GOD-TRACKING IS GETTING OVER YOUR MOUNTAINS

Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

I awoke with a start. The phone at my bedside was howling. I glanced at the red numbers on my alarm clock: 02:50 “Hello,” I groggily said trying to surface from deep sleep. “Dudley. It’s Eugene.”

“Eugene! What’s up.”

“I’m afraid. I’ve done it again. I’ve done it again!” he groaned, “I keep doing this thing over and over. Can you please come round?”

My friend Eugene was a young man who lived alone and had problem with pornography. He knew Christ as Lord but had become addicted to watching indecent videos through peer pressure, and now he was hooked. His habit had become a mountain that he kept going round and round in a sin, repent, sin, repent cycle. Eugene needed to repent of sin and renew his mind.

Science tells us that the human brain is comprised of neurons. Neurons are specialised nerve cells that have finger like projections called, dendrites. Like all human tissue, dendrites are made of protein. Through metabolism, proteins can be built up and broken down. Science says that the dendrites of the neurons in our brains are in a constant state of flux. Therefore, it is possible to change the patterns, habits and responses of our brains. Indeed, you can change your mind!

I counselled Eugene to confess his sin to God again. I told him, if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us, always. Faithfulness is consistent. God will consistently forgive us if we faithfully confess and repent of our sin, with full intention to not do it again. And Eugene’s mind needed to change. So, I encouraged him to renew his mind by getting into God’s Word and getting God’s Word into him. Pornography was a mountain to Eugene. Instead of going round his mountain time and time again, I encouraged Eugene to seek God for professional help to overcome his addiction, and change his mind by prayerful repetitive confession of God’s Word.

Whatever your mountain is, let me encourage you to call on the Lord. He is faithful and just to help you get over your mountain, instead of repeatedly going around it. It is certainly possible to change your mind. Beware of self-pity. Repeatedly fill your mind with God’s positive Word. And remember, he is faithfully right there with you even in the thick of despair.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

I make a conscious choice to renew my thinking – to change my mind

“O Lord, I admit to my sin and repent, in the name of Jesus. Thank you that you executed justice for my sake upon Jesus at Calvary. Thank you that you are consistent in your forgiveness. I make a conscious choice to renew my thinking – to change my mind – by filling my thoughts with your Word. Lord, help me overcome my mountains and gain victory in every adverse circumstance. I commit my thought life to you and acknowledge that you are with, even in these gurgling situations. Greater is he who lives within me than he who lives in the world! Amen.”
