“Your soul is like a gearbox between the engine of your spirit and the wheels of your flesh. If your soul is grinding, the wheels won’t turn.”

Psalm 103:1
Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

Your soul is your middleman. Your inner man is your spirit which is renewed by the Holy Spirit when you are born again. Your outer man is your body. Your body houses your soul and your spirit and, when you are born again, it becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit. Your soul contains your mind, that is, your intellect your creativity, your will and your emotions.

I was standing in the pre-service prayer meeting at church one Sunday morning. I had woken up in a miserable mood. I’d been slogging away at a repetitive daily routine the whole week and was feeling rundown and runout. All I wanted to do was run off to a beach somewhere peaceful with no responsibilities or schedules. Ever felt that way? In my soul, my emotions were in turmoil and my mood was low. I knew God loved me and knew that I was still in a good spiritual space, and my body felt good and healthy, but it was my soul – my middleman – that was gloomy. It was then that someone read Psalm 103… “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”

The opening lines of Psalm 103 are not a suggestion or simply a good idea. No matter what mood you’re in, these words are an instruction from the word of God to praise God with your middleman. Your soul is like a gearbox between the engine of your spirit and the wheels of your flesh. If your soul is grinding, the wheels won’t turn. Therefore, the instruction is to praise God in your soul, the seat of your will and your emotions. It takes a conscious effort to do this but when you clothe yourself with a garment of praise the gearbox of your middleman will be lubricated with the oil of joy.

As the word of God fell on my ears that Sunday morning, I made a deliberate effort to speak out praise and blessing to the One who holds my life together: “You will bless the Lord O my soul. All that is within me will bless his holy name.” The clouds lifted and the Lord revived my soul. He satisfied my mouth with good things so that my youth was renewed like the eagle’s.

God-tracking is wilfully blessing God on a bad day.

“I choose to continue following your plan A and trust that you will direct my footsteps every step of the way, through thick and thin.”

“Bless the Lord O my soul! All that is in me – spirit, soul and flesh –  will bless the Lord. I praise you Lord because you have blessed my soul. In the face of difficulty, need and dismay, I choose to give you praise and glory because I know that you direct my paths. I put on the garment of praise for a spirit of heaviness. I receive the oil of joy for mourning. Thank you, O Lord, that you fill my mouth with good things so that my youth was renewed like the eagle’s. Hallelujah, my God reigns! Amen.”

“Hold on; never give up. Continue to acknowledge God in every aspect of your life and have faith that he will direct your path.”

Job 42:2 (NIV)
“I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”

The concept of God-tracking implies seeking and tracking the plans and purposes of God for your life. The scripture makes it plain that God knows the plans he has for you and that all things will work out according to God’s purpose. We can trust God’s plans. His plans are always Plan A. Though it may seem to you that God changes his mind, God has no plan B for your life. If you acknowledge the Lord in every aspect of your life, you can rest assured that he will direct your path according to the plans that he knows he has for you; plans for a future filled with hope for wholeness, peace and success. That said, I’m sure you’ll agree that there are times in life when it seems that God’s plan A appears to have been thwarted.

Years back, when I was studying for the ministry, I was involved in a small local church as the worship leader. It was a stable growing church led by a seemingly solid man. However, one day, the pastor came up with a new plan that required all the elders of the church to become fully qualified and ordained ministers. He promptly demolished the leadership of the church, leaving himself as the sole leader. However, my position as worship leader still entitled me to a humble leadership position within the church. Sadly, this pastor was dissatisfied with this fact and set about to falsely accuse me of attempting to rally support to take over the church. This could not have been further from the truth. As a Bible student, I viewed my pastor as my mentor and was in complete submission to his authority. Unfortunately, after several months of discord and dissension, because of false accusations, the church closed. Here I was, studying for the ministry and believing God had a plan for my life, yet I was now churchless and directionless. Was God’s plan A for me thwarted?

In his grace and foreknowledge, God led us to a new church led by a man of integrity. Submitting to his oversight, I continued studying for the ministry. God’s plan A resumed. I was promoted to music director of this new church, which was much larger and more established than my former church. However, the next three years proved to be the most gruelling years for Karen and me. Due to financial difficulty and my ignorant choices, my marriage almost failed. If it weren’t for the pastor of our new church, I firmly believe that  I would be divorced, out of the ministry and far from God today. God knew the plan he had for me. His Plan A was never thwarted.

Your Lord can do all things. He has a plan for your life and all things will work out for your good according to his exclusive purpose for your life. So, hold on; never give up. Continue to acknowledge God in every aspect of your life and walk by faith believing that he will direct your path according to his plan A.

God-tracking is never losing sight of God’s plan A.

“I choose to continue following your plan A and trust that you will direct my footsteps every step of the way, through thick and thin.”

“O Lord, I’m sorry for taking my eyes off you and looking down at my feet. I choose to not give up but look up and acknowledge you in every aspect of my life – my work, my ministry, my relationships, my finances and my choices for the future. I know you have a plan for my life. I know all things are possible for you and your plans are never thwarted. So, I choose to continue following your plan A and trust that you will direct my footsteps every step of the way, through thick and thin. Amen.

“Keep going. Never give up because you see no results. If you are following God’s call on your life then you can rest assured the results are mounting up.”

2 Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Thomas Edison, who invented the electric light bulb spent more than $100,000 to attain 6000 different specimens of fibre for his experiments. He failed a miserable 5997 times. Only three of the elements he tested proved suitable. But Edison refused to quit because he didn’t see the results of his effort. He persisted in his task because he knew the end result would qualify his efforts.

I was pondering my work the other day. In my early days in Christian radio broadcasting, I received many wonderful responses from listeners, which greatly encouraged me. Today I possibly reach far more people through my radio programming than ever before but receive very little response. Have I failed? I reason that, due to the excessive media output we’re all subject to in the information age, people, these days, do not generally respond to radio as much as they did 20 years ago. Nevertheless, I often feel like I’ve failed in my God-given task.

Then the Lord reminded me that with every word I speak under his anointing, I lay up for myself heavenly treasures. Jesus said, “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” Though I don’t see the results of my labour, the Lord is watching over his word that I speak and he will bring it to fruition in the lives of the hearers. Though I feel like I’ve failed because I don’t see the results of my work, I know that with every word I speak the end result will qualify my efforts.

Keep going. Never give up because you see no results. If you are following God’s call on your life then you can rest assured the results are mounting up. The Lord is watching over his call on your life. By his grace, the Lord is doing the work through you. Grace is God’s doing. In the end, when you are called up yonder, you will be astounded at the treasures you have laid up for yourself in heaven.

God-tracking is laying up treasures in heaven.

SO, DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

“I know that by fulfilling the task have given me, I am laying up treasures in heaven.”

“Dear God, forgive me for complaining about results. I realise now that the only results I need to be concerned about are following and doing your will. I acknowledge you in my work. I labour not by my efforts but by your grace, and your grace will produce the results of my labour. Forgive me for looking for results in the here and now. I know that by fulfilling the task you’ve me, I am laying up treasures in heaven. The end result will qualify my efforts. Hallelujah! Amen.”
