True Suffering

“May we take up our crosses and suffer for the sake of righteousness but, in the name of Jesus the Healer, refuse the suffering of sickness and physical harm. For by his wounds, we have been healed!”

Romans 8:17
…and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Suffering! Suffering is a theological concept that has been taught through the ages of Christianity. But suffering takes on two guises: natural suffering of sickness or physical harm or human suffering of persecution. Scripture tells us that if we suffer with Christ, we may also be glorified with Christ. So, what type of suffering did Jesus endure?

Jesus is God incarnate. One of God’s names is Jehovah Rapha. Directly translated this name means the LORD our Healer. So, as the Son of God, Jesus is Jehovah Rafa and Jesus healed many people of natural suffering while he walked on earth. In fact, more than 2 thirds of all the miracles that Jesus performed were miracles of healing. Therefore, I think it’s safe to say since Jesus removed natural suffering from people, natural suffering is not the type of suffering implied that we need to endure in order to be glorified in Christ.

Jesus did say, however, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” The cross was a symbol of intense suffering at the hands of man. By this statement, Jesus was implying that if we desire to be his followers, we need to be ready to suffer. Indeed. However, the suffering of crucifixion (the cross) was not natural suffering, such as with sickness or disease, it was suffering imposed by the hand of man. That is, crucifixion and the suffering that Jesus endured was persecution. Jesus was persecuted by the religious people of his day to the point of death. Jesus did not resist or retaliate against this type of suffering. Jesus welcomed it because he knew that, after he had suffered for a little while, he would be glorified to the right hand of God in majesty. Therefore, willingly suffering persecution is taking up your cross to the glory of  God. But willingly suffering natural pain, disease or physical harm violates the ethics of the nature and ministry of Christ.

So, may we take up our crosses and suffer for the sake of righteousness but, in the name of Jesus the Healer, refuse the suffering of sickness and physical harm. For by his wounds, we have been healed!

“I make a choice today to pick up my cross when people persecute me for your sake and suffer with Christ that I may be glorified in him.”

“Dear God I have been suffering this illness for too long. I realise now that natural suffering does not glorify you. Therefore, I reject this suffering and claim the physical healing promised by your word. However, dear Lord, I am willing to suffer for the sake of righteousness. I make a choice today to pick up my cross when people persecute me for your sake and suffer with Christ so that I may be glorified in him. Amen.”

“In Christ, you have been given authority to bind on earth any evil attack on your life, be it a financial crisis, poor health, conflict or Covid-19. It is not God’s will for you to suffer indiscriminate harm.”

2 Samuel 22:3
…my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my saviour; you save me from violence.

Jesus and his disciples had just arrived at the district of Cæsarea Philippi. Near the town was a rocky outcrop leading to a cliff that hosted the pagan temple of Pan. To the left of the temple buildings is a large shallow cave where a tumultuous spring bubbles up as one of the sources of the Jordan river. The flowing water creates violent eddies and whirlpools as it is sucked back into the earth to burst out below into the river. The worshipers of Pan would sacrifice their children to their god by throwing them into the turbulent waters in the cave. If they were fortunate to be sucked under and ejected alive below then they believed Pan was pleased with them. However, inevitably, the child would drown before he was emitted by the torrent below. This cave and whirlpools became known as the gates of hell.

Perhaps Jesus was watching as pagan priests performed their vile rituals on this rock when he turns to his friends. “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” he asks. His disciples chat among themselves for a second then replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But who do you say I am,” asks Jesus. Peter replies, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

“Blessed are you, Simon. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock,” he says pointing at Simon Peter, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Then Jesus adds, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

In the face of despicable human sacrifice at the temple of this false god, known as the gates of hell, Jesus affirms his deity as the Son of the living God. Peter, who represents all who follow Christ, is given power and authority over all and victory over the very the gates of hell. At the base of the rock of the temple Pan, Jesus affirms that his Church is a rock greater than the rock of Satan because it is built on God, the rock of salvation. And, represented by Peter, all his followers have divine authority to bind evil and release good.

In Christ, you have been given authority to bind on earth any evil attack on your life, be it a financial crisis, poor health, conflict or Covid-19. It is not God’s will for you to suffer indiscriminate harm. Jesus taught us to pray, “Deliver us from evil.” So, stand boldly against the attack of Satan and bind all evil that comes against you, in the name of Jesus. And in Christ, you have been given authority to release good and blessing on earth. So, by the Word of God, speak out release to whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, excellent and worthy of praise in your life.

SO, DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

And I release healing, wellness, provision and restoration. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray

“Dear Lord God, you are the rock of my salvation. Today I stand, secure on you my rock and claim the authority to bind and loose, as found in your Word. Therefore, I bind all evil at work in my life. Lord, deliver us from evil! I bind financial crisis; I bind illness and I bind conflict. In Jesus’ name, I bind all the attempts of Satan to derail me from your holy plans for my life. Likewise, in Jesus’ name, I release all that is good, upright, wholesome and pure. Lastly, I stand with all who pray with me now and bind the evil of the Covid-19 pandemic. I bind its pain and disease! I bind the death it causes! I bind its chaos on the economy! And I release healing, wellness, provision and restoration. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.”
