Psalm 90:17a
Let the favour of the Lord our God be
upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work
of our hands!

Glen, a pastor of a small
community church, tells the story of how he was called to the ministry. He says
that he felt God's call to the ministry while working as a successful
businessman. He began taking Bible courses at night and eventually obtained his
degree. Before graduation, he informed his boss that he'd soon be leaving to
work as a pastor in a rural church. Neither the owner of the company or the
boss believed him, and they neglected to obtain a replacement for Glen.
Eventually, Glen told the boss that he really was leaving, and they needed to
find a replacement as soon as possible. The owner of the company still doubting
Glen's sincerity, instructed Glen's boss, "Offer him a $500.00 raise, and
if he takes it, fire him on the spot!"
Motivation is a fleeting
emotion. So many folks are motivated by money or success or the esteem of
others, while others are motivated by responsivity or duty. And there are those
people who are secure in their own self-esteem and press into great heights
under self-motivation until their self-motivation is undermined by criticisms.
When motivations like these begin to fade the individual becomes deflated and
often descends into depression.
I believe these types of
motivation are transient. In the Bible, we find many characters who were
seemingly self-motivated, like Apostle Paul. Paul was a great miracle-working
preacher who planted many churches and, under the anointing of the Holy Spirit,
penned several books of the Bible. And yet, Paul faced intense bouts of
demotivation. One time he said, “A thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger
of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.” I could imagine
this “thorn” might have been criticism and great opposition, attempting to
demotivate him and drag him away from God’s purposes. But Paul goes on to say
that Jesus told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made
perfect in weakness.”
Grace is God’s doing.
Grace saves us from sin and grace empowers us to serve. Grace is God working in
you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Feeling demotivated today?
Let the favour (grace) of the Lord your God be upon you and establish the work
of your hands upon you; yes, establish the work of your hands!

I surrender the work of
my hands to you
“Dear
Lord, I have tried very hard to maintain my motivation but I’m feeling very unmotivated
today. I am weary. In my attempt for success, please forgive me if I have done anything
wrong and reveal any wrongdoing to me. I surrender the work of my hands to you,
in Jesus’ name. I seek your power and grace to motivate me to carry on. Dear
Lord, my your favour – your grace – establish the work of my hands. Amen.”
