“He who is with you is greater than anything you could ever fear in this life or beyond. He who has a plan for your life is watching over his word to perform it.”

Psalm 56:3
But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.

One summer night during a severe thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small son into bed. She was about to turn the light off when he asked in a trembling voice, "Mommy, will you please sleep in my room with me all night?" Smiling, the mother gave him a warm hug and said, "I can't dear. I have to sleep in Daddy's room." After a long silence, a shaky little voice said, "The big sissy!"

Fears and phobias are some of the most common roots of mental illness. Fears can be exceedingly debilitating. I know of a woman so fearful of confined spaces that she refuses to sleep with her windows closed, even at the height of winter. French chemist and microbiologist, founder of the antibiotic and the process of pasteurization, Louis Pasteur is said to have had such an irrational fear of dirt and infection he refused to shake hands.

In those moments, when fear overpowers you, you have a choice to make. You can either surrender to fear and hide away from society, frantically avoiding every nuance of the object or condition that scares you, or you can put your trust in your Lord. Our God is high and exalted. He is the Creator of the universe. The Lord God is all-knowing, all-powerful and ever-present. Nothing is hidden from his sight. What is the immeasurable greatness of his power towards us who believe, according to the working of his great might? Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. He is with us 24/7. He knows your very thoughts before you even know them yourself. He is Paraklete – the One alongside you, always.

Fear does not need to control your life. He who is with you is greater than anything you could ever fear in this life or beyond. He who has a plan for your life is watching over his word to you to perform it. Stand strong in your Lord and in the strength of his might, putting on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against all fears and phobias. So, never fear!

God-tracking is trusting in God when you are afraid

I choose to put on the whole armour of God – taking up the shield of faith – and stand against these unreasonable fears in my life.

“Dear God, Almighty, I admit to my fears. I confess that I have phobias and fears that debilitate my life. Forgive me for any lack of faith; faith chases away all fear. I place my faith in your omnipresence, omnipotence and omniscience now, in Jesus’ name. I choose to put on the whole armour of God – taking up the shield of faith – and stand against these unreasonable fears in my life. You are my Lord and Lord of all. When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. Amen.”

“Instantly, I knew that it was I who was pointing the finger! I was guilty of holding an account of wrong. Without delay, I dug into my shirt pocket and retrieved my little “just-in-case-I-need-it” notepad and ripped it apart.”

Isaiah 58:9
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

I know we could all share bad-boss stories and how we’ve been hard done by, by our employers. But I once worked for a man who would play his subordinates up against each other attempting to create sufficient discord to place him in a better position of control. It got so bad that I began to keep a record of our conversations and of his offences against me in a notepad – just in case I needed it someday, you understand.

These confrontations and offences continued at an alarming rate until a breaking point was reached when all was revealed. However, during the months leading up to this moment, I had a dream. In the dream, I saw myself standing with my chest against an iron barrier like the type found at a border crossing. Behind me, the scene was desolate and barren but on the other side of the barrier fresh green meadows stretched out as far as the eye could see. I remember desperately trying to get at those green fields but the barrier prevented my moving forward.

I was troubled by this dream for some days. Then one morning, at work, I was preparing content for my Christian radio show. I was feeling particularly uninspired at that moment and prayed, “Lord, I need your help.” I had the Bible open and as I looked down into the pages of Isaiah I read, “Then you will call, and the LORD will answer If you do away with the pointing finger and malicious talk.” Instantly, I knew that it was I who was pointing the finger! I was guilty of holding an account of wrong. Without delay, I dug into my shirt pocket and retrieved my little “just-in-case-I-need-it” notepad and ripped it apart. As the pieces of that little book fell into my wastepaper bin, in my mind’s eye, I saw the barrier in my dream lift like a weight off my shoulders. I was free from condemnations and free from offence; free to walk out into the lush pastures of God’s purposes.

God-tracking is keeping no record of wrongs.

Lord, I want to have the same attitude as Christ; he forgave those who had crucified him

“O Lord, my God, I realise now that I have been the one in the wrong. I’m sorry for holding this grudge for so long. I repent of unforgiveness and ask that you will forgive me of all bitterness, pride and self-seeking. I choose to let my offences go. I pray for those who have offended me. Help them to see their errors and help me to forgive and love them. Thank you for the luscious green pastures ahead of me now as I walk out in the freedom of your grace. Lord, I want to have the same attitude as Christ; he forgave those who had crucified him. Amen.”

