GOD-TRACKING IS FAITHFULLY TRACKING GOD’S PURPOSES BY THE SUFFICIENCY OF HIS GRACE

2 Corinthians 12:9(b)
Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

“Simon, Simon!” called Andrew as he ran up to his brother’s boat, moored at the edge of the lake. “We have found the Messiah!” John and I were listening to John the Baptist speak when suddenly he pointed to Jesus of Nazareth and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”

“Whatever,” replied Simon as he continued to fold his nets. “No, really. Come see.” Simon reluctantly followed his brother to where Jesus was standing talking to some men. Jesus looked right at Simon and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Peter,” (which means rock).

And so began the life’s adventure of Simon Peter, one of the most dynamic God-trackers of all Bible characters. But Peter was, what we might call, a rough diamond. His outspokenness would land him in most unsavoury situations, more often than not. It was Peter who drew his sword and cut off the High Priest servant’s ear at the arrest of Jesus and it was Peter who denied his Lord three times after Jesus’ arrest. But it was also Peter who acknowledged Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God. He was the rock upon whom Jesus built the Church. Simon Peter became the primary leader of the 12 founding apostles of Christianity and he was used of the Holy Spirit to pen several books we now have as scripture in our Bible. Simon Peter was a great man.

Thankfully the Bible is packed with characters like Peter. Men and women who were less than perfect but who were used mightily of God. I take courage as I seek to track God’s will for my own life from the fact that God does not call perfect people to do his purposes. (In fact, there are no perfect people – the only perfect man who ever lived was Jesus Christ himself.) If I was faultless in my lifestyle or my service of God, then I could claim credit for what I do. But, because I am a faulty character (like old Peter) I know that any good thing I do must come from God. Wasn’t it Paul who complained about having a “thorn in the flesh”, but when he talked to the Lord about it Jesus said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”  

Grace is God’s doing. Grace does not overlook our deficiencies; grace produces God’s efficiency though us. By grace we are saved and by grace we serve. God-tracking is seeking to live by the grace of God, especially through our shortfalls. Grace does not condone sin. On the contrary, it reveals sin to us. Grace pardons our sin on our confession and repentance. And grace has a brother called, faith. We are saved by grace through faith and we serve as God-trackers by God’s grace though faith in his power to equip us for duty.

God had a purpose for Simon Peter and God has a purpose for you. You do not need to be perfect to follow God’s purposes; you only need to step out in faith, believing that, by grace, God is fulfilling his purposes through you, to his praise and glory. That’s living by grace.

God-tracking is faithfully tracking God’s purposes by the sufficiency of his grace.

Andrew van der Bijl heard the call of God to smuggle Bibles into the Soviet Union during the dark days of the Cold War. At this time, it was illegal to take Bibles into Russia but he sensed God wanted him to risk his life to deliver copies of God’s Word to the suffering church behind the Iron Curtain. Packing every nook and cranny of his small VW Beetle car with Bibles he set out on his dangerous journey. Approaching the border, he knew there was no way he would be able to smuggle this valuable cargo into Russia without God’s help. He knew God had called him to do this and had acknowledged him in every aspect of the trip. Now, at the border, all that remained was for him to have the faith to drive through without being arrested. “Lord,” prayed Brother Andrew, “You have made blind eyes see. Today I ask you to make seeing eyes blind.” A while later he drove through Russia, rejoicing. God had made a way where there was no way.

When the Israelites left Egypt they were pursued by Pharaoh’s army to the shores of the Red Sea. With the sea before them and an army at their rear they had no way of escape, until God instructed Moses to part the seas. What a miracle! God had made a way for them to cross on dry land while their enemy was destroyed behind them. God’s people were on their way to new things. God was making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

Are you facing an impossible situation today? Perhaps financial crises or a severe illness. It could be you’ve felt the call of God to move forward with a new adventurous plan but you’re left thinking, “No way! How am I ever going to make it?” Be encouraged. If you have clearly heard from the Lord and have acknowledge God in all your plans, then he will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

GOD-TRACKING IS GUARDING OUR TONGUES AGAINST A QUICK CRITICAL BARB

Hebrews 10:24
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works

American comedian, George Burns said, “Too bad the only people who know how to run this country are busy driving cabs and cutting hair.” We smile but it’s true! Criticism is a disease that has crept into every echelon of society. But it’s nothing new.

Paul the apostle was a man of integrity, called of God to preach the Good news to the Gentiles. He was a Jew – a “Hebrew of Hebrews” – and yet God gave Paul a message for the non-Jews of his time. This, however, raised many eyebrows within his own camp. As a result, Paul was criticised and condemned by his Christian brothers. I thank God for Paul’s resolve to not allow this criticism to affect his work. He continued to do what God had called him to do, believing that the Holy Spirit had called and equipped him to do it. God watched over his Word to Paul, who became one of the pillars of the Christian Faith. Eventually his critics had to admit that Paul was fulfilling God’s purposes with power and integrity.

