Dear God Tracker

Pray With Your Eyes on Jesus and Not Your Problem

My blood ran cold as my wife relayed the message to me that she’d just received from my daughter-in-law. Our newborn grandson had been rushed to hospital with a temperature in excess of 39 degrees Celsius. Little Ruben had taken our lives by storm; I wasn’t going to sit back and allow the devil to take his life from him. Karen and I rushed to the hospital and, together with my son and his wife, we laid hands on his little body. At that moment I just knew he would be alright. However, the next day when we arrived to visit him, we found his parents outside the ward, in tears. Little Ruben had deteriorated and stopped breathing. Medics resuscitated him and sent him to intensive care. Yet, with hundreds of people praying for him around the world, I just knew he would be alright.

After only 24 hours in ICU he was discharged back to his ward. Several tests were done but the doctors found nothing wrong with baby Ruben! A few of days later he was home. By God’s grace and comfort, the family had pressed in and taken God at his word: “…they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well,” (Matt 16:18).

Oswald Chambers once said, “We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties.” Could be you’re facing a crisis right now, as my family did last week. Let me encourage you to pray and hear from God. God’s word is jam-packed with promise and hope. Receive his word and walk in the hope it offers. You see, the Lord is already on the other side of your difficulty making way for you to get there. No matter what the devil throws at you; no matter how circumstances may bend in the process, know that your God is faithful and he is quick to deliver you. So pray with your eyes on Jesus and not your problem.

God-tracking is getting through to the other side.

Wake up! Strengthen What Remains

With bloodied sweat on his brow, Jesus made his way the few paces back to his friends who he’d ask to join him in prayer in the olive grove. He’d been travailing before the Father for an hour. It was well past midnight and he knew that he would soon be arrested, tried, convicted and crucified for crimes he’d never committed. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

Peter and his two friends had sat down a stone’s throw away from Jesus and watched him pray. They knew that something auspicious was about to take place but fatigue had overtaken them. Sadly they could not keep their eyes open at this late hour, leaving Jesus to face the cup of God, alone.

Many years later, the risen and ascended Jesus appeared to one of these three in a vision on the Isle of Patmos. Before he revealed to John what would come at the end of all time, Jesus gave John instructions to the churches of Asia Minor. To the church in Sardis he said, “Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God.”

As we track God’s purposes we often become blasé about his commands and instructions. We become so familiar with prayer, worship and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit that we fall asleep in our complacency. The danger of this is that we miss the blessings of God and open ourselves to the arrest of the enemy. Let’s open ourselves rather to God’s word. And God’s word to us today is to “Wake up! Strengthen what remains.”

Fixed on God’s Track like a Gyroscope Spinning in Space and Time

Like most kids, I had a bicycle when I was younger. I loved my bike and would often take the wheels off when I was cleaning it. I discovered that if I held a wheel by the axle nuts between my hands and gave it a good spin it would become rigid in its position and be very difficult to swing left or right. Effectively, my bike’s wheel between my fingers was acting like a gyroscope.

A gyroscope is a spinning wheel or disk whose axle is free to take any orientation. When a gyroscope is fixed in a pivoted support that allows its rotation about a single axel (like my bike’s wheel between my fingers) its direction remains nearly fixed, regardless of any motion of the support on which it is mounted. In other words, a spinning gyroscope will remain perfectly fixed in its direction of spin irrespective of an external force. This makes it very useful in aircraft instruments.

God’s word is the gyroscope of your life. It spins around the fixed axis of God’s plans and purposes for you, rigid in his way. When you acknowledge the Lord in all your ways you allow his word to direct you like the gyroscopic compass of the space shuttle. By fixing your eyes on Jesus and remaining in his word you too will become fixed on God’s track like a gyroscope spinning in space and time.

God-tracking is remaining rigid in his word.