“Encouragement is a vital ingredient in our walk with Jesus. Sometimes life becomes so bogged down with workload or difficulties that we take our eyes off the source of our reason for living.”

Colossians 2:2
that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ,

Marion Gilbert tells a funny little story. He says, “One morning I opened the door to get the newspaper and was surprised to see a strange little dog with our paper in his mouth. Delighted with this unexpected delivery service, I fed him some treats. The following morning, I was horrified to see the same dog sitting in front of our door, wagging his tail, surrounded by eight newspapers. I spent the rest of that morning returning the papers to their owners.” Indeed, a little encouragement goes a long way.

Reading through the book of Acts in the Bible we will notice many occasions where people are encouraged in their faith. Often, we read of how the apostle Paul revisited the churches he planted to encourage them. One of Paul’s early travel companions was a man called Joseph. He was a wealthy landowner who sold a field and brought the money to the early Church leaders, to be shared among the needy. Joseph was such an encourager that they changed his name to Barnabas, which means son of encouragement.

Encouragement is a vital ingredient in our walk with Jesus. Sometimes life becomes so bogged down with workload or difficulties that we take our eyes off the source of our reason for living. Sometimes loss or need so cloud our vision that we lose track of God’s purposes and forget that he is with us even in the fire. And sometimes we become so distracted by the lure of the world that we stumble along our God track.

So, be encouraged today to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. And be encouraged to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

“So, even if the battle continues to rage beyond your walls, be strong in the Lord and the strength of his might for the name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it, and they are saved.”

Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower,
The righteous run into it,
And they are saved.”

I listened fondly to the old chorus sung by a good friend on Facebook Live. Dating myself
slightly, this song takes me back to the days of my church youth. We loved bouncing up and down while we sang it with hand actions to the chorus.

Traditionally, a strong tower is a fortified tower usually built within the walls of a castle. The king would retreat to this tower, within the bounds of the castle, when the castle came under siege from his enemy. Here he would be safe. However, simply because the king was safe in his tower it did not mean the battle was over. For all intents and purposes, the battle raged on outside the bounds of his tower. The castle was still under siege and even if the castle wall were breached the king would be safe.

God’s word to you today is, the name of your Lord is your fortified tower, secure and impenetrable. When you come under siege from your enemy, Satan, retreat to your strong tower and wrap yourself securely in the name of Jesus. That is, when troubles come in the form of heartache, illness, depression or financial crisis, call on the name of Jesus Christ. You can rest securely in his name while his hosts fight your battle. The battle may continue to rage outside your camp – sickness and difficulty may persist – but you will be secure in the name of Jesus, your strong tower.

Your Warrior is your mighty champion. Nothing will separate you from his love. If he is for you, who can be against you? No weapon formed against you will prevail. In Christ, you are more than a conqueror because he defeated Satan at Calvary. His name is your fortified stronghold. At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. So, even if the battle continues to rage beyond your walls, be strong in the Lord and the strength of his might for the name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it, and they are saved.

I believe that Satan has no weapon greater than the name of Jesus

“Dear God, I run into my strong tower today! I call on the name of Jesus Christ! Lord, hear my prayers and meet my needs. Though the battle I’m in seems to prevail, I rest secure in your name, Jesus. Your name is my strong tower. When my life comes under siege I run into your name and I know I am safe, even as the siege continues. Jesus, you are my mighty champion, you are my Victor. I believe that Satan has no weapon greater than the name of Jesus. At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow! Therefore, I declare the name of Jesus Christ over every circumstance of my life. Amen.”

THE MEEKNESS DILEMMA

“Like a powerful stallion tamed by his handler for great feats of purpose, may you and I be tamed by the hand of God’s sufficient grace and remain true to the plans he has for our lives.”

Psalm 37:11
But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.

Jesus stood to his feet on the hillside that provided one of the natural amphitheatres on the banks of Lake Tiberias. He was surrounded by a great crowd. He began his famous discourse known as the Beatitudes. A few minutes into his sermon he said, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” The Greek word for meek in Matthew 5:5 is praus. This word can also be used to describe an animal that has been domesticated; an animal that has learned to accept control, such as the taming of a wild stallion.