In my few humble years of life as a Christian, active in my local church, it has never ceased to amaze me how loving, caring children of God can raise each other’s hopes and dreams to the ground through unmerited criticism. All too often jealous selfish ambition is disguised as well-meaning advice. (The Bible is clear about selfish ambition: where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.) But a heart intent on humbly and selflessly seeking God’s purposes in grace and meekness will bring words of peace, encouragement and gentle godly rebuke instead of criticisms. And such words can only emanate from prayer. As someone once said, “Don't put people down, unless it's on your prayer list.”

I used to be an extremely critical person. I’d criticise the performance of my co-workers, my pastor and, sadly, even my own family. One day my Christian boss called me into his office and came straight to the point, “Dudley, you need to stop being such a critical person!” I was stunned. I never realised I was critical. I asked God’s help to change my ways.

My encouragement to us today is, let’s seek to build each other up, stirring one another to love and good works. Let’s think twice before opening our mouths to offer criticism, especially of our leaders! Remember, a soft answer turns away wrath and soothes troubled waters.

God-tracking is guarding our tongues against a quick critical barb.

Dear God-tracker

GOD-TRACKING IS DEVELOPING GODLY CHARACTER THOUGH TRIALS

James 1:2-4
2 Count it all joy, my brothers,[b] when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Let’s face it, tracking God’s plans can often become confusing when we experience difficulty or loss in life. If I am acknowledging God in everything I do and sense his call on my life then surely things will always work out well for me? Surely I won’t suffer difficulties like the next guy? After all, I’m a King’s kid! Or will they?

Job was an average guy like you or me except he was a very holy man. You could say that Job was a God Tracker. He acknowledged the Lord in all he did and strove to live a good life. In fact, the Bible describes Job as a man who feared God and shunned evil. He was married with a many children and was very well off. Though he was a good man, it pleased God to set Job the trial of his life. We read in the Bible book of his name how God allowed Satan to inflict Job with all manner of loss and difficulty. He lost his children; he lost his wealth and almost lost his own life to a dreaded skin disorder. Never-the-less, we read that, through it all, Job never “cursed God”. In other words, he never questioned God’s judgement or God’s sovereignty in his life. At the end of the story God speaks to Job and reminds him, in no uncertain terms, that he is God and Job is not! God reveals his sovereign right over the life and purposes of man, and his right to produce endurance, faith and character through trails in the lives of those he calls. But with hope: at the end of the book of Job we read, “The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first.”

There is one difference between Job and you as a Christian, however. That difference is, Jesus! In Job we discover a man standing before God by his own righteousness. But as a Christian I stand before God by Christ’s righteousness, not my own. Because Christ had not yet come, Job was un-redeemed before God and a sinner in heart, like the rest of fallen mankind. Eventually Job admits, “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.” He then later adds, “Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” You see, Job was only good by his own standards but we, as redeemed by the blood of Jesus, are made good by Christ’s standards. The difference implies that Job was still under the curse of sin and death, while, in Christ, we are set free from the law of sin and death by the law of the Spirit of life.

As a God Tracker through Christ therefore, Job’s experience helps us to view our trials in a new light. God loved Job and God loves you. God restored Job after his trials and God will restore you after your trials, if you keep your eyes on Jesus. Through Christ, you can face every difficulty, every loss and every trial. Unlike Job, your victory is not found in your own credentials but in the credentials of Jesus Christ. Never-the-less, you can be sure you will still suffer the devil’s attacks through trials and tribulations. You may think this is unfair, the trials you suffer are not because God is testing your righteousness (as he did with Job) but because God is developing your character.

However, I realise that these trials are for my good. The develop the character and tenacity I need to face further trials in life. I stand before you, O God, not by my own credentials but by those of Jesus. You caused Jesus to endure the trial of the cross so I can be made righteous by your grace; not my good works. Therefore, I rest in your grace and power and not my own abilities, to get me through these problems. Thank you Lord for my deliverance. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS FINDING YOUR WAY BACK TO HIS ORIGINAL TRACK FOR YOU, BY HIS WORD AND SPIRIT.

Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.

I was taking a walk in a wood near my home the other day when I came across a concealed intersection in the path I was on. Turning left, I walked on for another few meters before realising that the path was becoming rather sparse. Soon, I was trudging through virgin forest and realised that I would become lost unless I returned to the path I was on. So, making a U-turn I made my way back to the path and began looking for the intersection to return to the main track taking me back to my parked car. But could I find that turn off? Up and down the path I plodded for what seemed like ages until I was exhausted – and a little panicky! Was it at that bush, or that tree, or that boulder where I turned? Eventually I spotted a vague clearing in the scrub that looked familiar. I took a bold step off the path I was on and was happy to discover the original track opening up in front of me once again. Weary but relieved I made my way back to my car.

