Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.

Covid-19 has probably been the most universally transmitted viral infection the world has eve
r known. As the original strain has modified with every mutation, it has become increasingly contagious. We pray for those who have suffered the ills of this pandemic. We pray for healing, sustenance and restoration.

As drastic as this pandemic has been it has got me thinking about the gospel. The Scripture tells us that the word of God propagates faith. That is, faith becomes contagious if God’s word is spread. Faith is a very contagious commodity that, once contracted, will change a person’s life for the good, for good. The message of Christ is the Good News that Jesus took the consequences of sin upon himself when he died in our place on the cross. The grace of God is shown by Jesus’ death and resurrection and we are saved by grace through faith. Faith is contagious but, unlike Covid-19, contacting faith results in life not death! And this message is spread through the lips of those who have already been infected with faith.

Jesus commissioned us to be his witnesses throughout the world. If you know Christ as Lord then you have already moved from condemnation to mercy, from legal bondage to grace and from a death sentence to abundant life. If you know Christ as Lord then you are contaminated with faith, a faith that comes by the Good News. If you know Christ as Lord then you have a responsibility to spread this Good News to those around you so that they too may have the chance to be infected with faith. Faith is contagious but we need to open our mouths before it will spread.

It was once said, “Sometimes the Lord calms the storm. Sometimes he lets the storm rage and calms his child.” A story is told of an artist’s competition where the painters were asked to paint the most serene picture of a peaceful scene they could imagine. They all set to work. A few weeks later, at a great banquet, the finalists were revealed. One after the other magnificent scenes of quiet and tranquillity were unveiled until, finally, the effort of the grand prize winner was presented on a podium, still covered by a curtain.

“This is the most intense scene of peace I have ever witnessed,” said the chief judge as he addressed the audience. “It reveals a heart devoid of pain, contaminants, and fear. It shows one that he can be content in every circumstance; a heart filled with authority, love and self-control. This, ladies and gentlemen, is our winner.” The judge uncovered the canvas.

The audience gasped. There before them, beneath a powerful spotlight, was exposed an exquisite painting of a most violent waterfall crashing over the edge of a high cliff to the rocks below. Above were ferocious dark rolling cumulonimbus clouds, spewing fierce flashes of lightning. Spray was rising from the torrent, blown by brutal gales as water crashed over the edge of the falls. Not a sign of life anywhere except on a narrow ledge of rock in the cliff face beside the cascading waterfall. There, beneath a mother’s warm wings nestled three small chicks in a roost clinging to the rock. They were safe, warm… and at peace.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings, you will find refuge. No matter what you face today – economic collapse, unprecedented pandemic, violent disaster, incurable illness or simply a forlorn spirit, know this, your God will never, never abandon you. He is your provider, your safety, your guide, your healer and your peace. Come to Jesus and he will give you rest. Underneath now, are his everlasting arms. The Lord is your refuge and your fortress, your God, in whom you can trust.

I’ve often heard it asked, why doesn’t God prevent devastations like the Covid-19 pandemic or

earthquakes or even wars? Why doesn’t he intervene in the ways of man? Well, the truth is, he does, or more specifically, he has intervened. God has given his Church the authority and great privilege of prayer.

Prayer is a mystery to me. I will never know how my simple seemingly insignificant words in private can move the hand of the Creator, yet they can. James writes (as seen in the Amplified Bible) that the payers of a righteous person are dynamic and can have tremendous power. “Ah, but I’m not righteous,” I hear you say. Indeed you in yourself and I in myself are not righteous. In fact, Isaiah says our attempts at righteousness are like filthy rags in God’s sight. True. However, listen to what the Bible says God did through the work of Jesus at Calvary: God made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Get that? It is not your righteousness that qualifies your prayers, it is God’s own righteousness in you, through Christ, that causes your prayers to become dynamic and have tremendous power to accomplish much!