A horse is a mighty creature. With one kick it could kill a man. It has the power to run fast, draw a mighty load or lead an army into battle. Yet, when a stallion is tamed and trained it becomes gentle and submissive. Thus, the meaning of meekness.

Saul had a great future. He was a Pharisee, a student of the great rabbi, Gamaliel. He was a Hebrew of Hebrews. As to the law, a Pharisee, as to zeal, a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness, blameless. When he converted to Christianity, he became the great apostle, Paul. Paul describes how he was once caught up to the third heaven – into paradise – and heard things that cannot be told. He became a great leader, a church planter and a scribe of scripture. Yet Paul said, “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” He explains how Jesus told him that God’s grace was sufficient for him and he said, “For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Paul was a mighty stallion tamed by the meekness of submission to Christ.

The concept of meekness is something that Christians have always battled to decipher. But meekness is nothing more than humble dependence on the grace of God. Grace is God’s doing. Grace empowers you to do God’s bidding. God’s grace is sufficient to turn your weakness into meekness, for his glory. Like a powerful stallion tamed by his handler for great feats of purpose, may you and I be tamed by the hand of God’s sufficient grace and remain true to the plans he has for our lives. And meekness has great reward: “The meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.”

Help me to submit to your mighty hand to control and guide my life that I may be humbly useful and productive for your kingdom

“O Lord, I have always battled to be meek. I realise now that meekness is not weakness. A mighty stallion is not a weak animal but, when he is tamed, he becomes submissive and meek. Help me to let go of my wild side. I step back from my pride. I turn away from arrogance. Help me to submit to your mighty hand to control and guide my life that I may be humbly useful and productive for your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”

“If you know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and have committed your life to him then you are in Christ. What an auspicious position of vantage. Therefore, may we set out hearts on things above. All we are and all we do is all about Jesus!”

Colossians 3:17
A
nd whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

“It’s all about Jesus.” I sensed the words of the Holy Spirit burn in my heart as I gazed out the window while in prayer. I’d sat down on the floor in my room next to the window, as I usually do when I have my time of devotions in the morning. I was praying about my work. I currently have several irons in the fire and often become so consumed with my work that I forget why I do what I do.

One of my favourite chapters in the Bible is Colossians chapter 3. The chapter begins with the words, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God,” (NIV). Further on we read that whatever we do in life as Christian believers, we are to do in the name of Jesus. That is, every aspect of our life and work (whatever that work might be) needs to be done with one focus: Christ.

The words “in Christ” appear 97 times in the English Standard Version of the Bible. You are a new creation in Christ. You have all your needs met in Christ. You enjoy every spiritual blessing in Christ. And you are raised up and seated in heavenly places in Christ. If you know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and have committed your life to him then you are in Christ. What an auspicious position of vantage. Therefore, may we set out hearts on things above. All we are and all we do is all about Jesus!

“Moses discovered, when he led the Israelites to the shores of the Promised Land, that the Lord God was the One alongside him all the way, helping him do what he could not do by his own ability. So is the Lord your Helper, too.”

Psalm 54:4
Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life

Moses was already an old man when he experienced the Lord’s call to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian captivity. He was watching over his father-in-law’s sheep one day when the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a burning bush. “I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people out of Egypt,” he said. Moses was flabbergasted at the call of God for such an auspicious task. He resisted the call of God by saying, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue. Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.” In reply, God said, “I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Moses obeyed the call of God and, with God’s help, went on to become one of the greatest leaders and prophets Israel was to ever know.

Do you sense the call of God on your life but don’t feel qualified to take it on? Are you facing a new task at work or a new role in a new job but feel intimidated by the learning curve? Perhaps you are working hard at school, college or university but are battling to take it all in. Whatever you may be facing today; whatever is intimidating you; whatever it is you feel unqualified to do, as Moses did, rest assured in the knowledge that the Lord your God is your helper. He who is omniscient and omnipotent will be your strength and your help in your time of need.

Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit after his return to the Father. He said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” If you know Jesus as Lord and Saviour, the Holy Spirit is in you and with you in every scope of life. The Greek word used to describe him in the New Testament is paraclete, which means advocate or counsellor, the one alongside. Moses discovered, when he led the Israelites to the shores of the Promised Land, that the Lord God was the One alongside him all the way, helping him do what he could not do by his own ability. So is the Lord your Helper, too.