Our walk of faith can be like a walk in the forest. We step out onto the track of life God has prepared for us with gusto. Soon, however, we come to a crossroads: false theological ideas or simply the lure of the world. Thus far, our walk has been based on the simple literal reading of God’s Word and fellowship with the Holy Spirit in prayer, but now we are confronted by new ideas that draw us away from the pure literal Word of God. Or perhaps a disappointment at church has occurred that has sadly seduced us out of fellowship. Soon we will find that we have taken a left or right turn at the crossroads, when all the Lord wants us to do is keep walking straight on, building life by his Word and his Spirit.

If you find you’ve taken aside track into a theological conundrum or grown cold in your faith and feel you’re getting lost, then I suggest you make a hasty U-turn and find your way back to that intersection where you left the road you were on. You will need to return to a point in your Christian walk where you remember you were walking by faith and hearing God’s voice. Delete your Internet history. Put down the smart phone and return to true and exact Word of God. It’ll be the smartest thing you’ll ever do! It may take time to find that track back to God’s pure purposes but be prayerfully patient and doggedly determined, and you will find it.

God-tracking is finding your way back to his original track for you, by his Word and Spirit.

I turn back now, O Lord, in prayer, to the track of life you have designed for me. I’m sorry for not attending church. I’m sorry for allowing false and confusing ideas into my head. I return to the point I left the road and ask that you will restore me once again to the glorious purpose you have planned for my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS EXERCISING THE POWER OF THE MYSTERY WE CALL, PRAYER

…praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints…

Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke tells the story of how, shortly after he moved to Africa the, so called, missionary boneyard almost claimed him. He’d begun to work among the villages of the mountainous kingdom of Lesotho. One very hot day, while travelling from village to village sharing the gospel, he ran out of water. Nearing dehydration, he came upon a well. He was fully aware of the golden rule to boil untreated water before drinking it, but being desperate he drank water straight from the well. That night he became gravely ill. After three days of semi-conscious delirium he had a vision of a heavy dark blanket being lowered over him. He knew he was dying. The devil had previously tried to thwart God’s plan to use Reinhard, while escaping Germany after World War II as a child. But God’s hand was on this young man.

“Then somehow I could see through the blanket,” he recalls. “On the other side I saw the face of Jesus and a wonderful peace flooded my heart.” In the next moment he heard the voice of Sister Kohler, a dear old prayer warrior from his old church back home in Germany, calling out to God to spare his life. At that moment the fever broke and he began to regain his strength.

When he’d recovered from his ordeal, Reinhard Bonnke wrote a letter to his father asking if he would enquire of Sister Kohler what had happened that day. It turned out that she was awakened in the early hours of the morning by the Holy Spirit’s voice saying, “Pray for Reinhard. He is seriously ill and dying in Africa.” Obediently she rose and prayed. She prayed though most of the day until she felt a release. It was at that very moment that Reinhard had seen the vision from the Lord and began to recover.

Reinhard Bonnke has gone on to become one of the most prolific evangelists of our time. Literally millions of people have come to salvation through his ministry. Reinhard Bonnke is well respected, worldwide, as a great man of God, operating in the fullness of the power of the Holy Spirit. However, if it weren’t for the obedient intercession of a faithful dear soul back home in a small town in northern Germany, whom no one had ever heard of, this man of faith would have died at an early age, out in the bush of Africa.

We have a deep responsibility to cover one another in prayer. Don’t think, because you’re not actively in the mission field, you have no mission. I believe we’re all called to all the world. So your mission is to PRAY! Prayer is a mystery – I’ll never grasp how my humble words stir the heart of Almighty, but they do. Prayer is powerful. Intercessor prayer is standing before God on behalf of someone else. When the Holy Spirit lays a person’s name on your heart, PRAY! As Charles Brent said, “Intercessory prayer might be defined as loving our neighbour on our knees.” Make it your mission to pray for men and women on the front lines of Christian ministry. Make it your mission to pray for your parents, politicians and pastors. Make it your mission to pray for family, friends and neighbours. The prayer of a righteous person avails much. And in Christ you have been made righteous before God. So PRAY!

“Dear Father God, I come before you now on behalf of my loved ones. Bless them, protect them, guide them and meet their needs. I pray for those who have yet to ask Jesus into their lives, that they will hear the gospel and come under your conviction to receive Jesus as Lord. I intercede for those who cannot, or choose not, to pray for themselves. I pray for my church leaders, that you will guard their hearts, minds and flesh. Keep them true to your calling that they will walk in integrity. I pray for the government of my land, O Lord. Lead their discussions and debates; guide their decisions and give them wisdom beyond their natural means. I pray for the Body of Christ, worldwide. Dear Lord move in might and power, your will to perform. Raise up a standard of love, grace, humility and power within the Church. May we be one in Spirit and in Word. Dear Father God, I pray in the name above all names, even Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Amen.”