So, I say, as you abide in Jesus and have his words abide in you, ask the Father for anything in Christ’s name and he will do it for you. In Christ, you are the righteous man whose prayers accomplish much. Your humble words and heartfelt persistent prayers can move the hand of Creator. Therefore, get praying! With this authority and privilege, you can stand against devastations like the Covid-19 pandemic or earthquakes or even wars. Come on, child God, let’s pray without ceasing.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favour and honour. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

Some thoughts about prayer: “The spectacle of a nation praying is more awe-inspiring than the explosion of an atomic bomb… because prayer is man's greatest means of trapping the infinite resources of God,” (J Edgar Hoover, first-ever director of the FBI); “God shapes the world by prayer. Prayers are deathless. They outlive the lives of those who uttered them,” (E. M. Bounds). And the words of a good friend of mine, Evangelist George Miller, “What God can do, prayer can do!”

The whole world is living through one of the greatest universal crises in recorded history. The effects of the coronavirus lockdown and the fear of contracting this deadly disease have shaken so many people. Some have become consumed with confusing conspiracies propagated by Social Media. Others have lost their livelihoods while still more have lost their very lives. This pandemic has invoked lies, death and destruction. It has robbed people of joy, peace and their incomes. Let’s remember, Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” He also said that the devil is the father of lies.

The enemy of God’s plan for your life is Satan. His plan for you is to derail you from God’s plan for you. Satan is the thief that Jesus referred to; he is the killer and the destroyer. If you are suffering the effects of this coronavirus, I encourage you to pray and seek first God’s domain and his goodness. Your Lord is faithful and he will meet your needs and heal your flesh. By God’s grace, you are made right before him and no good thing will he withhold from those who live under his grace. Again, I encourage you to pray. Prayer is the key to seeking his face. We seek God’s purposes in prayer. We seek God’s healing in prayer and we seek God’s sustenance in prayer. And he will sustain us! Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus who endured his crisis to see himself seated at God’s right hand.

“In Christ, you have been given authority to bind on earth any evil attack on your life, be it a financial crisis, poor health, conflict or Covid-19. It is not God’s will for you to suffer indiscriminate harm.”

2 Samuel 22:3
…my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my saviour; you save me from violence.

Jesus and his disciples had just arrived at the district of Cæsarea Philippi. Near the town was a rocky outcrop leading to a cliff that hosted the pagan temple of Pan. To the left of the temple buildings is a large shallow cave where a tumultuous spring bubbles up as one of the sources of the Jordan river. The flowing water creates violent eddies and whirlpools as it is sucked back into the earth to burst out below into the river. The worshipers of Pan would sacrifice their children to their god by throwing them into the turbulent waters in the cave. If they were fortunate to be sucked under and ejected alive below then they believed Pan was pleased with them. However, inevitably, the child would drown before he was emitted by the torrent below. This cave and whirlpools became known as the gates of hell.

Perhaps Jesus was watching as pagan priests performed their vile rituals on this rock when he turns to his friends. “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” he asks. His disciples chat among themselves for a second then replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But who do you say I am,” asks Jesus. Peter replies, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

“Blessed are you, Simon. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock,” he says pointing at Simon Peter, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Then Jesus adds, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

In the face of despicable human sacrifice at the temple of this false god, known as the gates of hell, Jesus affirms his deity as the Son of the living God. Peter, who represents all who follow Christ, is given power and authority over all and victory over the very the gates of hell. At the base of the rock of the temple Pan, Jesus affirms that his Church is a rock greater than the rock of Satan because it is built on God, the rock of salvation. And, represented by Peter, all his followers have divine authority to bind evil and release good.

In Christ, you have been given authority to bind on earth any evil attack on your life, be it a financial crisis, poor health, conflict or Covid-19. It is not God’s will for you to suffer indiscriminate harm. Jesus taught us to pray, “Deliver us from evil.” So, stand boldly against the attack of Satan and bind all evil that comes against you, in the name of Jesus. And in Christ, you have been given authority to release good and blessing on earth. So, by the Word of God, speak out release to whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, excellent and worthy of praise in your life.

