spikes in his wrists dripped from his skin to the dirt below. His eyes were swollen shut and his jaw throbbed with pain from the beatings. Torn and wounded, the Son of God groaned. His lips moved. Those closest to him heard his stilted tones, “Father, forgive them.” How could this man forgive those that had just condemned and crucified him unjustly? Yet, even before repentance was on his accusers’ lips, Christ forgave.

Forgiveness is unqualified. God chose to forgive you of your sins even before you were born. The crucifixion of Christ almost 2000 years ago made forgiveness available to you today. By his grace, when you finally realised your folly and confessed your sin, in repentance, his forgiving became your forgiveness. Forgiveness predates apology. Forgiveness is a mind-set we choose to adopt, because God has forgiven us. Jesus taught us to pray, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.”
Forgiveness heals the offended. Whatever offence you have endured, you have only two options before you: become bitter and retaliate or to forgive unconditionally.

 “Dear Lord, I realise now that I have been harbouring unforgiveness in my heart. I am sorry, Lord. I realise that unforgiveness will only destroy me. So I confess unforgiveness as a sin and repent of it. I now choose to confess forgiveness of this person who has offended, even if they choose not to apologise. Help me to offer un-qualified forgiveness; to forgive without saying, ‘I forgive you but…’ And now I pray that this forgiveness on my lips will sink down into my heart. Help me to take your example of forgiveness to forgive. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.”