Lord, deliver us from evil! I bind financial crisis; I bind illness and I bind conflict. In Jesus’ name, I bind all the attempts of Satan to derail me from your holy plans for my life. Likewise, in Jesus’ name, I release all that is good, upright, wholesome and pure. Lastly, I stand with all who pray with me now and bind the evil of the Covid-19 pandemic. I bind its pain and disease! I bind the death it causes! I bind its chaos on the economy! And I release healing, wellness, provision and restoration. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray. The COVID-19 pandemic has taken many, many lives. A dreadfully infectious virus with an approximate ratio of deaths to recovery of 21%. A dreadful global statistic. However, this means that almost 80% of people who contract COVID-19, survive. As shocking as this is, there yet exists another global pandemic that has endured thousands of years and is far worse than COVID-19. This pandemic has affected 100% of the world’s population with a 100% death rate. Sin.

The death caused by the infection of sin is not only physical. Death by sin is spiritual and eternal. Scripture tells us that the result of sin is death and all mankind has been infected by it. When God created the world, he created it good (no sin, no evil, no decay) but because of man’s disobedience, corruption spread to all of creation and has resulted in death. Because of sin we have all fallen from the life of God and will endure a perpetual agony after physical death.

But there’s good news! God loved the world so much that he gave his only son, Jesus Christ, and whoever believes in him would have perpetual life. God dealt with sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus. God showed his love for all the world infected with the deadly disease of sin, in this: while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. And there’s more good news. There is a vaccine against sin. It is the righteousness of God. God’s righteousness flowing through our spiritual veins inoculates us against the pandemic of sin.

God’s righteousness is available to all who would call on the name of Jesus. God allowed Jesus, who was not infected by sin, to contract the disease in our place so that, as he recovered from the illness by rising from the dead, we could receive the righteousness of God and be saved. The Blood of Christ was shed in the laboratory of Calvary to disinfect us against sin. If we believe in Christ’s death and resurrection and confess him as Lord we are inoculated against the effects of sin by God’s righteousness. Sin resulted in death but God’s gift is eternal life through Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth and the life.

Have you been inoculated against sin? Have you admitted your sin and asked God’s forgiveness? Have you received Christ as Lord, believing he died and rose again, for you? Have you been disinfected (washed) by the Blood of Christ? Do it now! (Pray the prayer below.)

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them

The coronavirus pandemic has greatly impacted our societies. Not only are people becoming gravely ill and even dying from COVID-19 but the lockdowns employed in many nations have severely impacted national economies and individual livelihoods. My wife, Karen and I contracted the virus a few weeks ago and were seriously ill. At the time, between coughing spells and bouts of fever, I happened to look out the kitchen window and noticed a blackbird hopping across the grass. “It’s alright for you, I said out loud, “you’ve got nothing to worry about.”

In an instant, without so much as formulating a thought in my mind, I heard the words of Jesus: “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.”

Our God is omniscient (all-knowing), omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (all-encompassing) and eternal. Therefore, he knows our plight before we ever get wind of hardship. He is powerful enough to, not only control the affairs of the world but to ordain his will on mankind. God Almighty is present everywhere across the universe – he is present with every individual across the globe and knows every detail of their lives. And God is eternal, that is, he exists simultaneously in the past, present and the future.

Your God knows all about you – your worries, your health concerns and your needs. He has the wherewithal to meet all your needs (and heal your body) and he is already present in the future preparing your life’s track. So, keep your eyes on Jesus and acknowledge God in all your ways. Trust him to heal and provide under this global crisis, and others to come. Indeed, look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Therefore, live for today because Jesus is already in your tomorrow.

Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you are always in control

“O Lord, I confess that I am afraid. I am afraid of this pandemic; I’m afraid of its deadly potential on my health and its negative effect on the economy. But I do know that you are the Lord Almighty and you are always in control of the affairs of man. So, I put my trust in you and, like the birds of the air, I will live in confidence that you will provide my needs today and tomorrow. I fix my eyes on you and will continue to acknowledge you in all my ways. Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you are always in control. Amen.”
